Participants learn how to define healthcare operational metrics, map source data to reporting requirements and build an effective business intelligence workflow. The course covers data modelling, SQL queries, Excel-based validation, Power BI data preparation and dashboard design. Requirements and prerequisites

Training methodology
The five days alternate short instructor-led explanations with guided builds in SQL, Excel and Power BI. Participants work with a de-identified hospital operations dataset containing encounters, appointments, beds, departments and timestamps. Case discussions examine why apparently simple measures such as occupancy and waiting time can be misleading without agreed definitions. Small groups review stakeholder requirements and dashboard mock-ups, then test their own calculations against data-quality exceptions. On the final day, each participant completes an application plan for deploying or improving a dashboard in their own operational setting.

Day 2: Healthcare data foundations and SQL analysis

- HL7 FHIR resource concepts relevant to operational reporting
- SQL SELECT, WHERE, ORDER BY and aggregate functions
- SQL joins across encounter, department, bed and calendar tables
- Timestamp logic for arrival, admission, transfer, discharge and appointment events
- Data-quality profiling for missing identifiers, duplicates and invalid dates
Workshop: Participants write SQL queries to produce a daily department-level extract for admissions, discharges, occupancy and average length of stay.
Day 3: Data modelling and measure design in Power BI
