Course overview
Business intelligence teams are often asked to turn disconnected operational data into reports that managers can trust and act on. The challenge is not simply producing charts: it is defining consistent measures, checking data quality, selecting the right reporting grain, and presenting exceptions without hiding the operational context. This course gives participants a practical foundation for moving from business questions and source data to governed dashboards and recurring management reports.
Participants learn the BI reporting lifecycle: eliciting reporting requirements, identifying source systems, shaping tabular data, designing a simple star schema, defining KPIs, and building interactive reports in Power BI. They use Excel and SQL Server data examples to practise data profiling, joins, calculated columns, measures, filters, drill-through, and data visualisation choices. The course also covers metric definitions, refresh considerations, access controls, and report validation so that published outputs are usable beyond a single analyst.
Instruction combines short technical demonstrations with guided build exercises based on a sales and operations reporting case. Each participant develops a working Power BI report pack containing a requirements brief, KPI dictionary, data model, validated measures, dashboard pages, and a reporting governance checklist. They receive instructor feedback on both technical construction and the clarity of the management narrative, then leave with an application plan for improving one report or dashboard in their own team.
The course suits professionals who already work with spreadsheets, operational reports, or business systems and need a structured way to produce reliable BI outputs. It is particularly useful where analysts, managers, and data teams need to agree on what a measure means before decisions are made from it.

- Write DAX measures for totals, ratios, variances, year-to-date values, and filtered calculations
- Design Power BI report pages using suitable visuals, drill-through paths, slicers, and exception-focused layouts
- Validate KPI calculations against source data and document results in a metric dictionary
- Produce a governed BI report pack with refresh, access, ownership, and change-control recommendations

Requirements and prerequisites
Participants should be comfortable using Microsoft Excel to work with tables, sort and filter data, and use basic formulas such as SUM, IF, and XLOOKUP or VLOOKUP. Familiarity with operational reports, KPIs, or a business system such as ERP, CRM, finance, or service management software is helpful. No prior Power BI, SQL, data modelling, or programming experience is required; these are taught from first principles in the course context. Complete beginners to data work should expect a demanding week and should first gain confidence handling rows, columns, dates, and numerical measures in spreadsheets.
Training methodology
The five-day programme uses instructor-led explanation followed immediately by guided work in Power BI Desktop, Excel, and SQL Server sample data. Participants analyse a realistic sales and operations case, map stakeholder questions to measures, transform messy extracts, and build a model and dashboard in stages. Small-group review sessions compare visual choices and challenge KPI definitions. Daily exercises produce components of a final report pack, while the final workshop uses a validation checklist and application plan to connect the course build to each participant’s workplace reporting priorities.

Day 1: BI foundations and reporting requirements

- KPI, metric, target, threshold, and benchmark distinctions
- Reporting grain and the risks of mixed-level data
- Requirements templates for measures, dimensions, filters, and refresh needs

Workshop: Participants create a reporting requirements brief and initial KPI list for a sales and operations management dashboard.
Day 2: Data preparation and modelling
- Data profiling for completeness, validity, uniqueness, and consistency
- Fact tables, dimension tables, surrogate keys, and business keys
- Star schema design for reporting performance and clarity
- Power Query data types, null handling, and error replacement
- Power Query merges, appends, grouping, and conditional columns
- SQL SELECT, WHERE, GROUP BY, and JOIN queries for report extracts
- Relationship cardinality, cross-filter direction, and date tables
Workshop: Participants profile supplied source extracts, transform them in Power Query, and construct a documented star schema.
Day 3: Measures, calculations, and validation
- Calculated columns versus DAX measures
- DAX aggregation functions including SUM, COUNTROWS, DISTINCTCOUNT, and DIVIDE
- Filter context and slicer-aware calculations
- Time intelligence for month-to-date, year-to-date, and prior-period comparisons
- Variance, percentage variance, contribution, and target attainment measures
- Reconciliation methods between source extracts and report totals
- KPI dictionary fields for formula, owner, source, grain, and caveats
Workshop: Participants build and reconcile a set of DAX measures, then record approved definitions in a KPI dictionary.
Day 4: Dashboard design and insight communication
- Visual selection for comparison, trend, composition, distribution, and relationship analysis
- Dashboard page hierarchy and management scanning patterns
- Power BI slicers, visual-level filters, report-level filters, and tooltips
- Drill-through pages and detail-on-demand design
- Exception reporting with thresholds, conditional formatting, and variance indicators
- Accessibility practices for colours, labels, contrast, and alternative text
- Narrative techniques for explaining drivers, risks, and recommended actions
Workshop: Participants build two dashboard pages and conduct a peer review using a management-report usability checklist.
Day 5: Publishing, governance, and workplace application
- Power BI workspace roles and audience access considerations
- Dataset refresh dependencies and refresh-failure checks
- Row-level security concepts and restricted-data reporting
- Report validation scripts and user acceptance testing
- Version control, change requests, and release notes for reports
- Report ownership, review cadence, and metric governance
- BI adoption measures and feedback loops for continuous improvement
Workshop: Participants complete their BI report pack, present its key management insight, and produce a 90-day reporting improvement plan.
