Course overview
VAT errors rarely arise from a single incorrect rate. They usually result from weak tax-point controls, incomplete evidence, incorrect place-of-supply decisions, poorly maintained tax codes, or transactions recorded without considering reverse-charge and import VAT consequences. For finance and tax professionals, these errors can create denied input-tax recovery, late-payment interest, penalties, cash-flow leakage, and difficult audit enquiries. This course equips participants to apply VAT principles consistently across sales, purchases, imports, exports, credit notes, and cross-border services while recognising where local legislation and specialist advice are required.
Participants work through the VAT lifecycle from transaction analysis to return preparation and reconciliation. They learn to identify taxable persons and taxable supplies; determine tax points, place of supply, liability, and recovery eligibility; distinguish standard-rated, reduced-rated, zero-rated, exempt, and out-of-scope transactions; apply reverse-charge procedures; and assess import and export evidence. The course also covers VAT control accounts, return-box mapping, invoice validation, adjustment calculations, and practical checks for ERP tax-code configuration. Attention is given to documenting decisions and maintaining an audit-ready evidence trail.
Delivered through instructor-led explanations, worked calculations, transaction case files, spreadsheet exercises, and facilitated control reviews, the programme uses realistic business scenarios rather than abstract tax theory. Participants complete a VAT compliance workbook containing a transaction decision tree, VAT return reconciliation, input-tax recovery assessment, exception log, and action plan for their own organisation. They leave with a repeatable framework for reviewing VAT treatment before transactions are posted or reported.
The course is suited to finance, tax, accounting, procurement, and operational professionals who already encounter VAT in their work and need a structured, practical grounding. It is particularly valuable for organisations strengthening indirect tax controls, implementing new ERP processes, expanding cross-border trade, or reducing errors identified through internal audit or tax authority review.
Course objectives
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Classify transactions by taxable supply, exempt supply, zero-rated supply, reduced-rated supply, or out-of-scope treatment
- Determine VAT tax points and place-of-supply outcomes for goods and services transactions
- Calculate output VAT, recoverable input VAT, partial-exemption adjustments, and reverse-charge liabilities
- Validate sales and purchase invoices against mandatory VAT evidence and tax-code requirements
- Map transaction records to VAT return boxes and reconcile the return to general-ledger VAT control accounts
- Apply import VAT, export evidence, intra-group, and cross-border service decision rules to case transactions
- Investigate VAT return variances using exception logs, transaction testing, and evidence tracing
- Produce a VAT compliance workbook containing controls, reconciliations, documented assumptions, and remediation actions
Benefits of attending
For you
- Build confidence in reviewing VAT treatment before invoices, journals, and returns are approved
- Strengthen credibility when explaining reverse charge, recovery restrictions, and evidence requirements to non-tax colleagues
- Develop a reusable VAT decision tree for handling unfamiliar sales, purchase, import, and service transactions
- Improve readiness for finance, indirect tax, controllership, and tax-compliance responsibilities
- Create an audit-ready record of VAT assumptions, reconciliations, and exceptions that supports defensible decisions
For your organisation
- Reduce VAT leakage from incorrect tax codes, unrecovered input tax, and unsupported zero-rating claims
- Improve accuracy and timeliness of VAT returns through clearer return-box mapping and ledger reconciliations
- Strengthen controls over supplier invoices, customer invoicing, credit notes, and cross-border transactions
- Create more consistent escalation of complex or high-risk transactions to internal tax specialists or external advisers
- Increase preparedness for tax authority audits through documented evidence trails, exception logs, and control ownership
Target competencies
Who should attend
- Financial Accountants — who prepare journals, reconciliations, and statutory reporting affected by VAT balances
- Tax Analysts — who support indirect tax returns, transaction reviews, and audit evidence requests
- Accounts Payable Managers — who need to protect input-tax recovery through supplier invoice and tax-code controls
- Accounts Receivable Managers — who oversee customer invoicing, output VAT calculation, and credit-note processing
- Finance Managers — who must review VAT risks, approve controls, and explain reporting variances
- Procurement and Supply Chain Professionals — who need to assess VAT consequences in supplier, import, and cross-border purchasing decisions
Requirements and prerequisites
Participants should understand basic double-entry accounting, including sales, purchases, general-ledger accounts, accruals, and reconciliations. Familiarity with invoices, purchase orders, credit notes, and spreadsheets is expected; participants should be able to review transaction data in Microsoft Excel using filters and simple formulas. Prior VAT training is not required, but attendees should have some exposure to business transactions or finance processes so that tax decisions can be related to real workflows. Knowledge of a specific country’s VAT legislation, SAP, Oracle, customs systems, or advanced tax calculations is not required.
Training methodology
The programme combines focused instructor-led sessions with transaction-based application. Participants analyse invoices, contracts, shipping evidence, purchase records, and general-ledger extracts to determine VAT treatment and reporting consequences. Short demonstrations show how tax codes and VAT control accounts operate in ERP-led processes, while Excel exercises develop return reconciliations and exception testing. Group case work requires participants to defend treatment decisions using evidence and assumptions. On the final day, each participant develops a practical VAT control and improvement plan tailored to their transaction flows.
