Course overview
Agricultural producers, aggregators and buyers lose value when produce reaches the wrong market, arrives late, is handled inconsistently, or cannot meet buyer specifications. Fresh commodities add difficult constraints: short shelf life, variable harvest volumes, fragmented suppliers, weak rural transport links, temperature exposure and rapidly changing prices. This course helps professionals design distribution decisions that protect product quality, control logistics cost and connect produce with viable wholesale, retail, institutional and export markets.
Participants examine the full route from farm collection to final market. They learn to segment customers, assess market access requirements, map produce flows, select collection and distribution models, plan transport and cold-chain controls, calculate delivered cost, and set practical service levels. The programme also covers grading, packing, traceability, route planning, inventory rotation, post-harvest loss measurement, buyer contracts and performance dashboards for produce distribution operations.
Instruction combines facilitator-led analysis with practical spreadsheets, market-channel case studies and group planning workshops. Participants work with a realistic commodity distribution scenario to compare market options, build a collection-and-delivery network, identify handling risks and calculate margin by channel. Requirements and prerequisites
This is a foundation-to-intermediate course. Participants should be comfortable with basic arithmetic, percentages and simple spreadsheet entry, and should understand their organisation’s produce, customers and current delivery process. Familiarity with terms such as supplier, buyer, transport cost, inventory and quality inspection is helpful but not essential. Participants will use Microsoft Excel templates during exercises; prior formula-writing expertise is not required. No degree in agriculture, prior logistics qualification, QGIS experience, cold-chain certification or knowledge of export documentation is required. Complete beginners should expect a practical introduction before progressing to applied distribution planning.
Training methodology
The instructor uses short, decision-focused teaching sessions followed by produce-specific application work. Participants analyse buyer specification sheets, map a farm collection network, calculate delivered cost in Microsoft Excel and compare wholesale, retail and institutional channels. Small groups work through cases involving rejected loads, temperature exposure, fragmented farmer deliveries and changing market prices. QGIS demonstrations show how collection points and market destinations can be visualised. The final workshop converts the course case and each participant’s workplace context into a 90-day distribution and market-access plan.

Day 1: Produce markets and distribution system design

Workshop: Participants map the current and target distribution network for a selected commodity and identify three flow bottlenecks.
Day 2: Quality preservation, handling and traceability

- Packaging selection for protection, ventilation and stackability
- Pre-cooling, temperature monitoring and cold-chain handovers
- FEFO stock rotation and short-shelf-life inventory control
