Course overview
Transport planners are often held accountable for service failures, premium freight and missed delivery windows without having a consistent method for separating carrier-caused variance from planning, warehouse, customer or data issues. This course equips planners to turn shipment events, tender responses, proof-of-delivery records and freight invoices into an evidence-based carrier performance process. Participants learn how to define fair service measures, challenge unreliable data, identify recurring failure patterns and escalate issues with facts that carriers and internal stakeholders can act on.
The course covers carrier scorecard design, KPI definitions, lane-level analysis, tender acceptance, on-time pickup and delivery, dwell time, claims, capacity compliance, invoice accuracy and corrective-action management. Participants build weighted scorecards, set performance thresholds and tolerances, segment carriers by strategic importance and diagnose variance using Pareto analysis, control charts and root-cause methods. They also practise preparing quarterly business reviews, conducting performance conversations and linking carrier results to sourcing, allocation and network-planning decisions.
Instruction combines transport-planning cases, spreadsheet-based analysis, scorecard workshops and realistic carrier-review simulations. Working from a supplied shipment dataset, participants create a carrier performance management pack containing a KPI dictionary, data-quality checks, lane and carrier scorecards, an exception log, root-cause findings and a corrective-action tracker. This is a practical working template that can be adapted to the participant's own transport management system and carrier portfolio after the course.

Requirements and prerequisites
Participants should have practical experience planning, booking, monitoring or analysing road, parcel, air, ocean or rail transport movements. They should understand common transport terms such as lane, tender, pickup window, delivery window, lead time, proof of delivery, accessorial charge and freight claim. Basic confidence using Microsoft Excel, including filters, pivot tables and simple formulas, is assumed because exercises use shipment-level data. Familiarity with a transport management system or carrier portal is useful but not required. No programming, advanced statistics, Power BI experience or prior supplier-management qualification is required.
Training methodology
The programme alternates focused instructor-led sessions with analysis workshops using a realistic shipment, tender, event and invoice dataset. Participants calculate KPIs in Excel, test data-quality rules, segment failure patterns by carrier and lane, and build scorecard views suitable for operational and executive audiences. Small groups work through a carrier underperformance case, deciding which failures are attributable, what evidence is required and what remedy is proportionate. On the final day, each participant adapts the course templates into a 90-day carrier performance application plan for their own operation.
