Course overview

Organisational change plans often focus on new systems, structures, processes and deadlines while underestimating the human transition employees must make. Teams may understand what is changing but still resist, disengage, lose confidence or continue using old ways of working. This course equips change leaders to recognise those reactions as predictable transition dynamics rather than isolated performance problems, and to respond with targeted leadership, communication and support actions.

Participants learn to apply William Bridges’ Transition Model across the three psychological phases: Ending, Losing and Letting Go; the Neutral Zone; and the New Beginning. They identify what employees are losing, map groups at different transition stages, diagnose transition risks, frame communications that acknowledge endings, and create practical interventions for uncertainty, role ambiguity and renewed commitment. The course also examines how Bridges complements project delivery plans, stakeholder analysis, Prosci ADKAR and change communication planning.

Instruction combines facilitated model teaching with workplace cases, transition-diagnostic exercises, communication design workshops and peer critique. Participants work throughout the week on a live or realistic change initiative, such as a technology rollout, operating-model redesign, merger integration or policy change. They leave with a Transition Adoption Plan containing stakeholder transition profiles, phase-specific messages, manager actions, resistance responses, measures and a 90-day adoption roadmap that can be adapted for immediate use.

The course is suited to leaders and practitioners responsible for helping people adopt change, rather than merely managing project tasks. It is particularly valuable where previous change programmes have met implementation milestones but failed to secure sustained employee commitment or consistent new behaviours.

Course objectives

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Explain the distinction between situational change and psychological transition using the Bridges Transition Model
  • Diagnose employee needs across Endings, the Neutral Zone and New Beginnings
  • Create stakeholder transition profiles that identify losses, concerns, readiness and required support
  • Design phase-specific communications that acknowledge endings and build commitment to new beginnings
  • Facilitate manager conversations for employee loss, uncertainty, ambiguity and resistance
  • Build a Transition Adoption Plan aligned to a project milestone and stakeholder communication plan
  • Select adoption indicators and feedback methods to monitor progress through transition phases
  • Integrate Bridges interventions with Prosci ADKAR actions and existing change-management governance

Benefits of attending

For you

  • Gain a recognised practical method for addressing employee resistance beyond project communications and training
  • Produce a portfolio-ready Transition Adoption Plan based on a live or realistic workplace change
  • Strengthen credibility when advising senior leaders on the human risks behind delayed adoption
  • Lead more productive manager conversations about loss, uncertainty, identity and commitment during change
  • Differentiate change-management capability by connecting Bridges transition phases with ADKAR and delivery governance

For your organisation

  • Reduce adoption delays by identifying employee losses and transition barriers before they become operational resistance
  • Give line managers practical scripts and actions for supporting teams through uncertainty and changing roles
  • Improve change communications by matching messages and channels to the employee transition phase
  • Create consistent transition plans that complement project schedules, training plans and stakeholder governance
  • Generate measurable adoption evidence through phase-based feedback loops, readiness indicators and 90-day actions

Who should attend

  • Change Managers — who need a structured human-transition method for improving adoption of organisational change
  • Programme and Project Managers — who must connect delivery milestones with employee readiness and sustained use
  • HR and People Partners — who support employees through restructures, role changes and workforce transformation
  • Operational Leaders — who need to lead teams through uncertainty while maintaining performance and morale
  • Transformation Managers — who coordinate multiple change initiatives and need consistent transition interventions
  • Internal Communications Managers — who must create messages that address employee losses, ambiguity and new commitments

Requirements and prerequisites

This is a foundation-to-intermediate course and does not require prior formal change-management certification. Participants should have basic workplace experience of a planned change, such as a system implementation, restructuring, process redesign or policy rollout, and should be comfortable discussing stakeholders, project milestones and team communications. Familiarity with simple stakeholder maps or communication plans is helpful but not assumed. A laptop with access to Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint or equivalent office tools is recommended for workshop activities. No prior knowledge of the Bridges Transition Model, Prosci ADKAR, psychology qualification or specialist change software is required.

