Course overview

Executive sponsors are accountable for benefits, strategic alignment, investment decisions and escalation outcomes, yet many are drawn into projects only when a milestone slips, a steering committee deadlocks or a business case needs reapproval. This course equips sponsors to govern without becoming the project manager. Participants learn how to set decision rights, challenge assumptions, interpret delivery evidence and intervene at the points where executive action changes the outcome.

Across five days, participants work through the sponsor’s governance responsibilities from portfolio selection to project closure. They learn to establish a project charter and governance model; approve business cases using financial, strategic and risk criteria; run effective steering committees; use RAID logs, milestone forecasts, earned value indicators and benefits dashboards; and make evidence-based decisions on scope, funding, resourcing and escalation. The course also addresses sponsor–project manager boundaries, assurance reviews, vendor governance and recovery decisions for troubled initiatives.

Instructor-led briefings are paired with executive-level case simulations, governance document reviews and facilitated decision workshops. Participants practise responding to incomplete status reports, conflicting stakeholder demands and deteriorating benefit forecasts. They leave with a tailored Sponsor Governance Playbook containing a governance calendar, steering committee agenda, decision-rights matrix, escalation thresholds, project health dashboard specification and 90-day application plan for their own organisation.

The course is designed for experienced leaders who sponsor, approve, oversee or assure significant change initiatives, capital projects, digital programmes or transformation portfolios. It is equally valuable for senior professionals preparing to take on formal sponsorship responsibilities.

Course objectives

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Establish a project governance model with defined sponsor, steering committee and project manager accountabilities
  • Evaluate business cases using strategic alignment, financial return, risk exposure and benefits-realisation criteria
  • Create a decision-rights matrix that distinguishes approval, consultation, escalation and delivery authority
  • Run a steering committee using a decision-focused agenda, action log and evidence pack
  • Interpret milestone trends, RAID logs, earned value indicators and forecast variance reports
  • Set proportionate escalation thresholds for scope, cost, schedule, risk and benefits deviations
  • Conduct a project assurance review that tests delivery confidence, control effectiveness and benefit viability
  • Produce a Sponsor Governance Playbook for applying governance controls to a live initiative

Benefits of attending

Who should attend

  • Executive Sponsors — who are accountable for investment outcomes and must make timely governance decisions
  • Business Unit Directors — who approve strategic initiatives and allocate organisational resources
  • Programme Sponsors — who oversee interdependent projects, benefits and cross-functional risks
  • Portfolio Board Members — who prioritise investments and require comparable evidence across initiatives
  • Transformation Leaders — who lead enterprise change and need disciplined escalation and assurance mechanisms
  • Senior Project and Programme Managers — who need to work effectively with sponsors and prepare decision-ready governance information

Requirements and prerequisites

Participants should have experience leading a business function, sponsoring change, serving on a steering committee, or managing major projects or programmes. They should be familiar with basic project concepts such as scope, milestones, budget, risks, stakeholders, business cases and project status reporting. Prior exposure to a project dashboard, RAID log or governance meeting is useful, but participants do not need to be expert users of any project management software. No formal project management certification, earned value calculation experience, financial modelling qualification or prior use of Jira, Microsoft Project or Power BI is required.

Training methodology

The course combines instructor-led sponsor briefings with structured analysis of project evidence packs, including business cases, dashboards, RAID logs and steering committee papers. Participants work in small executive groups to govern a simulated transformation programme, making approval, escalation and recovery decisions as new information emerges. Facilitated debriefs compare decision rationale against governance principles and organisational risk appetite. Each participant then adapts the templates to a current initiative and completes a 90-day sponsor action plan with peer and instructor feedback.

Frequently asked questions

You should understand the basic language of projects, including scope, milestones, budget, risks, stakeholders and business cases. Experience as a senior leader, steering committee member, sponsor, programme manager or project manager is appropriate; no formal certification is required.

A laptop is recommended for adapting the governance templates and completing your Sponsor Governance Playbook. The course uses examples from Microsoft Project, Jira and Power BI, but no software licence or advanced system skills are required.

No. It also suits directors, portfolio board members, transformation leaders and senior project professionals who influence investment and governance decisions. The methods are especially useful for people about to assume sponsorship of a strategic initiative.

Project management courses focus on planning and controlling delivery work; this course focuses on executive oversight, investment decisions, assurance and escalation. Participants learn what evidence to demand and what decisions to make, rather than how to build detailed schedules themselves.

You can use the decision-rights matrix, steering committee agenda, escalation thresholds and dashboard specification in your next governance meeting. The final 90-day plan identifies the controls, stakeholders and live decisions to address in your own environment.

You leave with a completed Sponsor Governance Playbook tailored to a live or representative initiative. It includes governance cadence, role definitions, decision rights, stage-gate criteria, escalation rules, dashboard requirements and an implementation plan.
