Course overview
Banks face costly pressure when high-performing relationship managers, risk specialists, digital product staff, operations leaders and control-function professionals leave faster than replacements can be developed. Generic engagement surveys and annual appraisal cycles rarely identify the specific retention risks affecting regulated roles, scarce skills, critical branches or succession pipelines. HR and business leaders need a disciplined way to connect workforce data, manager practice, career mobility, pay decisions and performance evidence while maintaining consistency, confidentiality and regulatory awareness.
This course teaches participants to build a banking-focused talent retention and performance management framework. Participants learn to segment the workforce by business criticality and flight risk; analyse turnover, internal mobility, absence, tenure and performance data; conduct stay interviews; define role-based performance measures; calibrate ratings; identify high-potential employees; and create practical retention actions. The programme also covers performance-improvement plans, succession slates, manager accountability, dashboard design and the governance controls needed when handling employee data in a regulated institution.
Instruction combines banking case studies, facilitated design workshops, Excel-based workforce analysis and role-played manager conversations. Participants work with a simulated retail, corporate and operations bank workforce dataset, then test retention interventions against budget, fairness and delivery constraints. Each participant leaves with a Banking Talent Retention and Performance Management Action Plan: a 90-day implementation roadmap containing a critical-role map, retention-risk dashboard specification, calibrated performance process, stay-interview guide, manager measures and reporting cadence. The course is suited to HR practitioners and line leaders who must turn people data and performance discussions into demonstrable workforce outcomes.
Course objectives
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Segment banking roles using criticality, scarcity, performance and flight-risk criteria
- Calculate attrition, regretted-loss, internal-mobility and retention metrics in Excel
- Conduct structured stay interviews and convert findings into documented retention actions
- Design role-based performance scorecards linking individual objectives to bank business and control outcomes
- Facilitate a performance-calibration meeting using evidence standards, rating criteria and bias checks
- Create a targeted performance-improvement plan with milestones, support actions and review controls
- Build a retention-risk dashboard specification using Excel and Power BI measures
- Produce a 90-day banking talent retention and performance management action plan
Benefits of attending
For you
- Gain a repeatable method for diagnosing regretted attrition in critical banking roles
- Build confidence leading evidence-based performance calibration conversations with senior managers
- Create retention proposals supported by workforce metrics rather than anecdotal engagement feedback
- Add practical stay-interview, succession and performance-improvement tools to an HR portfolio
- Demonstrate capability to connect people decisions with client continuity, operational resilience and control outcomes
For your organisation

Target competencies
Who should attend
- HR Business Partners — who must advise banking leaders on attrition, performance and critical-role interventions
- Talent Management Managers — who design succession, high-potential and internal-mobility processes for bank workforces
- Learning and Development Managers — who need to connect capability development with retention and performance evidence
- Retail and Corporate Banking Managers — who lead revenue and relationship teams where turnover damages client continuity
- Operations and Shared Services Managers — who must retain experienced staff while improving service, quality and control performance
- People Analytics Specialists — who translate workforce data into actionable retention and performance reporting
Requirements and prerequisites
Participants should understand basic HR terminology, including employee lifecycle, turnover, performance appraisal, succession and employee confidentiality. Comfort working with spreadsheets is expected: attendees should be able to filter data, use simple formulas and interpret tables in Microsoft Excel. Experience in a bank, credit institution, financial-services operations team or HR function is helpful because cases use regulated roles, branch networks and control functions. No prior experience with SAP SuccessFactors, Power BI, statistical modelling, compensation design or advanced people analytics is required. A complete beginner in talent management can attend, but should expect to work actively with practical HR data and templates.
Training methodology
The programme uses instructor-led briefings to establish banking-specific methods, followed by hands-on work with a simulated workforce dataset covering retail banking, corporate banking, risk and operations. Participants calculate retention measures in Excel, draft Power BI dashboard requirements, run a stay interview, and practise a calibration discussion using documented performance evidence. Small groups assess retention cases involving scarce roles, uneven ratings and succession gaps. Daily outputs feed into an individual end-of-course action plan, which participants refine through peer review and instructor feedback.
