Course overview
ESG teams are expected to turn environmental, social and governance data from sites, functions and suppliers into disclosures that can withstand executive, auditor and stakeholder scrutiny. The difficult work is rarely the final report: it is defining metrics consistently, assigning accountable data owners, collecting evidence on time, resolving exceptions and maintaining an auditable record of changes. This course addresses the operational challenge of using SpheraCloud Sustainability Management to control that end-to-end process rather than relying on disconnected spreadsheets and email chases.
Participants learn to structure sustainability programmes, configure reporting periods and organisational boundaries, define data-collection forms, manage workflow assignments and monitor submission status in SpheraCloud. They work with sustainability metrics, units, conversion factors, validation rules, supporting evidence and approval workflows. The course also connects platform processes to GHG Protocol principles, GRI Standards and ESRS reporting expectations, enabling participants to create traceable data sets suitable for internal performance management and external ESG reporting.
Delivery combines instructor-led demonstrations with guided work in a SpheraCloud training environment. Participants complete realistic exercises involving multi-site data requests, incomplete submissions, metric exceptions and management review. By the end of the week, each participant produces a practical Sustainability Data Collection and Reporting Blueprint: a documented design covering reporting scope, metric definitions, data-owner roles, workflow stages, validation controls, evidence requirements and dashboard outputs that can be adapted for their organisation.
The course is designed for intermediate sustainability, ESG, HSE and reporting professionals who already contribute to ESG data collection or disclosure preparation and now need to administer, improve or govern the SpheraCloud process behind it.

Requirements and prerequisites
Participants should understand their organisation’s ESG or sustainability reporting process and be familiar with core concepts such as organisational boundaries, reporting periods, data owners, activity data, performance metrics and evidence retention. Experience using spreadsheets to collect or reconcile sustainability data is helpful. Attendees should ideally have access to a SpheraCloud Sustainability Management training tenant or be scheduled on a course that provides one, and should be comfortable navigating browser-based business software. Prior SpheraCloud configuration experience, programming, database administration and detailed assurance training are not required. This is not a beginner introduction to ESG terminology or climate accounting.
Training methodology
The instructor uses a SpheraCloud training environment to demonstrate each stage of a controlled sustainability reporting cycle, then participants configure the same features in guided exercises. Short briefings on GHG Protocol, GRI and ESRS requirements are followed by case work involving a multi-site company with late submissions, missing evidence and inconsistent metrics. Small groups diagnose workflow and data-quality issues, compare control options and present their proposed design. The final session converts learning into an organisation-specific implementation blueprint with roles, metrics, controls and next actions.

Day 1: SpheraCloud sustainability reporting foundations
- SpheraCloud Sustainability Management navigation and workspace orientation
- Sustainability programme structures and organisational hierarchies
- Reporting periods, fiscal calendars and submission cycles

- User roles, permissions and data-owner accountability

Workshop: Participants map a multi-site organisation into a reporting structure and create a role-and-accountability matrix for its annual ESG reporting cycle.
Day 2: Metrics, forms and calculation controls
- Metric library design and controlled metric naming
- Units of measure and unit-conversion management
- Calculation logic and derived sustainability metrics

- Data-entry guidance and metric methodology notes
- Scope 1, Scope 2 and selected Scope 3 activity-data structures
Workshop: Participants configure a metric set and data-collection form for energy, fuel, water and waste reporting, including units, instructions and calculation rules.
Day 3: Workflow management and data-quality assurance
- Workflow stage design for submission, review and approval
