Course overview
Finance managers are often the final control point between operational transactions and statutory tax filings, yet tax data is commonly assembled late from ledgers, spreadsheets, payroll reports, procurement records and business-unit explanations. This creates exposure to missed filing deadlines, incorrect indirect-tax treatment, weak tax provisions, unreconciled tax balances and unsupported positions during an audit or tax authority enquiry. The course equips finance managers to run tax compliance as a controlled management process rather than a year-end reporting task.
Participants examine the end-to-end compliance calendar for corporate income tax, VAT/GST, withholding tax, payroll-related taxes and transfer-pricing documentation. They learn to map tax obligations to source systems, reconcile tax returns to the general ledger, test transaction coding, assess tax risks, prepare IAS 12 tax provision support, and establish evidence trails for reviews. Practical sessions cover tax control matrices, return-review checklists, tax account reconciliations, materiality thresholds, exception reporting and communication with external tax advisers.
Delivered over five instructor-led days in the classroom or live online, the programme uses realistic finance records, filing scenarios and audit queries rather than abstract tax theory. Participants work through transaction datasets in Microsoft Excel, build a compliance calendar and control matrix, investigate reconciliation breaks, and present a remediation plan to a simulated finance leadership team. Each participant leaves with a tailored Tax Compliance Operating Pack containing a tax calendar, responsibility map, control checklist, reconciliation template, issue log and 90-day implementation plan.
The course is designed for finance managers who already supervise close, reporting, payables, receivables, payroll or accounting operations and need stronger ownership of tax risk. It is particularly valuable where tax work is shared between finance, internal tax teams, outsourced advisers and multiple business units.
Course objectives
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Map corporate income tax, VAT/GST, withholding and payroll tax obligations into a controlled annual compliance calendar
- Reconcile tax returns, tax-control accounts and general-ledger balances using documented investigation steps
- Build a tax risk and control matrix that assigns owners, evidence requirements, review frequencies and escalation triggers
- Test transaction coding and supporting documentation for common indirect-tax and withholding-tax errors
- Prepare working-paper support for current tax, deferred tax and uncertain tax positions under IAS 12
- Evaluate adviser deliverables and challenge tax assumptions using materiality, source-data and legislative-evidence checks
- Design exception reports and management dashboards for overdue filings, unreconciled balances and high-risk transactions
- Produce a 90-day tax compliance improvement plan with prioritised actions, accountable owners and measurable controls
Benefits of attending
For you
- Gain a repeatable method for challenging tax figures before they reach a filing, auditor or finance director
- Build evidence-based confidence in explaining tax balances, provisions and compliance risks to senior stakeholders
- Develop practical IAS 12 working-paper skills that strengthen financial reporting and controller responsibilities

Target competencies
Who should attend
- Finance Managers — who oversee accounting operations and need defensible control of tax reporting risks
- Financial Controllers — who sign off close, statutory reporting and tax-related balance-sheet positions
- Accounting Managers — who manage ledger quality, reconciliations and source data used in tax filings
- Tax Managers — who need finance teams to provide complete, timely and auditable compliance data
- Shared Services Managers — who control accounts payable, receivable and record-to-report processes affecting tax
- Internal Audit Managers — who assess whether tax controls, evidence trails and remediation actions are operating effectively
Requirements and prerequisites
Participants should have practical experience with monthly close, general-ledger reconciliations, financial statements or statutory reporting, and should understand the purpose of corporate income tax, VAT/GST and withholding tax. Confidence reading a trial balance, tracing transactions through an ERP extract, and using Microsoft Excel for filters, formulas and pivots is assumed. Experience preparing tax returns is helpful but not essential. Participants should bring awareness of their organisation’s tax filing cycle and key systems where possible. No tax-law qualification, advanced modelling skill, specialist tax software or prior knowledge of transfer-pricing calculations is required.
Training methodology
The instructor combines focused teaching on tax compliance frameworks with guided analysis of a simulated company’s ledger extracts, invoices, payroll summaries and prior-year tax return. Participants use Microsoft Excel to trace balances, identify coding exceptions and prepare reconciliation evidence. Small groups build a tax control matrix, respond to a mock tax authority information request and challenge an adviser’s draft calculation. Daily debriefs connect technical findings to finance ownership. The final session is an application-planning workshop in which each participant completes a tailored 90-day compliance improvement plan.
