Course overview
Digital marketing teams often report traffic, clicks and campaign reach without being able to explain where customers stall between first visit and repeat purchase. The AARRR framework—Acquisition, Activation, Retention, Referral and Revenue—provides a practical structure for diagnosing that journey. This course helps marketers replace channel-led reporting with a measurable growth model that connects campaign activity, product behaviour, customer value and commercial outcomes. It is designed for professionals who need to identify the highest-leverage growth constraint, justify investment decisions and coordinate action across marketing, product, sales and customer success.
Participants learn to define an AARRR metric tree, map customer journeys, specify measurable activation events and build funnel, cohort and retention analyses. The course covers acquisition quality by source, event taxonomy, GA4 and product analytics reporting, cohort retention, referral loop measurement, revenue attribution and experiment prioritisation. Participants practise distinguishing vanity metrics from decision metrics, setting stage-level targets and using conversion, retention and customer lifetime value data to recommend practical growth interventions.
Delivery combines instructor-led demonstrations, worked B2B and B2C growth cases, team analysis exercises and guided use of analytics dashboards. Each participant applies the framework to a selected product, service or customer journey and leaves with an AARRR growth scorecard: a documented funnel, metric definitions, tracking requirements, baseline measures, experiment backlog and 90-day measurement plan. This is a working management document that can be reviewed with stakeholders and used to focus future marketing, product and customer-experience activity.
The course is especially valuable for marketers and growth professionals who already have access to campaign or behavioural data but need a disciplined method for converting it into prioritised commercial action.
Course objectives
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Construct an AARRR metric tree linking acquisition, activation, retention, referral and revenue measures to a commercial objective
- Map a customer journey and define stage-entry, stage-exit and activation events for a digital product or campaign
- Design an event-tracking specification using consistent event names, properties, identities and conversion rules
- Analyse acquisition quality by channel using conversion rate, cost per activated user and downstream revenue measures
- Build cohort retention tables and identify behavioural patterns associated with churn and repeat use
- Calculate referral-loop performance using invite, share, referral conversion and referred-customer value metrics
- Prioritise growth experiments with an ICE scoring matrix, hypothesis statement and success metric
- Produce a 90-day AARRR growth scorecard with baselines, targets, dashboard requirements and accountable owners
Benefits of attending
For you
- Gain a repeatable method for diagnosing whether growth is constrained by acquisition, onboarding, retention, referral or monetisation
- Build confidence presenting funnel and cohort evidence to product, sales and senior leadership teams
- Create stronger campaign briefs by defining the downstream behaviour and revenue measures that matter before launch
- Develop practical product-analytics fluency that supports growth marketing, lifecycle marketing and product roles
- Leave with an AARRR scorecard and experiment backlog that demonstrate measurable strategic capability
For your organisation
- Establish a shared growth vocabulary across marketing, product, sales and customer-success teams
- Redirect budget from high-volume but low-quality acquisition sources toward channels that produce activated and retained customers
- Improve tracking discipline through clearer event definitions, ownership and dashboard requirements
- Reduce unproductive testing by prioritising experiments against a documented funnel constraint and success measure
- Create a 90-day growth measurement plan that links operational activity to retention, referral and revenue targets
Target competencies
Who should attend
- Growth Marketing Managers — who need to identify and remove funnel constraints across acquisition, activation and retention
- Digital Marketing Managers — who must connect channel spend and campaign performance to customer and revenue outcomes
- Product Marketing Managers — who need evidence of how positioning, onboarding and lifecycle messaging affect adoption
- Performance Marketing Specialists — who need to evaluate traffic quality beyond clicks, leads and cost per acquisition
- CRM and Lifecycle Marketing Managers — who design re-engagement and retention programmes using customer behaviour data
- Product Managers — who need a shared measurement framework for activation, engagement and commercial growth
Requirements and prerequisites
Participants should have practical experience with digital campaigns, websites, apps, CRM programmes or product-led customer journeys, and be comfortable interpreting basic metrics such as sessions, conversion rate, leads, revenue and campaign cost. Familiarity with spreadsheets and the purpose of web analytics tools is assumed; participants should be able to work with tables, filters and simple formulas. Access to a laptop and, where possible, anonymised funnel or campaign data is helpful. SQL, coding, statistical modelling and prior use of Mixpanel or Amplitude are not required. The course teaches the AARRR method and analytics application rather than platform administration.
Training methodology
The instructor introduces each AARRR stage through a worked growth case, then participants apply the method to a realistic digital journey or their own organisation’s offer. Hands-on sessions use sample GA4, Mixpanel and spreadsheet data to build funnels, cohorts, channel comparisons and experiment scorecards. Small groups challenge metric definitions, identify tracking gaps and defend prioritisation choices as they would in a growth review. The final day is an application-planning workshop in which participants assemble their AARRR scorecard, dashboard requirements and 90-day action plan.
Course outline
Day 1: AARRR foundations and growth measurement architecture
- The AARRR framework as a customer-growth system
- North-star metrics and supporting metric trees
- Customer journey mapping across digital touchpoints
- Stage definitions for Acquisition, Activation, Retention, Referral and Revenue
- Vanity metrics versus actionable growth metrics
- Funnel mathematics, conversion rates and leakage analysis
- Metric ownership, reporting cadence and decision rights
Workshop: Participants map a selected customer journey and produce an initial AARRR metric tree with stage definitions and decision questions.
Day 2: Acquisition quality and activation measurement
- Channel-source segmentation and acquisition-quality analysis
- UTM governance and campaign attribution inputs
- GA4 acquisition reports, explorations and conversion events
- Activation-event design for products, services and lead journeys
- Event taxonomy, user properties and identity resolution
- Google Tag Manager data-layer requirements
- Activation funnels and time-to-value measurement
Workshop: Participants create an acquisition-to-activation funnel specification, including UTM rules, events, properties and activation thresholds.
Day 3: Retention analysis and lifecycle intervention
- Retention definitions for subscription, transactional and B2B journeys
- Cohort tables by acquisition date, channel and first-use behaviour
- Rolling retention, unbounded retention and repeat-purchase measures
- Behavioural segmentation using product analytics
- Churn signals and leading indicators of disengagement
- Lifecycle messaging triggers and reactivation journeys
- Retention dashboards in Mixpanel and Amplitude
Workshop: Participants analyse a cohort dataset, identify a churn pattern and produce a targeted retention intervention with a measurement plan.
Day 4: Referral loops, revenue and growth experiments
- Referral-loop mechanics and incentive design
- Invite rate, referral conversion and viral coefficient calculation
- Revenue events, monetisation funnels and upgrade paths
- Customer lifetime value and payback-period concepts
- Attribution limitations across acquisition and revenue reporting
- Growth hypotheses and the ICE prioritisation model
