Course overview
Accurate bookkeeping in Sage 50 depends on more than entering invoices. Finance staff must set up customers, suppliers, nominal codes and VAT settings correctly; maintain a clean audit trail; reconcile control accounts; and produce reports that managers and HMRC can rely on. Errors in tax codes, posting dates, bank reconciliations or VAT treatment can create misstatements, delayed month-end close and avoidable VAT return corrections. This five-day course addresses the practical controls needed to operate Sage 50 Accounts confidently from daily transaction processing through to VAT submission preparation.
Participants work through the Sage 50 Accounts workflow for company setup, chart of accounts structure, sales and purchase ledgers, cashbook transactions, journals, credit notes, stock records and management reporting. They learn how to select and review VAT codes, apply standard-rated, zero-rated, exempt and outside-scope treatment, correct posting errors without damaging the audit trail, reconcile bank and control accounts, and prepare VAT return figures under Making Tax Digital for VAT. The course also develops practical spreadsheet export and report-review skills for investigating exceptions and explaining balances.
Delivery combines instructor demonstrations with guided work in Sage 50 Accounts and realistic finance scenarios. Each participant processes a set of source documents for a trading business, resolves VAT and ledger exceptions, completes reconciliations, and produces a month-end reporting pack. They leave with a structured Sage 50 processing checklist, VAT review checklist, reconciled practice-company records and an action plan for applying the controls within their own finance function.
The programme suits accounts personnel building dependable operational capability, as well as experienced users who need a more disciplined approach to VAT, reconciliations and reporting. It is equally valuable to managers seeking consistent transaction processing and stronger evidence behind financial results.

Requirements and prerequisites
This is a foundation-to-intermediate course and is suitable for participants new to Sage 50 Accounts. Attendees should be comfortable using a Windows computer, entering data accurately, navigating files and working with basic spreadsheets. Familiarity with everyday bookkeeping terms such as invoice, credit note, debit, credit, bank reconciliation, VAT and trial balance is helpful, but not essential; these concepts are revisited in the Sage 50 context. No previous Sage 50 experience, accounting qualification or advanced Excel knowledge is required. Complete beginners should expect structured practice with transaction documents before progressing to reconciliations and VAT reporting.
Training methodology
The course is delivered over five instructor-led days in the classroom or live online, using a Sage 50 practice company and realistic source documents. Short demonstrations are followed by individual guided transactions, including invoice entry, payment allocation, VAT coding, journal posting and reconciliation. Participants compare decisions in small case discussions, investigate deliberately introduced ledger and VAT errors, and use Sage 50 reports to support conclusions. The final day combines a month-end simulation with application planning, enabling each participant to identify procedures, reports and checks to implement in their own role.
