Course overview

A reputational crisis can develop faster than an organisation’s approval process, monitoring capability or spokesperson readiness. A product recall, executive misconduct allegation, cyber incident, activist campaign or misleading social-media post can quickly create conflicting narratives across journalists, employees, customers, regulators and investors. This advanced course helps communications professionals make defensible decisions under pressure, protect stakeholder trust and move from reactive statements to a disciplined reputation recovery programme.

Participants examine the full crisis communications cycle: risk sensing, scenario planning, issue escalation, stakeholder prioritisation, message architecture, media response, employee communication, executive counsel and post-crisis recovery. They learn to build a crisis narrative using verified facts, holding lines and proof points; assess sentiment and misinformation; prepare spokespeople for hostile interviews; and coordinate communication across owned, earned and social channels. Particular attention is given to governance: who approves what, when legal constraints should shape wording, and how communications leaders challenge slow or risk-averse decision making.

The programme is delivered through instructor-led briefings, crisis simulations, media analysis, team response cells and facilitated critique. Participants work with a realistic escalating scenario, using monitoring data, stakeholder maps and decision logs to develop a Crisis Communications Playbook. The final deliverable includes an escalation matrix, stakeholder contact and messaging plan, channel response framework, spokesperson briefing and reputation recovery measures that can be adapted for use within their organisation.

The course is suited to experienced communications, public affairs, marketing and corporate affairs professionals who already manage external or internal communications and need stronger command of high-consequence incidents. It is equally valuable for leaders responsible for approving public responses, briefing executives or managing agency and cross-functional crisis teams.

Course objectives

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Construct a crisis communications playbook with escalation triggers, decision rights and approval pathways
  • Apply stakeholder mapping and prioritisation methods to sequence communications during a live incident
  • Develop message architecture using holding statements, key messages, proof points and anticipated questions
  • Interpret media, social listening and sentiment data to identify narrative risks and misinformation patterns
  • Prepare executive spokespersons using hostile-interview drills, bridging techniques and message discipline
  • Design a multi-channel response plan covering employees, media, customers, regulators and social platforms
  • Facilitate a crisis communications decision cell using situation reports, action logs and communication timelines
  • Create a reputation recovery plan with trust indicators, corrective actions and post-incident communications milestones

Who should attend

  • Corporate Communications Managers — who lead public responses and coordinate communications during high-risk incidents
  • Public Relations Directors — who advise senior leaders and protect organisational reputation across media and stakeholder groups
  • Head of Communications — who need governance, escalation and response frameworks that work across functions
  • Public Affairs Managers — who manage regulator, government and community relationships during contentious events
  • Marketing and Brand Leaders — who must protect customer trust when a crisis affects products, campaigns or brand conduct
  • Senior Communications Advisers — who brief executives, prepare statements and manage agency or media relationships

Requirements and prerequisites

Participants should have practical experience in public relations, corporate communications, media relations, public affairs, marketing communications or a related role. The course assumes familiarity with core concepts such as key messages, press releases, stakeholder groups, approval processes and social-media publishing. Participants should be comfortable reviewing news coverage, drafting short communications and contributing to cross-functional meetings. Prior crisis leadership experience is useful but not essential. No specialist analytics qualification, legal qualification, crisis-management certification or prior use of Cision, Meltwater or Talkwalker is required; tool demonstrations use guided examples.

Training methodology

The programme combines instructor-led analysis of major crisis cases with practical response-cell work. Participants examine live-style media coverage, social listening dashboards, stakeholder data and evolving incident briefings, then make timed communication decisions in small teams. Workshops cover statement drafting, executive briefing, interview preparation and channel planning, with structured peer and instructor critique. Each day adds material to a Crisis Communications Playbook. On the final day, participants test their plan against an escalating simulation and identify actions for adapting it to their own governance and risk environment.

Frequently asked questions

You should already understand core communications work, such as drafting messages, dealing with stakeholders, managing media relationships or supporting communication approvals. The course builds on that foundation and focuses on complex, high-pressure decisions rather than introductory PR techniques.

A laptop is recommended for exercises involving message drafting, monitoring data and the Crisis Communications Playbook. You do not need your own subscriptions to Cision Communications Cloud, Meltwater or Talkwalker; guided examples and simulated data are used in class.

It is designed for communications professionals who may need to advise leadership, coordinate a response team or manage a public narrative during a significant incident. It also suits public affairs and brand leaders whose work intersects with regulators, customers, communities or high-profile campaigns.

Media relations courses usually focus on proactive pitching, press materials and relationship building. This course concentrates on crisis governance, rapid fact management, stakeholder sequencing, social narrative risk, executive counsel and recovery planning under uncertainty.

You can apply the methods to strengthen escalation procedures, improve crisis briefings, prepare executive Q&A packs and test communication plans before an incident occurs. The stakeholder mapping, message architecture and decision-log tools are also useful for sensitive issues that have not yet become full crises.

You leave with a completed Crisis Communications Playbook developed through the programme’s scenario work. It includes response governance, escalation triggers, stakeholder priorities, message templates, spokesperson guidance, monitoring measures and a reputation recovery framework.
