Course overview

Occupational hygiene decisions are only as reliable as the exposure information behind them. Safety professionals, HSE advisers and operational managers are often asked to determine whether workers are exposed to hazardous substances, noise, heat, dusts, vapours or other agents at levels requiring action. This requires more than arranging air monitoring: practitioners must identify exposure groups, select defensible sampling methods, interpret results against occupational exposure limits, and communicate findings that lead to proportionate controls.

This five-day Occupational Hygiene Exposure Assessment Fundamentals Training Course builds the practical assessment capability needed to plan, conduct and report workplace exposure assessments. Participants learn the anticipate-recognise-evaluate-control approach; hazardous-agent and task profiling; similar exposure group (SEG) development; personal and area sampling strategies; calibration and chain-of-custody requirements; time-weighted average and short-term exposure calculations; and basic statistical interpretation of monitoring data. The course applies EN 689 principles, NIOSH methods and exposure-limit comparison techniques to realistic workplace scenarios.

Instructor-led technical sessions are reinforced through sampling-plan workshops, calculation exercises, case-based interpretation of laboratory results and peer review of assessment decisions. Participants work with exposure registers, task observations, sampling records and reporting templates rather than abstract examples. By the end of the week, each participant produces a workplace-ready exposure assessment pack containing a hazard profile, SEG rationale, monitoring plan, results interpretation, control recommendations and review schedule that can be adapted for use in their own organisation.

The course is designed for professionals who already work with workplace hazards or health and safety management systems and now need a structured method for assessing employee exposure. Requirements and prerequisites

Participants should have practical familiarity with workplace risk assessment, common control measures and the basic language of health and safety management, such as hazards, likelihood, controls and occupational exposure limits. Experience of a manufacturing, construction, laboratory, maintenance, healthcare or process environment is useful because exercises use real task-based scenarios. Participants should be comfortable reading simple tables and performing basic arithmetic, including averages and unit conversions. No previous occupational hygiene qualification, laboratory experience, statistical software or air-sampling equipment ownership is required. Complete beginners should expect a technically focused foundation rather than an advanced analytical chemistry or occupational hygiene certification course.

Training methodology

The course combines instructor-led explanation with worked occupational hygiene cases drawn from maintenance, manufacturing, laboratory and process settings. Participants examine task descriptions, safety data sheets, process information and mock monitoring results to build exposure profiles and similar exposure groups. Hands-on sessions cover sampling-plan design, time-weighted average calculations, calibration-record checks and interpretation of laboratory reports. Small groups challenge each other's sampling rationale and control recommendations against EN 689 principles. The final day includes individual application planning, enabling each participant to translate the course templates into a priority assessment for their own workplace.

Day 2: Exposure profiling and sampling strategy

Day 4: Exposure data interpretation and decisions
