Course overview
Enterprise portfolios fail when executives approve initiatives individually but lack a disciplined way to compare strategic value, capacity demand, risk exposure, dependencies, and benefits across the whole investment estate. Senior leaders must make defensible choices when funding is constrained, transformation work competes with mandatory commitments, and delivery data is incomplete or politically contested. This course equips executives to establish portfolio governance that turns strategy into explicit investment decisions, decision rights, and measurable outcomes.
Participants learn to design an enterprise portfolio governance model covering portfolio segmentation, intake controls, investment criteria, stage gates, benefits ownership, capacity allocation, and escalation routes. They apply weighted scoring models, strategic alignment maps, portfolio Kanban, scenario analysis, risk-adjusted prioritisation, and benefits-realisation scorecards. The course also addresses how executive committees use dashboards and governance forums to challenge assumptions, rebalance funding, stop underperforming initiatives, and govern cross-business dependencies.
Teaching combines executive briefings with facilitated analysis of a realistic multi-business transformation portfolio. Working in leadership teams, participants review competing business cases, set decision thresholds, model funding scenarios, and conduct a simulated portfolio review board. Each participant leaves with an executive portfolio governance blueprint: a practical pack containing a target governance structure, decision-rights matrix, portfolio review calendar, prioritisation criteria, dashboard specification, and a 90-day implementation plan for their organisation.
The course is designed for leaders accountable for enterprise investment, strategic change, technology portfolios, transformation delivery, or benefits realisation. It is particularly valuable where existing PMO reporting produces information but does not consistently drive timely executive decisions.
Course objectives
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Design an enterprise portfolio governance operating model with defined forums, mandates, escalation paths, and decision rights
- Construct a weighted investment-prioritisation model using strategic alignment, economic value, risk, urgency, and capacity criteria
- Apply portfolio segmentation to distinguish growth, run, regulatory, transformation, and innovation investments
- Evaluate funding and capacity scenarios using portfolio-level demand, constraints, dependencies, and risk exposure
- Create a benefits-realisation governance framework with named benefit owners, measures, baselines, and review points
- Build an executive portfolio dashboard specification using leading indicators, delivery health, value metrics, and decision triggers
- Facilitate a portfolio review board using challenge questions, stage-gate evidence, exception handling, and stop-or-pivot decisions
- Produce a 90-day portfolio governance implementation roadmap for an executive sponsor or investment committee
Benefits of attending
For you
- Gain a repeatable method for defending investment choices in executive committee discussions
- Build credibility as a leader who can connect strategy, funding, capacity, risk, and realised benefits
- Develop the ability to challenge optimistic business cases using explicit evidence and decision thresholds
- Create an executive-ready governance blueprint that can support a portfolio leadership or transformation mandate
- Strengthen board-level communication through concise portfolio narratives, scenario choices, and decision-focused dashboards
For your organisation
- Improves capital and change-investment allocation through transparent, comparable prioritisation criteria
- Reduces spend on low-value or stalled initiatives by embedding stop, pivot, defer, and escalation decisions
- Clarifies accountability for benefits, funding approvals, risk acceptance, and cross-business dependencies
- Creates a consistent portfolio review cadence that surfaces capacity constraints before delivery commitments fail
- Provides executives with decision-oriented portfolio reporting rather than disconnected project status updates
Target competencies
Who should attend
- Chief Operating Officers — who must align enterprise investment decisions with operating capacity and strategic delivery
- Chief Transformation Officers — who govern cross-functional change portfolios and need authority structures that work
- Chief Information Officers — who balance digital investment, technical debt, regulatory demand, and business-sponsored initiatives
- Strategy Directors — who translate strategic priorities into portfolio selection, sequencing, and benefits commitments
- Enterprise PMO Directors — who need to move reporting functions toward evidence-based executive portfolio decisions
- Business Unit Executives — who sponsor major initiatives and must compete transparently for enterprise funding
Requirements and prerequisites
Participants should have experience sponsoring, governing, funding, or reporting on significant programmes, projects, product investments, or transformation initiatives. Familiarity with business cases, portfolio reporting, risk registers, benefits tracking, and executive steering committees is assumed. Participants should be able to interpret basic financial measures such as budget variance, forecast, return on investment, and total cost of ownership. Prior use of a PPM platform, Power BI, or Jira Align is helpful but not essential; demonstrations use representative examples. No project-management certification, advanced statistics, or software configuration experience is required.
Training methodology
The instructor uses short executive-led briefings to introduce governance patterns, followed by practical work on a simulated enterprise portfolio containing competing strategic, regulatory, technology, and operational investments. Participants interpret portfolio data, build scoring criteria, test funding scenarios, and run a chaired investment-board discussion. Small-group critiques compare governance choices against recognised portfolio-management practices. Each day closes with application work on the participant’s own context, culminating in a reviewed governance blueprint and 90-day implementation plan.
