Course overview
Month-end close teams often lose time chasing preparers, copying balances into spreadsheets, investigating aged reconciling items, and proving that reviews occurred on time. BlackLine can standardise these controls, but value depends on how account templates, risk rules, matching logic, workflows, and evidence requirements are configured and operated. This course helps accounting professionals replace fragmented reconciliation practices with a controlled, auditable BlackLine process that supports faster close cycles and clearer ownership of exceptions.
Participants work through the BlackLine account reconciliation lifecycle: setting up account profiles and reconciliation templates, assigning preparers and reviewers, importing balances, documenting support, certifying reconciliations, and managing overdue work. The course also covers Transaction Matching for high-volume matching scenarios, Journal Entries workflow controls, variance analysis, task management, and close-status reporting. Participants learn to distinguish low-risk from high-risk accounts, design useful aging rules, investigate unmatched transactions, and produce evidence that can withstand controller and audit review.
Delivery combines instructor-led demonstrations with guided exercises using realistic month-end close scenarios. Participants configure sample reconciliations, resolve exceptions, route work through review workflows, and analyse close dashboards. The final workshop produces a practical BlackLine reconciliation and close operating blueprint: an account-risk segmentation, sample reconciliation template, matching-rule design, responsibility matrix, and implementation actions for the participant's own finance team. Participants receive a certificate on completion.
The course suits finance and accounting professionals moving from spreadsheet-led reconciliations to BlackLine, as well as existing users who need a more consistent operating model across preparer, reviewer, and close-management activities.
Course objectives
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Configure BlackLine account profiles, reconciliation templates, certification frequencies, and ownership assignments
- Classify balance sheet accounts using risk, materiality, volatility, and reconciliation complexity criteria
- Prepare account reconciliations with balance evidence, supporting documentation, explanatory comments, and sign-off records
- Design Transaction Matching rules for one-to-one, one-to-many, and many-to-many matching scenarios
- Investigate unmatched items using aging analysis, exception queues, root-cause notes, and resolution actions
- Route reconciliations and journal entries through preparer-reviewer approval workflows with appropriate control evidence
- Analyse close performance through BlackLine task status, overdue reconciliations, certification progress, and exception reporting
- Produce a BlackLine close operating blueprint containing templates, risk tiers, workflow roles, and rollout actions
Benefits of attending
For you
- Build evidence-based reconciliation packs that demonstrate preparation, review, and exception resolution
- Gain practical BlackLine configuration vocabulary for account templates, workflows, matching rules, and close tasks
- Improve readiness for financial accountant, R2R analyst, accounting manager, or BlackLine super-user responsibilities
- Learn to identify aged items and control failures before they become audit findings or late-close issues
- Leave with a documented reconciliation and close blueprint that can be discussed credibly with controllers and system teams
For your organisation
- Reduce spreadsheet dependency by standardising reconciliation templates, evidence requirements, and approval workflows
- Improve close predictability through visible task ownership, due dates, escalations, and overdue-work reporting
- Strengthen audit readiness with traceable certifications, supporting documents, reviewer comments, and exception histories
- Focus finance effort on material and high-risk accounts through structured risk-tiering and aging analysis
- Improve transaction-level accuracy by applying repeatable matching rules and documented investigation procedures
Target competencies
Who should attend
- Financial Accountants — who prepare balance sheet reconciliations and need consistent supporting evidence
- Accounting Managers — who oversee close quality, reviewer workloads, and unresolved reconciliation risk
- Financial Controllers — who need reliable certification, audit trails, and close-status visibility
- Record-to-Report Analysts — who support period-end processes, intercompany activities, and balance investigations
- Internal Audit Professionals — who assess reconciliation controls, evidence retention, and segregation of duties
- Finance Systems Analysts — who configure or support BlackLine workflows and finance-system data feeds
Requirements and prerequisites
Participants should understand the purpose of balance sheet reconciliations, period-end close, journal entries, and the preparer-reviewer control model. Experience preparing reconciliations in Excel or another finance system is helpful, as is familiarity with the chart of accounts, trial balance, open items, and common reconciling differences. No prior BlackLine experience is required; the course starts with navigation and core workflow concepts before moving into configuration and exception handling. Participants do not need programming, SQL, API, or system-administration skills. Complete beginners to accounting should first gain basic financial accounting and close-process knowledge.
Training methodology
The instructor demonstrates BlackLine workflows using a realistic corporate close calendar, then participants complete guided exercises as preparers, reviewers, and close managers. Workshops use sample trial-balance data, bank and subledger transactions, aged reconciling items, and journal-supporting documentation. Small-group case discussions focus on account risk, materiality, ownership, and escalation decisions rather than generic software navigation. Each day closes with a practical artefact, and the final session converts these artefacts into an application plan for the participant's own BlackLine or finance transformation environment.

- Account risk assessment using materiality, volatility, and transaction volume
- Account profiles, reconciliation frequencies, due dates, and ownership fields
- Reconciliation template sections for balances, support, comments, and sign-off
- Preparer-reviewer segregation of duties and certification responsibilities
Workshop: Participants build an account-risk register and configure a sample account profile with a reconciliation template, preparer, reviewer, due date, and evidence requirements.
Day 2: Preparing, reviewing, and certifying account reconciliations
- Balance import concepts and source-system data validation
