Course overview

Project sponsors are asked to make timely investment, priority and escalation decisions while delivery teams work through changing requirements, iterative releases and competing portfolio demands. Traditional PMO reporting can obscure the information sponsors need: whether a product increment is creating value, whether risks are being managed early, and whether funding should continue, change or stop. This course equips sponsors to govern Agile initiatives without imposing stage-gate controls that slow delivery or reduce team accountability.

Participants learn how an Agile PMO supports strategic alignment, portfolio flow, benefits realisation and transparent decision-making. They practise setting outcome-based sponsorship mandates, defining guardrails, interpreting Agile delivery metrics, reviewing roadmaps and dependency maps, and using governance forums to remove organisational impediments. The course covers investment hypotheses, lean business cases, value-stream funding, release governance, risk escalation, supplier oversight and the practical distinction between sponsor accountability, PMO assurance and delivery-team responsibility.

Teaching combines instructor-led briefings with sponsor decision simulations, portfolio review workshops and analysis of realistic dashboard data. Participants work with Jira, Microsoft Project and Power BI examples to turn delivery evidence into investment decisions. By the end of the week, each participant produces an Agile Sponsorship and PMO Governance Pack containing a sponsor charter, decision-rights matrix, outcome measures, reporting dashboard specification, governance cadence and 90-day implementation plan.

The programme is designed for leaders who approve, sponsor or oversee Agile and hybrid change initiatives, as well as PMO professionals who must create governance that senior sponsors will actually use. It is particularly valuable where an organisation is moving from project-control reporting to product, programme or portfolio-based investment management.

Course objectives

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Define an outcome-based sponsor charter with accountabilities, decision rights and escalation thresholds
  • Assess lean business cases using investment hypotheses, expected benefits and evidence-based continuation criteria
  • Interpret Agile delivery metrics including throughput, cycle time, burn-up and predictability for sponsor decisions
  • Design a PMO governance cadence that combines portfolio reviews, release checkpoints and team-level transparency
  • Create a benefits realisation map linking strategic objectives, product outcomes, measures and accountable owners
  • Prioritise initiatives using cost of delay, weighted scoring and portfolio capacity constraints
  • Evaluate delivery risks and dependencies through RAID logs, dependency maps and escalation pathways
  • Produce an Agile Sponsorship and PMO Governance Pack for application in a live organisational context

Benefits of attending

For you

  • Gain a defensible method for challenging delivery status reports and asking for decision-relevant evidence
  • Build credibility as a sponsor who protects outcomes while respecting Agile team autonomy
  • Learn to distinguish useful flow and value metrics from activity-based reporting that masks delivery issues
  • Develop a reusable governance pack for sponsoring Agile, hybrid and product-led initiatives
  • Prepare for broader portfolio, programme sponsorship or PMO leadership responsibilities

For your organisation

  • Improve investment decisions through explicit continuation criteria, benefits measures and portfolio evidence
  • Reduce late-stage surprises by escalating dependencies, delivery risks and capacity constraints earlier
  • Replace inconsistent status reporting with sponsor-focused dashboards tied to outcomes and flow
  • Create clearer accountability between sponsors, PMO teams, product leaders and delivery teams
  • Increase the likelihood that Agile initiatives realise measurable business benefits rather than only deliver outputs

Who should attend

  • Project Sponsors — who approve investment and must make informed continuation, change or stop decisions
  • Programme Sponsors — who oversee multiple interdependent Agile initiatives and benefits across a programme
  • PMO Directors — who need governance models that provide assurance without creating delivery drag
  • Portfolio Managers — who balance strategic demand, capacity, funding and cross-initiative dependencies
  • Business Change Leaders — who own adoption and measurable business outcomes from Agile delivery
  • Senior Product Leaders — who need to connect product roadmaps with executive investment governance

Requirements and prerequisites

Participants should have basic experience of sponsoring, managing, assuring or receiving reports on projects, programmes or change initiatives. Familiarity with common project concepts such as business cases, milestones, risks, budgets, stakeholders and governance meetings is assumed. A working awareness of Agile terms such as backlog, sprint, product owner and release is helpful, but detailed Scrum or SAFe knowledge is not required. Participants do not need to be Agile practitioners, PMO specialists, data analysts or Jira administrators. A laptop is useful for the dashboard and governance-pack exercises, but no specialist software licence or technical configuration is required.

