Course overview

Security teams need more than live camera views to manage incidents, protect people, and meet evidential, privacy, and operational requirements. In hospitals, industrial sites, campuses, utilities, and large facilities, operators must rapidly identify relevant footage, verify alarms, coordinate response, preserve video, and produce defensible evidence. Poorly configured views, inconsistent alarm handling, excessive retention, and weak export practices can delay investigations and expose the organisation to safety, compliance, and reputational risk.

This five-day Avigilon Control Center (ACC) course develops the operational and supervisory skills required to use ACC as a video security management platform. Participants configure logical sites, camera groups, maps, layouts, users, roles, alarms, bookmarks, and retention settings; search recorded footage using timeline controls, motion search, and Appearance Search; investigate incidents; export authenticated evidence; and document operator actions. The course also addresses video-security procedures for health, safety, and environmental events, including restricted-area entry, vehicle incidents, lone-worker concerns, spills, and emergency response.

Training is delivered through instructor-led demonstrations, guided ACC Client exercises, incident-based investigations, and group configuration workshops using realistic camera and alarm scenarios. Participants work through the complete sequence from alarm receipt to evidence export and incident handover. Each participant leaves with an ACC operating and incident-response workbook containing their configured monitoring plan, alarm response logic, investigation checklist, evidence-export record, and recommendations for applying the approach at their own site.

The course is designed for intermediate security professionals who already understand CCTV operations and now need to administer, supervise, or standardise use of Avigilon Control Center across a live security environment.

Requirements and prerequisites

Participants should have practical experience using CCTV or video management systems in a security, facilities, operations, or HSE setting. They should understand basic camera concepts such as live versus recorded video, camera views, event or alarm notifications, and the purpose of access permissions. Familiarity with Windows desktop navigation, file management, and standard incident-reporting processes is assumed. Prior use of Avigilon Control Center is helpful but not essential. Participants do not need to install ACC, configure network switches, design IP networks, programme cameras, or hold a cybersecurity qualification; these are not the focus of the course.

Training methodology

The instructor uses a live ACC training environment to demonstrate each workflow before participants complete it themselves in ACC Client. Short technical briefings cover configuration choices, permissions, retention, privacy, and evidential controls; guided labs then require participants to configure views, alarms, users, and searches. Case studies model realistic HSE and security events, including restricted-area access and vehicle-pedestrian incidents, with teams deciding what to verify, preserve, escalate, and record. The final workshop converts learning into a site-specific operating and incident-response plan.

Day 1: ACC architecture and operational workspace

  • Avigilon Control Center architecture, roles, and client-server communication
  • ACC Client navigation, views, tabs, and workspace management
  • Camera groups, logical IDs, naming conventions, and device organisation
  • Live video monitoring controls, PTZ operation, and digital zoom
  • Maps, map layers, camera placement, and situational awareness
  • Custom layouts, saved views, and operator monitoring profiles
  • Video quality, stream selection, bandwidth awareness, and display settings

Workshop: Participants configure a control-room workspace for a multi-building site and produce saved layouts, a camera map, and an operator monitoring profile.

Day 2: Users, alarms, and response control

  • User accounts, groups, roles, and least-privilege permission design
  • Camera, export, search, and administration permission boundaries
  • Alarm sources, alarm triggers, priorities, and acknowledgement states
  • Alarm actions, associated cameras, maps, and response instructions
  • Alarm queues, filtering, escalation, and supervisor review
  • Standard operating procedures for security and HSE alarm events
  • Audit trails, operator accountability, and exception review

Workshop: Participants create a role-permission matrix and configure an alarm workflow for a restricted-area intrusion with documented escalation steps.

Day 3: Video search and incident investigation

  • Recorded-video timeline navigation and event correlation
  • Bookmark creation, naming standards, and incident folders
  • Motion Search parameters, search regions, and result review
  • Appearance Search workflows for locating people and vehicles
  • Camera sequencing, multi-camera reconstruction, and synchronised playback
  • Investigation planning for workplace injuries, spills, and vehicle events
  • Operator notes, investigation logs, and findings documentation

Workshop: Using a staged loading-bay incident, participants locate relevant footage across multiple cameras and produce a timed incident reconstruction with bookmarks and notes.

Day 4: Evidence, retention, and governance

  • Evidence selection, clip boundaries, and relevance testing
  • ACC video export formats, authenticated player exports, and verification
  • Chain-of-custody records and evidence-transfer controls
  • Recording schedules, retention settings, and storage-capacity implications
  • Privacy, access control, and proportionate use of video surveillance
  • Video redaction considerations and disclosure preparation
  • System health indicators, storage alerts, and operational assurance checks

Workshop: Participants export a verified evidence package for a simulated safety investigation and complete an evidence register and chain-of-custody record.

Day 5: Operational implementation and assurance

  • HSE incident workflows for emergency, environmental, and access-control events
  • Shift handover records, open alarms, and investigation continuity
  • Performance measures for alarm response, search time, and evidence quality
  • User-access reviews, retention reviews, and configuration change control

  • Site implementation planning, stakeholder roles, and governance actions

Workshop: Participants complete and present an ACC operating and incident-response workbook for their site, including priorities, alarm logic, evidence controls, and a 90-day implementation plan.

Frequently asked questions

No prior ACC experience is required, but participants should already understand basic CCTV or video-management operations. The course starts with ACC navigation and quickly moves into configuration, search, alarm, and evidence workflows.

A training workstation or access to the live online lab environment is provided for hands-on exercises. You do not need to install ACC on a personal device before attending.

It is best suited to control-room supervisors, security system administrators, corporate security personnel, HSE professionals, and investigators working with ACC-enabled sites. It is not intended as a camera-installation, network-engineering, or cybersecurity certification course.

A general operator course concentrates on monitoring practice and routine camera use. This course specifically develops ACC configuration, role permissions, alarms, Appearance Search, investigation workflows, retention, and authenticated evidence export.

You will be able to build or improve operator layouts, configure alarm responses, investigate recorded video, and prepare evidence packages for actual incidents. The operating workbook provides a structured basis for applying the methods to your site's cameras, procedures, and governance requirements.
