Course overview
NGO fundraising teams depend on accurate, usable donor data to build relationships, report credible results and make sound decisions about where to invest limited cultivation time. Yet many organisations operate Bloomerang as a basic contact list: duplicate records remain unresolved, gifts are coded inconsistently, communications are not linked to giving history, and reports require manual spreadsheet repair. This course addresses the operational gap between having a donor database and running a governed fundraising information system that supports donor retention, stewardship and leadership reporting.
Participants learn to configure and administer Bloomerang for practical NGO donor management. They work with constituent records, households, relationships, appeals, campaigns, funds, transactions, interaction notes, tasks, custom fields, constituent segments and report filters. The course shows how to establish coding conventions, import and cleanse data, manage recurring donations, track restricted giving, create stewardship workflows, build dashboards and produce reliable fundraising reports. Participants also examine permissions, audit practices, data protection responsibilities and the controls needed to protect sensitive donor information.
Delivery combines instructor demonstrations in Bloomerang with guided configuration labs, NGO fundraising scenarios and peer review of reporting choices. Each participant develops a donor database operating blueprint for their organisation or a supplied NGO case, including a data dictionary, record-quality rules, campaign coding structure, segmentation plan, dashboard specification and a 90-day implementation action plan. This makes the course suitable for staff who need to improve an existing Bloomerang instance rather than merely learn where features are located.
The course is designed for intermediate and advanced fundraising, database and NGO operations professionals who already handle donor records or fundraising reports and now need to standardise processes across teams.
Course objectives
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Configure Bloomerang constituent, household and relationship records to reflect an NGO’s donor ecosystem
- Design a campaign, appeal and fund coding framework that separates unrestricted, restricted and programme-specific income
- Cleanse and import donor records using field mapping, duplicate-review rules and exception logs
- Build saved searches and constituent segments for cultivation, renewal, lapsed-donor and stewardship workflows
- Record gifts, pledges, recurring donations, soft credits and in-kind contributions with consistent transaction controls
- Create interaction, task and acknowledgement workflows that document donor touchpoints and follow-up ownership
- Produce Bloomerang dashboards and filtered reports for retention, campaign performance, donor value and income analysis
- Develop a donor data governance pack containing a data dictionary, access rules, quality checks and implementation plan
Benefits of attending
For you
- Gain the ability to diagnose why donor records and fundraising reports cannot currently be trusted
- Build a portfolio-ready donor database operating blueprint that demonstrates practical Bloomerang administration capability
- Strengthen credibility with fundraising leaders by translating donor-data issues into retention, stewardship and income decisions
- Reduce time spent manually reconciling campaign results by using reusable searches, filters and dashboard views
- Prepare to lead a CRM cleanup, reporting standardisation or donor-data governance initiative within an NGO
For your organisation
- Establishes consistent campaign, appeal and fund coding so income can be reported accurately by purpose and programme
- Reduces duplicate, incomplete and incorrectly merged donor records through repeatable quality-control procedures
- Improves donor follow-up by assigning tasks, recording interactions and creating targeted stewardship segments
- Gives managers faster access to retention, recurring-gift, campaign and portfolio indicators without spreadsheet rework
- Lowers compliance and reputational risk through clearer permissions, documentation and donor-data handling practices
Target competencies
Who should attend
- Fundraising Managers — who need dependable donor pipelines, campaign data and stewardship visibility
- Database Administrators — who configure Bloomerang fields, permissions, imports and record-quality controls
- Development Officers — who manage donor portfolios and need actionable cultivation segments and interaction histories
- NGO Operations Managers — who need consistent income coding and auditable cross-team database processes
- Donor Relations Officers — who coordinate acknowledgements, recognition and retention communications
- Monitoring, Evaluation and Reporting Officers — who turn fundraising data into management and board reporting
Requirements and prerequisites
Participants should have at least six months’ experience using a donor database, CRM or fundraising spreadsheet and understand common NGO fundraising terms such as constituent, gift, pledge, recurring donation, campaign, appeal, fund and restricted income. Familiarity with basic Bloomerang navigation is helpful, and participants should be comfortable working with spreadsheet columns, filters and CSV files in Microsoft Excel. Access to a non-production Bloomerang account is beneficial but not mandatory; a training environment or structured case data can be used. No coding, SQL, API development or advanced data-analysis background is required.
Training methodology
The instructor uses a realistic NGO fundraising dataset to demonstrate each Bloomerang workflow before participants apply it in guided labs. Sessions alternate between configuration tasks, data-cleaning exercises, reporting clinics and short case discussions on restricted income, lapsed donors and stewardship failures. Participants compare coding and segmentation decisions in small groups, then test their choices against management-reporting requirements. Daily exercises build toward an individual donor database operating blueprint, which is reviewed on day five and converted into a prioritised 90-day workplace application plan.
