Course overview

HR policies fail when rules are copied from another employer, unclear about ownership, or disconnected from the steps managers must follow. The result is uneven treatment, avoidable grievances, poor records, and decisions that cannot be explained or audited. This course addresses the practical work of turning employment obligations and organisational choices into documents people can read, administer, and apply consistently. It also deals with the difficult boundary between a policy statement, a procedure, a manager guide, and a form.

Participants learn how to establish a policy architecture, research applicable requirements, identify risks, consult stakeholders, and draft clear policy clauses. They convert policy rules into usable procedures through process maps, decision tables, forms, checklists, service standards, and escalation routes. Core subjects include recruitment, leave, flexible work, conduct, grievance, discipline, equal opportunity, accommodation, employee data, remote work, monitoring, and AI use. Attention is given to fairness, confidentiality, document control, legal review boundaries, and evidence required during complaints or audits.

The five-day instructor-led course is available in classrooms in 50+ cities or live online. Training combines short briefings, policy critiques, realistic case work, drafting practice, group review, and implementation planning. Participants work with a structured policy-and-procedure pack and leave with reusable templates, a quality-review checklist, and a prioritised plan for revising or creating policies in their own organisation. A certificate of completion is issued to participants who complete the course.

The course suits HR professionals and managers who already work with employment practices and need to write, revise, approve, or administer HR documents with greater consistency and control.

How the course runs

Training methodology

The course uses short instructor briefings to introduce policy-writing methods, followed by case work based on realistic HR issues. Participants critique sample clauses, identify gaps in existing documents, draft selected policy sections, and convert rules into procedures using flowcharts and decision tables. Group exercises examine conflicting stakeholder requirements, fairness concerns, exceptions and approval decisions. Simulated review meetings develop consultation and implementation skills. Each participant prepares an application plan for priority documents in their workplace.

Requirements and prerequisites

Participants should have practical exposure to HR operations, employee relations, people management, compliance, or internal policy administration. They should understand common employment lifecycle activities such as recruitment, leave, performance management, conduct, and termination. Experience reading existing HR policies or advising managers is useful. The course does not require legal qualifications, prior policy-writing training, or knowledge of a specific country’s employment law. Participants should bring awareness of their organisation’s current policy issues where possible, but confidential documents are not required.
