Course overview
Internal communications leaders are expected to do more than publish news: they must help employees understand strategic decisions, act consistently through change, raise concerns safely, and connect their work to organisational priorities. When messages are fragmented across email, Teams, intranets and leadership briefings, employees receive information without context, managers improvise, and engagement data fails to explain what needs fixing. This course addresses the advanced planning, governance and measurement required to make internal communication a credible management discipline rather than a publishing function.
Participants learn to diagnose communication problems using audience segmentation, stakeholder mapping, channel audits and employee-listening evidence. They build communication strategies for transformations, restructures, culture programmes and high-stakes operational change; write executive narratives and manager cascade materials; and design two-way communication mechanisms that produce usable insight. The course also covers editorial governance, channel architecture, leader visibility, crisis-ready employee communication, message testing and evaluation using outcome-based measures rather than reach alone.
Delivery combines instructor-led analysis, peer critique, realistic organisational cases and practical workshops using familiar workplace platforms. Participants work throughout the week on an Internal Communication and Engagement Action Plan for a live or realistic business challenge. The final deliverable includes a stakeholder and audience map, communication objectives, message architecture, channel plan, manager toolkit, listening approach, measurement dashboard and 90-day implementation roadmap. This gives both the participant and their manager a structured asset that can be adapted directly for use after the course.
The programme is designed for experienced internal communications, employee engagement, change and corporate affairs professionals who already understand basic communication planning and now need to influence senior stakeholders, govern complex communication ecosystems and demonstrate measurable organisational value.

Requirements and prerequisites
Participants should have practical experience planning or delivering internal communications, employee engagement activity, change communications or leadership messaging. They should already understand basic communication objectives, key-message writing, stakeholder identification and common employee channels such as email, intranets and collaboration platforms. Familiarity with simple survey results or engagement metrics is useful, as participants will interpret sample data and build measures. Bring a current or anticipated communication challenge if possible. No graphic-design, coding, advanced statistical analysis or specialist platform-administration skills are required, and the course does not assume certification in change management.
Training methodology
The instructor uses short advanced briefings to introduce models, then moves quickly into applied work. Participants audit a simulated communication ecosystem, interpret pulse-survey comments and channel data, and respond to a multi-stage organisational change case. Small groups critique executive messages, create manager cascade materials and defend channel choices against competing stakeholder needs. Individual coaching helps participants adapt each tool to their own organisation. On the final day, each participant assembles and presents a 90-day Internal Communication and Engagement Action Plan for peer and instructor feedback.
