Course overview
Complex litigation, investigations, regulatory responses, transactions and remediation programmes rarely progress in a straight line. New evidence, changing stakeholder demands, urgent disclosure deadlines and dependencies across counsel, experts, business teams and technology providers can quickly make a conventional legal matter plan obsolete. This course equips legal professionals to introduce disciplined Agile practices without compromising privilege, professional judgement, governance or matter-control requirements.
Participants learn how to apply Agile and hybrid project-management methods to legal work that is uncertain, iterative and deadline-driven. They will build matter backlogs, write legally meaningful user stories, prioritise work using MoSCoW and value-versus-risk criteria, run Kanban boards and sprint planning sessions, define work-in-progress limits, manage dependencies and use burndown, cumulative-flow and throughput data to forecast delivery. The course also addresses legal-specific controls: privilege-aware task design, escalation routes, external counsel coordination, budget governance, document-review workflows and defensible reporting to clients or senior management.
Teaching combines instructor-led demonstrations with a running complex-matter case study involving an internal investigation, parallel regulatory requests and external counsel workstreams. Participants configure a visual matter-management workflow, facilitate Agile ceremonies, analyse delivery data and respond to simulated scope changes. Each participant leaves with an Agile Legal Matter Delivery Playbook: a practical pack containing a matter charter, prioritised backlog, Kanban design, governance cadence, stakeholder map, reporting dashboard specification and 90-day implementation plan.
The course is designed for experienced legal practitioners and legal operations professionals who already manage substantial matters and need a more adaptive way to control workload, cost, risk and stakeholder expectations.
Course objectives
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Design an Agile legal matter charter that defines outcomes, decision rights, constraints and governance boundaries
- Create a prioritised legal work backlog using epics, user stories, acceptance criteria and MoSCoW categorisation
- Configure a Kanban workflow with explicit policies, work-in-progress limits, service classes and escalation triggers
- Facilitate sprint planning, daily coordination, review and retrospective sessions for multi-party legal workstreams
- Apply privilege-aware task decomposition to separate legal advice, factual investigation, document review and business actions
- Forecast matter delivery using throughput, cycle time, cumulative-flow diagrams and burndown data
- Build a hybrid Agile governance model linking matter plans, budgets, risk registers and executive reporting
- Produce an Agile Legal Matter Delivery Playbook for implementation on a live or upcoming matter
Benefits of attending
For you
- Gain a defensible method for managing changing legal scope without relying on informal email coordination
- Learn to lead concise matter ceremonies that surface blockers, ownership gaps and deadline risks early
- Build confidence interpreting flow metrics when discussing delivery forecasts with partners, general counsel or clients
- Develop a reusable Agile Legal Matter Delivery Playbook for high-value matters and career portfolio evidence
- Strengthen credibility for legal operations, matter management and strategic in-house leadership roles
For your organisation
- Improve visibility of work, dependencies and blockers across internal legal teams, external counsel and business stakeholders
- Reduce missed handoffs and avoidable rework through explicit workflow policies and acceptance criteria
- Provide earlier, evidence-based delivery forecasts using throughput and cycle-time data rather than status impressions
- Control scope growth and budget exposure through prioritised backlogs, governance thresholds and regular reviews
- Create a repeatable hybrid delivery model that preserves legal privilege, accountability and executive oversight
Target competencies
Who should attend
- Legal Operations Managers — who need repeatable methods to improve matter visibility, workflow control and outside-counsel coordination
- Senior In-House Counsel — who lead complex matters while balancing legal risk, business urgency and constrained internal capacity
- Legal Project Managers — who must adapt plans and reporting when litigation, investigations or transactions change rapidly
- Litigation Managers — who coordinate counsel, e-discovery, experts and internal stakeholders across high-volume workstreams
- Compliance and Investigations Leaders — who manage evolving fact patterns, regulatory deadlines and cross-functional remediation actions
- Law Firm Matter Managers — who need transparent delivery controls for sophisticated client matters and alternative fee arrangements
Requirements and prerequisites
Participants should have practical experience supporting, leading or coordinating legal matters such as disputes, investigations, transactions, regulatory work or large advisory programmes. They should understand basic legal-matter concepts including scope, milestones, budgets, risks, stakeholders, confidentiality and privilege. Familiarity with a task tracker, spreadsheet or matter-management system is useful; participants will work with example Kanban boards and reporting data during the course. Prior Agile certification, software administration skills, coding knowledge and formal project-management qualifications are not required. This is not a course on substantive law, e-discovery platform operation or legal billing rules.
Training methodology
The course uses short instructor-led briefings followed by applied work on a simulated internal investigation with regulatory, employment, e-discovery and external-counsel workstreams. Participants translate matter facts into backlogs, workflow boards, risk controls and reporting routines, then test their designs against changing evidence, urgent requests and budget pressure. Small groups conduct planning, review and retrospective sessions using assigned legal-team roles. The final day is devoted to assembling an implementation-ready playbook and receiving structured instructor and peer feedback on its suitability for a real matter environment.
