Course overview
Salesforce Marketing Cloud Journey Builder is often underused as a linear email scheduler when it should coordinate responsive, data-driven customer experiences across email, SMS, mobile and advertising channels. Marketing teams need to turn lifecycle strategy into journeys that react to customer behaviour, consent status, purchases, service events and changing profile data. This requires more than knowing how to add activities to a canvas: practitioners must design entry criteria, manage contact data, control frequency, test decision logic and measure whether each journey produces commercial results without creating duplicate, irrelevant or non-compliant communications.
This five-day course teaches participants how to plan, build, test and optimise customer journeys in Salesforce Marketing Cloud Engagement. Participants work with Journey Builder, Contact Builder, Email Studio and Automation Studio to create data extensions, define contact relationships, configure entry sources, apply decision splits and engagement splits, use wait activities and goal criteria, and connect journeys to automated data processes. The course also covers consent-aware segmentation, re-entry settings, suppression strategy, version control, journey testing, troubleshooting and performance analysis using journey and email reporting.
Delivery combines instructor-led demonstrations with structured build exercises in a Salesforce Marketing Cloud training environment. Participants develop a documented lifecycle journey for a realistic business case, such as onboarding, lead nurture, renewal or abandoned basket recovery. Their final deliverable is a journey blueprint containing audience rules, data model assumptions, entry and exit criteria, activity logic, test cases, governance controls and measurement plan that can be adapted for implementation in their own organisation.
The course is suited to marketers and CRM professionals who need practical ownership of Journey Builder, as well as managers responsible for improving the reliability, relevance and measurable impact of automated customer communications.
Course objectives
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Design a Journey Builder lifecycle map with defined entry events, audiences, exit conditions and success measures
- Configure Contact Builder data extensions, attribute groups and contact relationships for journey segmentation
- Build multi-step journeys using entry sources, waits, email activities, decision splits and engagement splits
- Apply consent, suppression and frequency-control rules to reduce inappropriate or duplicate communications
- Create Automation Studio workflows that refresh journey-ready data extensions on a scheduled basis
- Test journey paths using test data, validation checklists and controlled activation procedures
- Interpret Journey Builder and Email Studio performance metrics to identify drop-off and optimisation opportunities
- Produce a documented journey blueprint with data requirements, logic, governance controls and measurement criteria
Benefits of attending
For you
- Gain practical confidence building and activating Journey Builder programmes rather than relying on agencies or technical colleagues
- Create a portfolio-ready lifecycle journey blueprint that demonstrates marketing automation capability
- Learn to diagnose common journey failures involving entry criteria, data extensions, contact relationships and re-entry settings
- Strengthen credibility in CRM, retention and customer lifecycle roles by working with Salesforce Marketing Cloud Engagement
- Translate campaign objectives into measurable automated journeys with defined conversion and engagement metrics
For your organisation
- Reduce manual campaign production by converting repeatable lifecycle communications into controlled automated journeys
- Improve customer relevance through behavioural splits, profile-based segmentation and timely trigger criteria
- Lower communication and compliance risk through documented consent, suppression, exit and frequency-control rules
- Increase implementation quality by standardising journey testing, activation checks and data dependency documentation
- Give marketing teams clearer evidence for optimisation through journey goals, reporting metrics and structured review cycles
Target competencies
Who should attend
- CRM Managers — who own lifecycle programmes and need reliable automated customer communications
- Marketing Automation Specialists — who build and maintain Salesforce Marketing Cloud journeys
- Email Marketing Managers — who need to move campaign calendars into behavioural and lifecycle automation
- Digital Marketing Executives — who segment audiences and activate personalised communications across channels
- Customer Experience Managers — who need to orchestrate consistent onboarding, retention and service journeys
- Salesforce Administrators — who support Marketing Cloud data structures and integration requirements
Requirements and prerequisites
Participants should understand the purpose of email marketing, customer segmentation and basic campaign metrics such as opens, clicks and conversions. Familiarity with Salesforce Marketing Cloud Engagement navigation, data extensions and email sends is useful, but deep platform administration or coding experience is not required. Participants should be comfortable working with spreadsheets and interpreting customer data fields such as email address, subscriber key, purchase date and consent status. Complete beginners can attend, but should expect to spend time learning Marketing Cloud terminology and data-model concepts before building more advanced journey logic. SQL, AMPscript and Salesforce CRM administration are not assumed.
Training methodology
Each day combines focused instructor-led explanation with guided configuration in a Salesforce Marketing Cloud training environment. Demonstrations show the exact settings and dependencies behind Journey Builder activities, while hands-on labs require participants to build data extensions, automations, entry sources, decision paths and reporting views. Case discussions examine common operational failures, including incorrect contact keys, uncontrolled re-entry and missing suppressions. Small-group design reviews challenge participants to defend journey logic against commercial, customer-experience and compliance requirements. The final day converts learning into an implementation-ready journey blueprint and 90-day application plan.