Training methodology

The programme is delivered through instructor-led teaching, facilitated discussion and applied workshops using the Bridges Transition Model. Participants analyse change scenarios, diagnose stakeholder reactions using transition profiles, rehearse manager conversations and redesign weak communications for each transition phase. Small groups compare interventions for restructures, digital implementations and operating-model changes, using feedback from the instructor and peers. Each day develops one section of an individual Transition Adoption Plan; the final day is an application clinic in which participants test their plan against project milestones, likely resistance and adoption measures.

Course outline

Day 1: Foundations of human transition in organisational change

  • Situational change versus psychological transition
  • William Bridges Transition Model and its three phases
  • The business consequences of unmanaged employee transition
  • Individual, team and organisational transition dynamics
  • Change impact analysis versus transition impact analysis
  • Introduction to stakeholder segmentation for transition planning
  • Comparing Bridges Transition Model with Prosci ADKAR

Workshop: Participants analyse a change case and produce an initial transition-impact map showing affected groups, likely losses and adoption risks.

Day 2: Managing endings, loss and letting go

  • Identifying tangible and intangible employee losses
  • Role identity, status, routines and relationship disruption
  • Acknowledgement and respectful ending rituals
  • Stakeholder loss assessment worksheet
  • Leadership messaging for endings and difficult announcements
  • Resistance patterns during the letting-go phase
  • Manager conversation structure for loss and concern

Workshop: Participants create a loss inventory and draft an ending-phase manager communication for a selected stakeholder group.

Day 3: Leading people through the Neutral Zone

  • Characteristics and risks of the Neutral Zone
  • Ambiguity, productivity dips and informal workarounds
  • Temporary structures, short-term goals and feedback loops
  • Psychological safety during uncertain operating conditions
  • Listening channels and employee sentiment collection
  • Neutral Zone communication cadence and content
  • Escalation routes for transition-related performance risks

Workshop: Teams design a 30-day Neutral Zone support plan with manager actions, listening mechanisms, temporary milestones and escalation triggers.

Day 4: Creating credible new beginnings

  • The four Ps of new beginnings: purpose, picture, plan and part
  • Crafting a compelling picture of the future state
  • Clarifying employee roles and contribution to the new way
  • Early wins and reinforcement mechanisms
  • Capability building linked to new behaviours
  • New Beginning communication and recognition plans
  • Aligning Bridges interventions with ADKAR reinforcement actions

Workshop: Participants build a New Beginning activation pack containing a purpose statement, future-state picture, employee contribution map and early-win plan.

Day 5: Transition Adoption Plan implementation and measurement

  • Structuring the Transition Adoption Plan
  • Linking transition actions to project milestones and governance
  • Stakeholder transition heat maps and prioritisation
  • Phase-specific communication and manager action calendars
  • Adoption indicators, pulse checks and qualitative feedback
  • Risk responses for stalled or uneven transition
  • Ninety-day implementation roadmap and accountability

Workshop: Participants present and refine a complete Transition Adoption Plan for their case, receiving peer and instructor feedback before producing a 90-day roadmap.

Bring a laptop with Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint, or compatible office applications, if possible. Templates are designed so participants can build stakeholder profiles, communication plans and adoption measures during the workshops.

Yes. Line managers are central to helping employees navigate endings, uncertainty and new ways of working, and the course includes practical conversation structures and manager action plans. It is especially relevant for managers leading teams through a restructure, system rollout or revised operating model.

Project-management courses focus on delivering scope, schedule, budget and implementation tasks; general change courses may cover several frameworks at a high level. This course concentrates on the employee psychological transition that follows a change event and provides phase-specific actions for adoption.

Yes. Participants are encouraged to bring a live initiative, subject to normal confidentiality requirements, and develop their Transition Adoption Plan around it. The model applies to technology implementations, restructures, mergers, policy changes and process redesigns.

You will leave with a Transition Adoption Plan containing stakeholder transition profiles, loss assessments, phase-specific communications, manager actions, adoption measures and a 90-day roadmap.
