Course overview
Union workforce records often sit across inconsistent employee profiles, local spreadsheets, payroll interfaces and case files. HR teams need reliable data on bargaining-unit membership, union affiliation, seniority dates, collective agreement coverage, dues eligibility and grievance-related status, while protecting sensitive information and maintaining a defensible audit trail. When these fields are poorly designed or uncontrolled, organisations face incorrect benefit or payroll treatment, flawed workforce reporting, delayed agreement administration and avoidable labour-relations risk.
This course shows participants how to configure and govern union workforce data in SAP SuccessFactors Employee Central. Participants work with Foundation Objects, Employee Central data models, custom fields, Metadata Framework (MDF) objects, business rules, workflows, role-based permissions and effective-dated records. They learn to model bargaining units and collective agreements; capture union membership and seniority data; validate changes; restrict access to sensitive fields; build operational reports; and identify integration requirements for payroll, time and downstream labour-relations processes.
Teaching combines instructor demonstrations with guided system exercises using realistic unionised workforce scenarios, including employee transfers between bargaining units, agreement renewals and corrections to seniority records. Participants leave with a documented Union Workforce Data Management Blueprint: a data dictionary, proposed object and field design, permission model, workflow map, validation-rule set and reporting specification that can be adapted for their SuccessFactors tenant. The course is particularly valuable for HRIS and labour-relations professionals who must translate collective-agreement requirements into maintainable HR data controls.
Course objectives
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Design an effective-dated bargaining-unit and collective-agreement data model using Employee Central Foundation Objects and MDF objects
- Configure union membership, seniority and agreement-coverage fields with controlled picklists, validations and change reasons
- Build business rules that assign, validate or flag union workforce data based on employee job and organisational attributes
- Create workflow routes for union-status, seniority-date and collective-agreement changes requiring HR or labour-relations approval
- Apply role-based permissions to separate employee self-service, HR administration, labour-relations and reporting access
- Produce People Analytics Stories that report headcount, bargaining-unit coverage, membership status and data-quality exceptions
- Map union workforce data interfaces using Integration Center and define reconciliation controls for payroll or time systems
- Deliver a Union Workforce Data Management Blueprint containing field definitions, governance roles, rules and reporting requirements
Benefits of attending
For you
- Gain a repeatable method for converting bargaining-unit and collective-agreement requirements into Employee Central data design
- Build credibility with labour-relations stakeholders by discussing effective dating, approvals, controls and auditability precisely
- Create report specifications that expose missing union coverage, inconsistent seniority dates and unapproved data changes
- Strengthen eligibility for HRIS analyst and SuccessFactors Employee Central configuration assignments in unionised organisations
- Leave with a portfolio-ready Union Workforce Data Management Blueprint for use in stakeholder design workshops
For your organisation
- Reduce erroneous union-related payroll, benefit and time-treatment decisions through validated workforce data
- Establish a controlled source of record for bargaining-unit, union membership, seniority and agreement-coverage information
- Improve audit readiness with effective-dated history, approval workflows and role-based access to sensitive labour data
- Shorten labour-relations reporting cycles by replacing spreadsheet consolidation with governed People Analytics Stories
- Lower implementation rework by documenting data ownership, integration mappings and exception-management controls before configuration
Target competencies
Who should attend
- HRIS Analysts — who configure Employee Central data and need to support unionised employee populations
- Labour Relations Specialists — who must translate collective-agreement rules into reliable workforce records and reports
- SAP SuccessFactors Employee Central Administrators — who maintain employee and organisational data, permissions and workflows
- HR Operations Managers — who need consistent handling of union membership, seniority and bargaining-unit changes
- Payroll and Time Integration Analysts — who reconcile union-related eligibility and employee-status data across systems
- HR Data and People Analytics Professionals — who produce defensible labour-relations workforce reporting
Requirements and prerequisites
Participants should have practical experience navigating SAP SuccessFactors Employee Central and understand core employee data concepts such as Job Information, organisational assignments, effective dating and basic role-based permissions. Familiarity with Foundation Objects, custom fields or People Analytics is useful but not essential; these features are practised during the course. Participants should also be able to interpret their organisation’s bargaining-unit, seniority and collective-agreement terminology. Prior SAP configuration certification, ABAP development, payroll configuration and legal training are not required. A laptop able to access a browser-based training tenant is required for live exercises.
Training methodology
The instructor uses a configured SAP SuccessFactors training tenant to demonstrate each design decision, then participants apply it in structured build exercises. Cases follow employees joining a bargaining unit, transferring locations, changing seniority status and moving under a renewed collective agreement. Small groups review data definitions, approval paths and access risks from both HRIS and labour-relations perspectives. Daily debriefs connect configuration choices to payroll, reporting and audit consequences. On day five, participants assemble their own Union Workforce Data Management Blueprint and receive instructor feedback on implementation priorities.
Course outline
