The challenge is not simply producing charts: it is defining consistent measures, checking data quality, selecting the right reporting grain, and presenting exceptions without hiding the operational context. This course gives participants a practical foundation for moving from business questions and source data to governed dashboards and recurring management reports.

Participants learn the BI reporting lifecycle: eliciting reporting requirements, identifying source systems, shaping tabular data, designing a simple star schema, defining KPIs, and building interactive reports in Power BI. They use Excel and SQL Server data examples to practise data profiling, joins, calculated columns, measures, filters, drill-through, and data visualisation choices. The course also covers metric definitions, refresh considerations, access controls, and report validation so that published outputs are usable beyond a single analyst.

Instruction combines short technical demonstrations with guided build exercises based on a sales and operations reporting case. Requirements and prerequisites

Training methodology

The five-day programme uses instructor-led explanation followed immediately by guided work in Power BI Desktop, Excel, and SQL Server sample data. Participants analyse a realistic sales and operations case, map stakeholder questions to measures, transform messy extracts, and build a model and dashboard in stages. Small-group review sessions compare visual choices and challenge KPI definitions. Daily exercises produce components of a final report pack, while the final workshop uses a validation checklist and application plan to connect the course build to each participant’s workplace reporting priorities.

Day 2: Data preparation and modelling

  • Star schema design for reporting performance and clarity
  • Power Query data types, null handling, and error replacement
  • Power Query merges, appends, grouping, and conditional columns
  • SQL SELECT, WHERE, GROUP BY, and JOIN queries for report extracts
  • Relationship cardinality, cross-filter direction, and date tables

Workshop: Participants profile supplied source extracts, transform them in Power Query, and construct a documented star schema.

Day 3: Measures, calculations, and validation

  • DAX aggregation functions including SUM, COUNTROWS, DISTINCTCOUNT, and DIVIDE
  • Filter context and slicer-aware calculations
  • Time intelligence for month-to-date, year-to-date, and prior-period comparisons

  • Reconciliation methods between source extracts and report totals
  • KPI dictionary fields for formula, owner, source, grain, and caveats

Workshop: Participants build and reconcile a set of DAX measures, then record approved definitions in a KPI dictionary.

Day 4: Dashboard design and insight communication

  • Visual selection for comparison, trend, composition, distribution, and relationship analysis
  • Dashboard page hierarchy and management scanning patterns
  • Power BI slicers, visual-level filters, report-level filters, and tooltips
  • Drill-through pages and detail-on-demand design
  • Exception reporting with thresholds, conditional formatting, and variance indicators
  • Accessibility practices for colours, labels, contrast, and alternative text
  • Narrative techniques for explaining drivers, risks, and recommended actions

Workshop: Participants build two dashboard pages and conduct a peer review using a management-report usability checklist.

Day 5: Publishing, governance, and workplace application

  • Dataset refresh dependencies and refresh-failure checks

  • Report validation scripts and user acceptance testing
  • Version control, change requests, and release notes for reports

No prior Power BI or SQL experience is required. You should be comfortable working with Excel tables and basic formulas; SQL and DAX are introduced through practical reporting tasks rather than treated as programming subjects.
