Course overview
Workplace confidence is tested in specific moments: declining an unrealistic deadline, challenging an unclear decision, asking a colleague to meet an agreed standard, contributing in a senior meeting, or responding when someone interrupts or dismisses a concern. Many capable professionals either soften the message until it is ignored, avoid the conversation altogether, or become overly forceful when pressure builds. This course develops the disciplined middle ground: communicating needs, boundaries, evidence and decisions clearly while maintaining constructive working relationships.
Participants learn how to distinguish assertive, passive, aggressive and passive-aggressive behaviour; structure direct messages; make evidence-based requests; and respond to resistance without retreating or escalating. They practise the DESC script for difficult conversations, the SBI feedback model, boundary-setting language, questioning and listening techniques, and practical methods for handling interruptions, criticism, conflict and unreasonable demands. The course also addresses communication across hierarchy, remote meetings and culturally diverse teams, where tone, status and ambiguity can make direct communication more difficult.
This is an instructor-led, five-day programme delivered in the classroom or live online. Short teaching sessions are followed by filmed or observed role plays, message-rewriting drills, peer coaching and realistic workplace cases. Participants work with their own upcoming conversations where appropriate, receive structured feedback against an assertiveness observation checklist, and build a personal Assertive Communication Action Plan. They leave with prepared conversation scripts, a boundary-setting toolkit, a feedback template and a 30-day workplace practice plan.
The programme suits professionals who need to speak with greater clarity and authority without damaging rapport, including individual contributors, new managers and experienced specialists whose expertise must influence colleagues, customers or senior stakeholders.
Course objectives
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Differentiate assertive, passive, aggressive and passive-aggressive communication using observable behavioural indicators
- Construct clear requests and boundary statements using the DESC conversation framework
- Deliver developmental feedback using the Situation-Behaviour-Impact model and an agreed next step
- Prepare evidence-led messages for challenging decisions, changing priorities and unrealistic deadlines
- Use questioning, paraphrasing and calibrated listening to uncover concerns before responding
- Respond to interruptions, criticism and pushback with concise assertive language
- Adapt assertive communication for senior stakeholders, remote meetings and cross-cultural interactions
- Produce a 30-day Assertive Communication Action Plan with scripted workplace conversations

For you
- Handle difficult conversations with a repeatable script rather than relying on instinct

For your organisation
- Improve escalation quality by helping staff raise risks, dependencies and capacity constraints early

- Strengthen manager-led performance conversations through consistent feedback and expectation-setting methods
- Prevent avoidable conflict escalation by giving teams practical language for addressing issues directly
- Improve decision quality when specialists can state evidence, objections and recommendations with confidence
Target competencies
Who should attend
- New and aspiring managers — who must set expectations and address performance issues clearly
- Project managers — who need to challenge scope, deadlines and resource assumptions across teams
- Technical specialists — who must explain risks and defend evidence-based recommendations
- Team leaders and supervisors — who need to delegate, give feedback and maintain standards
- Customer-facing professionals — who must manage demanding requests without making unsustainable commitments
- Individual contributors — who want to contribute ideas, raise concerns and set workable boundaries
Requirements and prerequisites
This is a foundation-to-intermediate course and no prior communication qualification is required. Participants should have experience of routine workplace conversations, meetings, email or chat communication, and at least one current situation in which they need to be clearer, more confident or more direct. Familiarity with their organisation’s reporting lines, performance expectations and communication channels will help them apply the exercises. A complete beginner should expect guided practice in core concepts such as feedback, active listening, requests and boundaries. No personality assessment, coaching background, public-speaking experience or specialist software knowledge is required.
Training methodology
The instructor uses short demonstrations to model precise wording, tone and sequencing, then moves quickly into application. Participants rewrite vague emails and meeting statements, prepare DESC and SBI scripts, and practise role plays involving deadline pressure, poor performance, senior challenge and stakeholder resistance. Peers use an assertiveness observation checklist to give focused feedback on clarity, evidence, listening and boundary language. Cases are adapted for classroom or live online delivery using breakout groups and shared documents. The final day includes individual application planning for live workplace conversations.
