Course overview
Executive succession fails when leadership vacancies are treated as isolated recruitment events rather than predictable business risks. Boards, CEOs and HR leaders need credible answers to difficult questions: which roles are truly business-critical, who could assume them now or within 12–36 months, what evidence supports readiness decisions, and how will continuity be maintained during an unplanned departure. This course addresses the governance, assessment and development work required to build a defensible succession system for senior executives and key leadership positions.
Participants learn to translate strategy, operating-model changes and enterprise risks into a critical-role succession architecture. They apply role-risk scoring, successor segmentation, readiness definitions, 9-box talent review calibration, leadership assessment evidence and development assignment design. The programme also covers board and executive committee reporting, confidential talent data handling, emergency succession protocols, diversity and bias controls, and scenario-based continuity planning for CEO, C-suite and business-unit leadership transitions.
Teaching combines instructor-led frameworks with executive succession casework, facilitated talent-review simulations and structured workshops using practical templates. Participants work with role profiles, bench-strength data, readiness criteria, succession slates and transition-risk scenarios rather than generic leadership theory. By the end of the week, each participant produces an executive succession and leadership continuity blueprint containing a critical-role inventory, successor pipeline map, assessment approach, development actions, governance calendar, reporting dashboard and a 90-day implementation plan.
The course is designed for experienced HR, talent, people and business leaders who already contribute to senior workforce decisions and must improve the reliability of leadership continuity planning across a function, business unit or enterprise.
Course objectives
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Prioritise executive and critical roles using a business-impact, vacancy-likelihood and transition-risk scoring model
- Construct succession slates that distinguish emergency cover, ready-now successors and 12–36 month development candidates
- Calibrate 9-box talent review decisions using performance, potential, leadership behaviour and evidence-quality criteria
- Define successor readiness profiles with role-specific experiences, capabilities, exposure requirements and risk gaps
- Design targeted development plans using stretch assignments, sponsor access, executive coaching and transition simulations
- Produce a board-ready succession dashboard showing bench strength, diversity, readiness risk and development progress
- Apply governance controls for confidential succession data, decision rights, challenge processes and bias mitigation
- Build an executive continuity playbook for planned, sudden and contested leadership transitions
Benefits of attending

Target competencies
Who should attend
- Chief Human Resources Officers — who must give boards confidence that leadership continuity risks are actively governed
- Heads of Talent Management — who design enterprise succession architecture and talent-review processes
- HR Directors and Business HR Leaders — who translate business-unit strategy into credible executive successor pipelines
- Chief Operating Officers and Business Unit Leaders — who own critical roles and need reliable leadership cover plans
- Leadership Development Directors — who must convert successor gaps into targeted executive development interventions
- Board Secretaries and Corporate Governance Professionals — who support board oversight of CEO and senior executive succession
Requirements and prerequisites
Participants should have practical experience in talent management, HR business partnering, leadership development, workforce planning or senior business management. The course assumes familiarity with performance management, competency frameworks, talent reviews and basic organisational structures, as well as the ability to interpret headcount, turnover and talent data in Excel. Experience attending executive talent discussions or working with confidential people information is beneficial. Participants do not need to be HR specialists, psychometricians, Workday administrators or SAP SuccessFactors administrators, and no prior board-level succession-planning qualification is required.
Training methodology
The programme uses short instructor-led briefings to introduce succession governance, readiness models and continuity controls, followed by practical application to realistic executive scenarios. Participants score critical roles, test successor evidence in a simulated talent-review meeting, build development pathways and respond to an abrupt C-suite departure case. Small-group work examines competing stakeholder views, confidentiality dilemmas and board-reporting requirements. Each day adds a component to an individual succession blueprint, which is reviewed through peer challenge and instructor feedback before participants complete a 90-day implementation plan.
