Course overview
Organisations rarely suffer from a shortage of project ideas; they suffer from too many initiatives competing for finite capital, specialist capacity and executive attention. Portfolio leaders need to distinguish strategically valuable investments from projects that merely have vocal sponsors, quantify trade-offs, and stop or reshape work when expected benefits no longer justify the cost. This course addresses the governance, analytical and decision-making disciplines required to maintain an investable project portfolio and demonstrate that approved initiatives deliver measurable value.
Participants learn to design weighted prioritisation models, define investment criteria, score strategic alignment, assess risk-adjusted value, and model resource and funding constraints. The course covers portfolio segmentation, dependency mapping, scenario analysis, capacity-based portfolio balancing, stage-gate decisions and benefits realisation management. Participants practise developing benefits maps, benefit profiles, ownership structures, leading and lagging indicators, and benefits tracking dashboards that connect project outputs to operational and financial outcomes.
Instructor-led workshops use a realistic multi-project investment portfolio containing competing business cases, constrained delivery capacity and uncertain benefit assumptions. Participants work with Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Project and Power BI to score initiatives, test portfolio scenarios, construct a benefits register and prepare an executive portfolio recommendation. Each participant leaves with a practical Portfolio Prioritisation and Benefits Realisation Pack, including a scoring model, governance workflow, benefits map, benefit profile template and dashboard requirements that can be adapted for their organisation.
The course is designed for experienced project, programme, PMO, transformation and investment professionals who influence which initiatives receive funding and how value is tracked after delivery.

Requirements and prerequisites
Participants should have practical experience working on projects, programmes, PMOs, business cases or investment governance. They should understand core concepts including project lifecycle stages, budgets, schedules, risks, stakeholders, business cases and basic financial measures such as costs, cash flow and return on investment. Confidence using spreadsheets is expected; participants will work with formulas, tables and charts in Microsoft Excel. Prior use of Microsoft Project or Power BI is helpful but not essential. Formal PMP, PRINCE2, MSP, MoP or finance qualifications are not required, and the course does not require advanced statistical modelling or accounting expertise.
Training methodology
The five-day programme combines focused instructor-led teaching with portfolio decision laboratories. Participants analyse a common case portfolio, build and calibrate a weighted scoring model in Excel, identify dependencies and capacity conflicts, and compare alternative investment scenarios. Small groups conduct investment committee simulations, where they defend funding, sequencing, pause and termination recommendations using evidence. Benefits workshops convert selected initiatives into benefits maps, profiles and measures. The final session is an application-planning clinic in which participants adapt the course templates to their own portfolio context and receive facilitator feedback.

Workshop: Participants diagnose a case organisation's fragmented investment process and draft a portfolio decision architecture with intake criteria and governance roles.
Day 2: Advanced project prioritisation models

Day 4: Benefits realisation design and control
