Course overview
Major change programmes often stall because leaders concentrate on resistance, gaps and corrective action while overlooking the capabilities, relationships and past successes that can support adoption. This course equips change leaders to use Appreciative Inquiry (AI) as a disciplined strengths-based change method for restructures, digital transformation, culture change, service redesign and post-merger integration. Participants learn how to engage stakeholders without minimising legitimate risks, operational constraints or difficult performance issues.
The course applies the Appreciative Inquiry 4-D Cycle—Discover, Dream, Design and Destiny—to real organisational change challenges. Participants practise framing affirmative inquiry topics, conducting high-quality appreciative interviews, identifying positive core themes, developing shared change images, and converting stakeholder aspirations into practical design propositions. They also connect AI with established change practices including stakeholder analysis, ADKAR readiness assessment, communication planning, sponsor mobilisation and adoption measurement.
Teaching combines instructor-led method demonstrations, facilitated inquiry interviews, small-group analysis of change cases, visual design workshops and peer critique. Participants work throughout the week on a live or realistic organisational change initiative. They leave with a documented Appreciative Inquiry Change Blueprint: a stakeholder inquiry plan, interview guide, positive-core analysis, future-state design propositions, 90-day action plan, communications approach and measures for tracking adoption.
The programme is suited to experienced managers, HR and OD practitioners, transformation professionals, project leaders and internal consultants who already work with organisational change and need a participative alternative to deficit-led diagnosis. It is particularly valuable where trust, cross-functional ownership and sustained behaviour change are as important as technical implementation.
Course objectives
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Frame an affirmative inquiry topic that links a business change mandate to observable stakeholder outcomes
- Conduct Appreciative Inquiry interviews using paired questions, active listening and evidence capture
- Analyse interview data to identify positive-core themes, enabling conditions and transferable success patterns
- Facilitate a Dream phase workshop that produces credible, stakeholder-owned future-state images
- Convert aspirations into Design propositions, process principles and prioritised change experiments
- Integrate the 4-D Cycle with ADKAR assessments, stakeholder maps and sponsor actions
- Build a strengths-based change communication plan with audience-specific messages and feedback loops
- Produce an Appreciative Inquiry Change Blueprint with a 90-day implementation and measurement plan
Benefits of attending
For you
- Gain a repeatable facilitation method for moving change conversations from blame and resistance toward evidence-based possibility
- Build credibility as a change practitioner who can connect stakeholder engagement to implementation decisions
- Create interview guides, design propositions and workshop formats that can be reused in future change assignments
- Learn to challenge unrealistic optimism while preserving the constructive focus of a strengths-based inquiry
- Leave with a portfolio-quality Change Blueprint that demonstrates advanced participative change capability
For your organisation
- Improves stakeholder ownership by involving employees in defining workable future-state practices
- Reduces change fatigue by identifying existing strengths and successful behaviours that can be scaled
- Produces clearer design requirements from frontline evidence rather than assumptions made by the programme team
- Strengthens sponsor communication through positive, credible stories of change already working in the organisation
- Creates a measurable 90-day adoption plan linking change activities to behavioural and operational indicators
Target competencies
Who should attend
- Change Managers — who need a participative method for building ownership during complex change
- Organisation Development Practitioners — who design culture, capability and engagement interventions
- Transformation Programme Managers — who must align multiple workstreams around a shared future state
- HR Business Partners — who support leaders through workforce, operating-model and behavioural change
- Senior Managers and Department Heads — who need to mobilise teams without relying solely on top-down communication
- Internal Consultants and Project Managers — who facilitate stakeholder engagement for operational or technology change
Requirements and prerequisites
Participants should have practical experience of leading, sponsoring, supporting or being affected by an organisational change initiative. Familiarity with basic change concepts—stakeholders, sponsors, resistance, communications, adoption and implementation planning—is assumed, along with confidence contributing to facilitated group discussions. Participants should bring a current or recent change case that can be used for application exercises, although a supplied case study can be used where confidentiality prevents this. No prior Appreciative Inquiry certification, coaching qualification, statistical analysis capability or specialist software expertise is required. The course teaches the 4-D Cycle and its connection to ADKAR from first principles.
Training methodology
The programme uses short instructor-led briefings to establish the Appreciative Inquiry method, followed by repeated practice in each stage of the 4-D Cycle. Participants conduct paired appreciative interviews, code evidence into positive-core themes, and facilitate mini Dream and Design workshops using supplied templates. Case studies address technology implementation, culture integration and service improvement, allowing participants to test when strengths-based inquiry is appropriate and when direct risk intervention is necessary. Each participant receives structured peer and instructor feedback while developing an end-of-course application plan for a live change initiative.
