Course overview
Senior NGO leaders must make difficult choices across programme quality, restricted funding, safeguarding, partner accountability and organisational sustainability. When strategy, budgets and operating models are not aligned, organisations can deliver activities without achieving outcomes, carry unmanaged compliance risk, or lose donor confidence. This course equips leaders to diagnose those issues at portfolio level and make defensible decisions about priorities, resource allocation, partnerships and performance.
Participants examine how to translate a mission and theory of change into a funded strategic plan, governance agenda and measurable programme portfolio. They learn to use results frameworks, logframes, risk registers, scenario budgets, partner due-diligence tools, dashboard reporting and OECD DAC evaluation criteria. The course also addresses donor compliance, safeguarding governance, localisation, financial stewardship, board reporting and leading organisational change during funding shocks or humanitarian escalation.
Teaching combines facilitated leadership briefings, NGO case studies, budget and risk simulations, peer review and practical workshops using realistic donor and programme documentation. Participants build an NGO Leadership Action Portfolio containing a strategic priority map, portfolio scorecard, risk treatment plan, partner oversight approach and 90-day implementation plan. This gives both the participant and their sponsoring organisation a usable set of management outputs rather than a purely theoretical learning record.
The course is designed for experienced programme, operations, finance and executive leaders in national and international NGOs, civil society organisations and humanitarian agencies who influence organisational decisions and cross-functional delivery.
Course objectives
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Design a mission-aligned NGO strategy using a theory of change, strategic priorities and measurable outcome targets
- Build a programme portfolio scorecard that combines results, cost, risk, equity and donor-funding criteria
- Construct scenario budgets and funding-gap analyses for restricted, unrestricted and multi-year income streams
- Apply a donor compliance control matrix to manage grant conditions, reporting deadlines and audit evidence
- Develop an enterprise risk register with risk appetite thresholds, ownership, treatment actions and escalation routes
- Assess implementing partners using due-diligence, capacity-assessment and performance-monitoring criteria
- Create board-level performance dashboards using results indicators, financial variance and risk data
- Produce a 90-day leadership action plan for implementing governance, portfolio or operating-model improvements
Benefits of attending
For you
- Gain a repeatable method for making portfolio decisions when mission priorities, donor restrictions and operating costs conflict
- Strengthen credibility in executive and board discussions through evidence-based dashboards, risk analysis and scenario budgets
- Learn to challenge weak programme designs, unsupported assumptions and unfunded delivery commitments constructively
- Build practical confidence in leading cross-functional conversations on safeguarding, compliance, localisation and sustainability
- Leave with a leadership action portfolio that can support promotion into country director, programme director or executive roles
For your organisation
- Improves alignment between organisational strategy, programme selection, annual budgets and donor-funding plans
- Reduces grant, safeguarding and partner-management exposure through clearer control matrices and escalation routes
- Supports stronger board and senior-management decisions with concise portfolio, risk and financial performance dashboards
- Identifies underperforming, high-risk or unfunded activities before they weaken organisational sustainability
- Creates a practical 90-day improvement plan that can be applied to current grants, partner relationships and management routines
Target competencies
Who should attend
- Executive Directors and Country Directors — who set organisational direction and must balance mission delivery with financial sustainability
- Directors of Programmes — who oversee multiple projects and need to improve portfolio quality, results and resource allocation
- Heads of Operations — who must connect compliance, safeguarding, procurement and support systems to programme delivery
- Finance Directors and Grants Managers — who manage donor restrictions, budget variance and evidence for accountable stewardship
- Monitoring, Evaluation, Accountability and Learning Leaders — who need to turn programme evidence into senior-management decisions
- Partnerships and Business Development Directors — who shape funding strategies and oversee partner capacity and donor commitments
Requirements and prerequisites
Participants should have at least three years of experience managing NGO programmes, grants, operations, finance or partnerships, with responsibility for budgets, staff, partners or donor reporting. They should already understand the basic project cycle, logframes or results frameworks, annual budgeting, grant agreements and common donor reporting requirements. Familiarity with Microsoft Excel is assumed, including working with tables and simple formulas. Participants should bring awareness of their organisation’s strategy, funding mix and current management challenges. No prior Power BI, KoboToolbox or formal board-governance qualification is required.
Training methodology
The course uses instructor-led briefings to establish advanced NGO management methods, followed by applied work on a realistic multi-country NGO case. Participants review a strategy, grant portfolio, donor conditions, partner files, budget variances and safeguarding concerns, then make leadership decisions in small groups. Workshops use Excel-based scenario models, risk registers and dashboard templates; peer critique tests the quality of each decision. Each day closes with an application task, culminating in an individual 90-day plan tailored to the participant’s own organisation.
