Course overview
Strategic plans often fail because they describe ambition without making explicit how the organisation will create, deliver and capture value. Leaders may have market data, financial targets and operational plans, yet still lack a shared view of customer segments, critical partners, cost drivers, revenue logic and the assumptions connecting them. This course equips participants to use the Business Model Canvas as a disciplined strategic planning tool for testing strategic choices, exposing weak assumptions and aligning cross-functional teams around a viable operating model.
Participants work through all nine Business Model Canvas building blocks: Customer Segments, Value Propositions, Channels, Customer Relationships, Revenue Streams, Key Resources, Key Activities, Key Partnerships and Cost Structure. They learn to define customer jobs, pains and gains; distinguish a value proposition from a product feature list; map revenue and cost logic; identify strategic dependencies; and translate a completed canvas into measurable priorities, initiatives, risks and decision criteria. The course also covers portfolio comparison, scenario-based canvas design and governance for reviewing business-model assumptions.
Delivery combines instructor-led explanation with facilitated canvas critiques, financial logic exercises, strategic case studies and team workshops. Participants build and refine a Business Model Canvas for a live business unit, product, service or strategic initiative, using structured evidence and assumption-testing templates. They leave with a board-ready canvas, an assumptions register, a prioritised validation plan and a 90-day action roadmap that can be used in strategy reviews, investment discussions or transformation planning.
The course is designed for experienced managers and specialists who contribute to strategy formulation, growth planning, innovation, commercial performance or operating-model change. It is particularly valuable where teams need to move from broad strategic statements to a clear, testable model of how the organisation will compete and generate sustainable value.
Course objectives
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Construct a complete nine-block Business Model Canvas for a business unit, product, service or strategic initiative
- Segment customers using evidence-based needs, behaviours, jobs, pains and gains
- Formulate differentiated value propositions linked to specific customer segments and strategic positioning
- Map channels and customer relationships to identify acquisition, delivery, retention and service implications
- Model revenue streams, cost structure and unit-economics assumptions in a strategic business-model view
- Identify key resources, activities and partnerships required to deliver the proposed value proposition
- Prioritise business-model assumptions using an evidence, impact and uncertainty assessment matrix
- Translate a validated canvas into a 90-day strategic action plan with owners, measures and review points
Benefits of attending
For you
- Build credibility in strategy discussions by presenting a coherent, evidence-based business model rather than isolated ideas
- Gain a repeatable visual method for structuring ambiguous growth, innovation and transformation decisions
- Strengthen commercial judgement by linking customer value directly to revenue streams, cost drivers and capability needs
- Produce a practical strategic artefact that can support promotion-level responsibilities in planning, product or business leadership roles
- Lead cross-functional workshops with clearer questions, decision rules and documented assumptions
For your organisation
- Create a shared view of how a strategic initiative generates customer and economic value across functions
- Reduce investment risk by making untested customer, revenue, cost and capability assumptions visible early
- Improve prioritisation of strategic initiatives through explicit links between value propositions, operating requirements and financial logic
- Accelerate strategy communication by using a common one-page framework in leadership reviews and planning sessions
- Establish a reusable method for comparing current-state, future-state and alternative business models
Target competencies
Who should attend
- Strategy Managers — who must turn strategic analysis into an actionable operating and value-creation model
- Business Unit Leaders — who need to align commercial, operational and customer choices around profitable growth
- Product Managers — who must test product-market fit, revenue logic and delivery requirements before investment
- Innovation Managers — who develop new ventures, services or business-model options under uncertainty
- Commercial Directors — who need a structured way to connect customer value, pricing, channels and revenue performance
- Transformation Programme Managers — who must assess how organisational change affects capabilities, partners, costs and customer delivery
Requirements and prerequisites
Participants should have experience contributing to business planning, product planning, commercial planning, service design or operational improvement. They should be comfortable discussing customers, competitors, revenue, costs, internal capabilities and performance measures in their own organisation. Familiarity with basic strategic concepts such as market segmentation, stakeholder analysis, value proposition and financial forecasting is helpful, but formal strategy qualifications are not required. Participants should bring a real business challenge, business unit or initiative to work on where possible. No prior Business Model Canvas certification, design-thinking qualification, specialist modelling software or advanced financial modelling expertise is required.
Training methodology
The programme uses short instructor-led inputs followed by progressive construction of a Business Model Canvas. Participants analyse strategic case evidence, critique completed canvases, map customer and commercial assumptions, and model revenue-cost implications in facilitated teams. Each day applies the method to a realistic business scenario or the participant’s own strategic challenge. Peer review sessions test the clarity and internal consistency of each canvas. The final workshop converts the completed canvas into a prioritised validation backlog, governance rhythm and 90-day implementation plan.
