Course overview

Human resources managers sit at the point where workforce policy, employee relations, absence management, recruitment, training and organisational change meet occupational safety. Decisions about job design, return-to-work plans, contractor onboarding, disciplinary action, workplace adjustments and reporting channels can either prevent harm or expose the organisation to claims, enforcement action and damaged trust. This course equips HR professionals to take an informed, active role in an occupational health and safety management system without attempting to replace specialist safety practitioners.

Participants examine how ISO 45001 principles translate into HR processes: competence management, consultation, psychosocial risk control, incident reporting, occupational health records, emergency roles and assurance. They learn to build a legal and policy compliance register, identify HR-controlled risks, interpret leading and lagging safety indicators, support fair incident investigations, and connect absence, turnover and grievance data to possible safety concerns. Particular attention is given to stress, fatigue, bullying, harassment, violence at work, substance misuse and reasonable workplace adjustments.

Instructor-led sessions are paired with practical workshops using realistic workforce scenarios, including a serious incident, a stress-related absence trend and a contentious return-to-work case. Participants work with risk-register templates, consultation plans, training matrices, investigation evidence logs and Excel-based safety dashboards. By the end of the week, each participant produces an HR Occupational Safety Action Plan that identifies priority gaps, ownership, controls, measures and a 90-day implementation sequence suitable for discussion with HR leadership and the safety function.

The course is designed for experienced HR professionals and people managers who already influence workforce policy or employee lifecycle processes and need to make those decisions defensible, consistent and aligned with occupational health and safety duties.

Course objectives

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Map HR-owned processes to ISO 45001 occupational health and safety management system requirements
  • Build a workforce safety compliance register covering policies, records, consultation and competence obligations
  • Assess psychosocial hazards using a risk matrix, worker data and control hierarchy principles
  • Design a role-based safety competence matrix and evidence-based training record process
  • Investigate employee-related incidents using timelines, witness evidence and root-cause analysis
  • Create a return-to-work and reasonable-adjustment plan that manages health, safety and confidentiality risks
  • Analyse absence, turnover, grievance and incident data in an Excel safety dashboard
  • Produce a 90-day HR Occupational Safety Action Plan with owners, measures and review dates

Who should attend

  • Human Resources Managers — who own workforce policies, employee relations and people-risk decisions
  • HR Business Partners — who advise operational leaders on organisational change, absence and workforce controls
  • Employee Relations Managers — who handle grievances, discipline, bullying allegations and workplace conflict
  • People and Culture Managers — who need to embed safety responsibilities in employee lifecycle processes
  • Learning and Development Managers — who must establish auditable safety competence and training records
  • Occupational Health Coordinators — who work with HR on fitness-for-work, adjustments and return-to-work cases

Requirements and prerequisites

Participants should have practical experience in HR, employee relations, occupational health administration or people management, and be comfortable reading workplace policies and handling confidential employee information. Familiarity with basic risk assessment terms such as hazard, likelihood, consequence and control is helpful, as is the ability to work with simple Microsoft Excel tables and charts. Participants should bring examples of their organisation’s absence, induction or training processes where permitted. Formal safety qualifications, audit certification, legal training and prior knowledge of ISO 45001 are not required; the course explains these frameworks in an HR decision-making context.

Training methodology

The programme combines focused instructor-led teaching with HR-centred safety cases, facilitated policy reviews and hands-on template work. Participants assess a psychosocial risk scenario, trace an incident through an investigation timeline, build a competence matrix, and analyse anonymised absence and incident data in Excel. Small groups challenge each other’s control measures against the hierarchy of controls and ISO 45001 expectations. Daily debriefs connect the exercises to participants’ own HR processes, culminating in an individual 90-day implementation plan reviewed by the instructor.

Course outline

Frequently asked questions

No formal safety qualification is required. The course assumes experience with HR processes and introduces ISO 45001, risk assessment and investigation methods at the depth needed to make sound HR decisions.

A laptop is strongly recommended for the Excel dashboard and action-planning workshops. Microsoft Excel is used for practical exercises; course templates and case data are provided.

Yes. It is specifically designed for HR managers, business partners, employee relations leaders and learning professionals whose work affects occupational safety but who do not lead technical safety operations.

This course focuses on the HR controls that make safety systems work: competence, consultation, psychosocial risk, employee relations, records and return-to-work. It does not train participants to conduct technical hazard inspections or become a certified management-system auditor.

Participants can review induction records, training matrices, absence trends, worker consultation routes and return-to-work procedures immediately after the course. The 90-day action plan provides prioritised actions, owners and measures for a structured implementation discussion.

You will leave with an HR Occupational Safety Action Plan, a competence matrix model, psychosocial risk assessment structure, incident evidence-log template and Excel dashboard approach. These materials can be adapted to your organisation’s policies, legal jurisdiction and workforce profile.
