Course overview

Humanitarian nutrition teams are often required to establish whether acute malnutrition or mortality has crossed an emergency threshold, where the problem is concentrated, and whether a response is working. Weak sampling frames, inconsistent anthropometric measurement, poorly supervised enumerators, or invalid data-quality checks can produce estimates that misdirect scarce therapeutic feeding, blanket supplementary feeding, and community outreach resources. This course equips participants to plan and manage SMART surveys that generate defensible evidence for operational decisions, donor reporting, cluster coordination, and advocacy.

Participants work through the SMART methodology for measuring acute malnutrition and crude mortality rates in emergency-affected populations. They learn to define survey objectives and indicators; construct sampling frames; calculate sample size; select clusters and households; standardise weight, height or length, MUAC, oedema, age and sex data collection; and use ENA for SMART for survey planning, data entry and plausibility assessment. The course also covers survey-team training, field supervision, ethical practice, data cleaning, confidence intervals, design effect, survey limitations, interpretation against relevant thresholds, and technically sound reporting.

Instruction combines focused technical briefings with a running humanitarian case study. Participants practise sampling calculations, complete anthropometry standardisation exercises, review simulated field forms, enter data in ENA for SMART, and diagnose data-quality failures using plausibility outputs. By the final day, each participant produces a SMART survey protocol and analysis brief for a realistic response scenario, including objectives, sampling approach, fieldwork controls, analysis plan, and decision-oriented reporting structure.

Participants should be able to use a laptop during practical exercises; prior use of ENA for SMART is helpful but not required. This is not a clinical nutrition course and does not require advanced statistics, programming, epidemiological qualifications, or previous experience leading a SMART survey. Complete newcomers to humanitarian assessment should first gain grounding in nutrition and survey terminology.

Training methodology

The five-day programme uses instructor-led technical demonstrations, guided ENA for SMART practice, and a single emergency nutrition case that develops from assessment request to management briefing. Participants calculate samples, map cluster selection, practise measurement-quality controls, review field-team errors, and analyse a simulated dataset. Small groups act as survey management teams, making decisions on sampling, supervision and response interpretation under realistic operational constraints. The final workshop converts the case into an application plan and a field-ready protocol that participants can adapt for their own country or programme context.

Day 1: SMART purpose, indicators and survey design

Workshop: Participants convert an emergency nutrition information request into a SMART survey objective matrix and draft protocol outline.

Day 2: Sampling frames and field selection

  • Sample-size calculation for acute malnutrition prevalence

Day 3: Anthropometry, mortality and field quality control

Day 4: Data management and plausibility assessment
