Course overview

Business analysts are often accountable for turning approved requirements into work that delivery teams can estimate, build, test and release. Yet many analysts receive limited project-delivery training and must manage changing scope, unclear decisions, missed dependencies and stakeholder expectations while maintaining the integrity of the business case. This course equips analysts to work confidently at the point where analysis meets project execution.

Participants learn how to structure requirements for delivery, plan analysis and validation work, support estimation, manage scope through change control, and track progress against agreed baselines. The course covers stakeholder and governance planning, work breakdown structures, RAID logs, traceability matrices, user-story backlogs, acceptance criteria, dependency mapping, milestone planning and status reporting. Participants also practise facilitating delivery-focused workshops and escalating issues with evidence rather than opinion.

Teaching is built around a realistic business-change case study in which participants act as the lead business analyst on a cross-functional project. Instructor-led demonstrations are followed by workshops using Jira, Microsoft Project and Excel-based delivery controls. Each participant produces a practical Business Analyst Project Delivery Pack containing a stakeholder map, requirements baseline, delivery plan, RAID log, change-control workflow, traceability matrix and project status dashboard that can be adapted for use at work.

Requirements and prerequisites

Participants should understand the basic purpose of business requirements, stakeholders and project phases, and should have experience working on, or supporting, a business change, software or process-improvement initiative. Familiarity with documents such as business requirements, user stories, process maps or meeting actions is helpful. Basic spreadsheet confidence is assumed, including entering data, sorting and filtering in Excel. No formal project management qualification, Jira certification, Microsoft Project expertise, coding knowledge or prior use of a PMO methodology is required. Complete beginners should expect a practical introduction to delivery terminology before applying it in case exercises.

Training methodology

The course combines focused instructor-led input with delivery artefacts built throughout a single project case study. Participants examine an ambiguous change request, define its requirements baseline, plan analysis and delivery work, map dependencies, assess scope changes and report project health. Short demonstrations show how Jira, Microsoft Project and Excel can support each control. Small-group workshops simulate stakeholder meetings, change-control reviews and status-reporting discussions. On day five, participants consolidate their outputs into a Business Analyst Project Delivery Pack and create an application plan for a current or upcoming assignment.