Training methodology

The course uses short instructor-led modules to establish governance principles, followed by practical work on a continuing Agile transformation case. Participants review simulated Jira data, portfolio demand, funding assumptions, risk logs and executive reporting packs, then make sponsor-level decisions in facilitated groups. Workshops use templates for sponsor charters, benefits maps, governance cadences and dashboard specifications. Daily debriefs compare decisions against delivery evidence. On day five, participants assemble and peer-review an implementation-ready Agile Sponsorship and PMO Governance Pack for their own organisational setting.

Course outline

Day 1: The Sponsor’s Role in Agile PMO Governance

  • Sponsor accountability versus product owner, programme manager and PMO responsibilities
  • Agile, hybrid and traditional delivery governance operating models
  • Outcome statements, strategic alignment and measurable value hypotheses
  • Decision rights using RACI and delegated authority matrices
  • Governance guardrails that preserve team autonomy
  • Sponsor information needs across discovery, delivery and release
  • PMO services for assurance, enablement and portfolio visibility

Workshop: Participants diagnose a failing governance model and produce a sponsor decision-rights matrix for the case organisation.

Day 2: Investment, Prioritisation and Benefits Realisation

  • Lean business cases and assumptions-led investment proposals
  • Investment hypotheses, leading indicators and evidence thresholds
  • Cost of delay and weighted shortest job first prioritisation
  • Portfolio capacity allocation across strategic themes
  • Benefits maps linking outputs, outcomes and strategic objectives
  • Value-stream funding versus project-by-project budget control
  • Continuation, pivot and stop decision criteria

Workshop: Participants prioritise a constrained portfolio and create a benefits realisation map with sponsor-owned decision triggers.

Day 3: Reading Agile Delivery Evidence

  • Jira dashboards for executive-level delivery visibility
  • Burn-up charts, release forecasts and scope-change interpretation
  • Throughput, cycle time and work-in-progress flow metrics
  • Predictability measures and confidence-based forecasting
  • Microsoft Project roadmaps for hybrid milestone governance
  • Power BI portfolio dashboards and metric drill-downs
  • Distinguishing delivery activity metrics from customer outcome measures

Workshop: Participants analyse a simulated dashboard pack and write a sponsor briefing identifying decisions, concerns and evidence gaps.

Day 4: Risk, Dependencies and Governance Interventions

  • Agile RAID management and risk appetite thresholds
  • Cross-team dependency mapping and critical-path exposure
  • Escalation design for blockers beyond team control
  • Release readiness criteria and operational acceptance evidence
  • Supplier governance in Agile delivery contracts
  • Assurance reviews without duplicating team ceremonies
  • Governance forums for portfolio, programme and release decisions

Workshop: Participants facilitate a sponsor escalation workshop and produce a dependency map, risk response plan and governance calendar.

Day 5: Implementing the Agile Sponsorship Model

  • Sponsor charter structure and executive communication commitments
  • PMO reporting standards and minimum viable dashboard design
  • Governance cadence design for monthly portfolio and quarterly investment reviews
  • Stakeholder mapping for finance, procurement, operations and delivery leaders

Frequently asked questions

No. The course explains the Agile concepts sponsors need, including backlogs, releases, flow metrics and product outcomes. Prior experience with project governance, business cases or executive reporting is more useful than detailed practitioner-level Scrum knowledge.

A laptop is recommended because participants work with dashboard examples and build their governance pack during the course. Training datasets and templates are provided, so no Jira, Microsoft Project or Power BI licence is required.

No. It suits anyone making investment, priority, risk or benefits decisions for Agile initiatives, including programme sponsors, portfolio managers, PMO directors and business change leaders. The activities focus on the decisions the role makes rather than job title.

Agile project management and Scrum Master courses concentrate on planning, facilitation and delivery-team practices. This course focuses on executive sponsorship, PMO governance, funding, assurance, benefits and portfolio decisions without teaching participants to run daily Agile ceremonies.

Participants leave with a sponsor charter, decision-rights matrix, dashboard specification, benefits map and governance cadence tailored during the final application workshop. These can be adapted for a current project, programme or portfolio review within the first 90 days.

You will leave with an Agile Sponsorship and PMO Governance Pack containing practical templates populated against a realistic or workplace-based scenario. It includes the key artefacts needed to improve reporting, escalation, investment reviews and benefits oversight.
