Course overview
Business analysts are often asked to turn operational data into reports that answer management questions, expose performance gaps and support decisions. The challenge is rarely producing a chart; it is defining the correct metric, tracing it to a reliable source, handling incomplete data, and ensuring that different teams interpret the result consistently. Poorly specified reports create rework, competing versions of the truth and decisions based on misleading totals, averages or trends.
This course equips business analysts to design, build and govern decision-ready business intelligence reporting. Participants translate stakeholder questions into report requirements, define KPIs and metric logic, profile source data, write SQL queries, prepare data models and build interactive Power BI reports. They apply dimensional modelling, DAX measures, drill-through design, exception reporting, row-level security concepts and report validation techniques. The emphasis is on creating reporting products that business users can understand, trust and act on.
Instructor-led demonstrations are followed by practical workshops using a realistic sales, service and operations dataset. Participants work through a reporting brief from discovery to publication: documenting requirements, mapping data fields, creating a star schema, building measures and designing a management dashboard. They leave with a reusable BI reporting pack containing a stakeholder requirements template, KPI catalogue, data-quality checks, report wireframe, Power BI dashboard and validation plan.
The course is suited to experienced business analysts, reporting analysts and data-focused professionals who already work with business processes and data but need stronger technical and design capability for BI reporting initiatives.
Course objectives
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Elicit BI reporting requirements using stakeholder interviews, decision-use cases and report acceptance criteria
- Define KPIs in a metric catalogue with formulas, grain, source fields, owners and refresh rules
- Profile source data to identify completeness, duplication, validity and reconciliation issues
- Write SQL queries using joins, aggregations, filters and common table expressions to prepare reporting datasets
- Design a star schema with fact tables, dimensions, relationships and appropriate reporting grain
- Create DAX measures for variances, time intelligence, ratios and exception thresholds
- Build an interactive Power BI report with drill-through, slicers, tooltips and accessible visual design
- Validate report outputs against source systems and produce a documented BI reporting release checklist
Benefits of attending
For you
- Build evidence of end-to-end BI delivery through a completed dashboard, KPI catalogue and validation pack
- Gain the confidence to challenge ambiguous dashboard requests before development begins
- Apply SQL and DAX techniques to investigate data rather than relying solely on technical teams
- Produce report specifications that developers, data engineers and business sponsors can approve
- Strengthen eligibility for senior business analyst, reporting analyst and BI analyst assignments
For your organisation
- Reduce rework by improving the quality of reporting requirements and metric definitions at project initiation
- Establish more consistent KPIs across departments through documented calculation logic and ownership
- Improve decision reliability by embedding source reconciliation and data-quality checks in report delivery
- Shorten turnaround for management reporting through reusable SQL, data-model and Power BI design patterns
- Lower governance risk by applying controlled access, refresh ownership and report release practices
Target competencies
Who should attend
- Business Analysts — who translate stakeholder needs into measurable reporting and dashboard requirements
- Senior Business Analysts — who lead data-led change initiatives and need to challenge metric definitions
- Reporting Analysts — who need a structured method for building trusted management reports
- Data Analysts — who prepare datasets and want to improve report design and stakeholder alignment
- Product Owners — who prioritise analytics requirements and need to define usable reporting outcomes
- Operations Analysts — who monitor service, process or commercial performance through recurring reports
Requirements and prerequisites
Participants should have practical experience of business analysis, reporting, operational data or spreadsheet-based analysis. They should be comfortable reading tables, interpreting basic measures such as totals, averages and percentages, and discussing business processes with stakeholders. Familiarity with Excel formulas, relational data concepts and existing dashboards is helpful. The course assumes no prior Power BI, DAX or SQL programming expertise; these are taught through guided exercises. It is not a database administration, data engineering or advanced statistics course, and participants do not need prior experience building data warehouses or deploying enterprise BI platforms.
Training methodology
The five-day programme combines short instructor-led briefings with guided builds in Power BI Desktop, SQL Server and Excel. Participants analyse a shared business case, interview simulated stakeholders, convert requests into a KPI catalogue and work with imperfect source extracts. Individual exercises develop SQL, data modelling and DAX capability; small groups critique dashboard wireframes and resolve conflicting metric definitions. Each day closes with a practical artefact review. On day five, participants assemble their reporting pack and create an application plan for a current reporting problem in their own organisation.
Course outline
Day 1: From business question to reporting specification
- Decision-focused reporting versus operational extracts
- Stakeholder interview questions for BI discovery
- Business questions, measures, dimensions and reporting grain
- KPI definition templates and metric ownership
- Report user stories and acceptance criteria
- Dashboard wireframes and information hierarchy
- Data lineage and report governance basics
Workshop: Participants turn a management reporting request into a requirements brief, KPI catalogue and dashboard wireframe.
Day 2: Source data assessment and SQL preparation
- Relational tables, primary keys and foreign keys
- Data profiling for nulls, duplicates and invalid values
- SQL SELECT, WHERE, ORDER BY and calculated columns
- INNER JOIN and LEFT JOIN for business reporting
- GROUP BY, HAVING and aggregate calculations
- Common table expressions for staged reporting logic
- Source-to-report reconciliation techniques
Workshop: Participants query sales and service source tables in SQL Server and produce a reconciled reporting dataset with documented data-quality findings.
Day 3: Data modelling for reliable BI reports
- Fact tables, dimension tables and star schema design
- Defining fact table grain before loading data
- Conformed dimensions and shared business definitions
- Date dimensions and reporting calendar choices
- Power BI Desktop data import and Power Query transformations
