Course overview
Strategic plans often fail after approval because priorities remain broad, departmental measures conflict, and leadership meetings focus on operational activity rather than strategic outcomes. This course addresses that execution gap through the Balanced Scorecard method: translating strategy into a visible set of objectives, measures, targets and initiatives across financial, customer, internal process, and learning and growth perspectives. Participants learn how to make cause-and-effect assumptions explicit and create a management system that connects board-level intent with team-level action.
The course covers the Kaplan and Norton Balanced Scorecard framework, strategy-map design, objective writing, KPI selection, target setting, initiative prioritisation, scorecard cascading and performance-review governance. Participants practise distinguishing outcome measures from driver measures, defining calculation rules and data owners, testing strategic hypotheses, and avoiding overloaded scorecards. They also learn how to use Excel and Power BI to structure scorecard data and present performance in a form that supports management decisions.
Delivery combines instructor-led teaching with worked examples, facilitated critique, group design workshops and a running case study. Each participant develops a practical Balanced Scorecard pack for a selected organisation, business unit or function: a strategic theme statement, one-page strategy map, perspective-based objectives, KPI dictionary, targets, initiative portfolio and review cadence. The final day converts this material into a 90-day implementation plan, giving both the participant and sponsor a defined basis for putting the method into use.
The course is suited to managers and planning professionals responsible for turning strategic priorities into measurable execution. It is particularly valuable where organisations need to align functions, improve accountability for strategic initiatives, or replace fragmented KPI reporting with a coherent performance-management approach.
Course objectives
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Construct a four-perspective Balanced Scorecard aligned to an organisation's strategic priorities
- Draft a cause-and-effect strategy map using strategic themes and linked objectives
- Define outcome and driver KPIs with formulas, owners, data sources and reporting frequency
- Set evidence-based performance targets and traffic-light thresholds for scorecard measures
- Prioritise strategic initiatives using objective linkage, benefits, dependencies and resource criteria
- Cascade an enterprise scorecard into business-unit or functional scorecards without duplicating measures
- Design a monthly and quarterly performance-review cadence with decision rules and escalation routes
- Produce a 90-day Balanced Scorecard implementation plan with governance roles and milestones

Requirements and prerequisites
This is a foundation-to-intermediate course and does not require previous Balanced Scorecard training. Participants should be comfortable reading a business plan, discussing organisational goals and interpreting basic performance measures such as revenue, cost, service level or staff turnover. Familiarity with their organisation's strategy, annual plan or departmental KPIs will make the workshops more useful. Basic spreadsheet confidence is helpful because participants work with sample KPI definitions and scorecard data. No statistical modelling, Power BI experience, finance qualification or specialist strategy software is required. A complete beginner should expect clear instruction in the underlying terminology before applying it.
Training methodology
The five days use short instructor-led explanations followed by structured scorecard-building work. Participants analyse a strategy case, identify strategic themes, draft objectives and test cause-and-effect links on a strategy map. Small groups critique KPI choices, write measure definitions, set targets and compare alternative cascades for business units. Excel and Power BI examples show how scorecard data can be organised and reviewed. Each day adds to an individual application pack, culminating in a facilitated implementation-planning session for the participant's own organisation or function.
