Course overview
Public relations teams are expected to turn announcements, campaign messages, executive viewpoints and issue updates into visual content that is accurate, on-brand and ready for multiple channels. Yet many communications professionals rely on ad hoc templates, external design support or inconsistent social assets that dilute key messages. This course addresses the practical gap between PR strategy and day-to-day visual production, enabling participants to create credible, audience-appropriate content without compromising brand governance or editorial standards.
Participants learn to use Canva as a controlled production environment for press-office and corporate communications work. They plan visual content around a communications brief, build reusable templates, apply brand kits, select and edit imagery, create accessible social graphics, produce media factsheets, design presentation materials and adapt one message for different formats. The course also covers hierarchy, typography, colour use, image rights, accessibility checks, approval workflows and exporting files correctly for digital, print and stakeholder distribution.
Training is delivered through instructor demonstrations, guided Canva builds, PR case studies and critique sessions based on realistic communications scenarios. Participants work on a campaign or organisational communications brief throughout the week, receiving structured feedback on message clarity, visual consistency and usability. They leave with a completed Canva PR content pack containing branded templates, channel-ready assets, a visual content plan and a practical workflow for review, approval and publishing.
The course suits communications professionals who need to produce high-quality visual assets themselves, as well as teams seeking a more consistent and efficient way to create routine campaign, media and stakeholder communications materials.

Requirements and prerequisites
This is a foundation-to-intermediate course and is suitable for complete beginners in Canva. Participants should be comfortable using a web browser, downloading and uploading files, and working with basic documents or presentations. Familiarity with their organisation's brand guidelines, target audiences and normal communications approval process will help, but prior design training is not required. Participants do not need Adobe Creative Cloud, illustration skills, photography expertise or previous experience of social media design. Bring a laptop and, where permitted, an existing communications brief, logo files, brand guide or sample campaign content to use in exercises.
Training methodology
The programme combines short instructor-led demonstrations with guided Canva production sessions using PR scenarios such as a product announcement, corporate update and issues-response statement. Participants analyse examples, rebuild weak assets, create templates and receive facilitated critique against a defined brief, brand rules and channel requirements. Small-group reviews simulate communications approval meetings, including challenge on message accuracy, visual risk and accessibility. Each day adds assets to an individual content pack, culminating in a practical implementation plan for the participant's own communications workflow.
