Course overview

HR managers and people leaders are often expected to make organisational change work while protecting trust, employee relations and operational continuity. Whether the change involves restructuring, a new HRIS, revised performance management, hybrid-work policies, workforce reductions or a merger, employees judge the change through the quality of leadership communication, manager behaviour and HR processes. This course equips participants to move beyond announcement plans and manage the practical people risks that cause change programmes to stall: unclear sponsorship, inconsistent line-manager messages, capability gaps, resistance, rumour escalation and poorly governed consultation.

Participants learn to diagnose change readiness, segment stakeholders, assess the people impacts of a proposed change and build an HR-led change plan using the Prosci ADKAR Model and Kotter’s change principles. They practise creating sponsor roadmaps, manager briefing packs, communication matrices, training needs analyses, resistance-management interventions and adoption measures. The course addresses sensitive HR responsibilities including employee consultation, change-related policy updates, workforce transition planning, psychological safety, employee listening and the distinction between legitimate challenge and unmanaged resistance.

Delivery combines instructor-led teaching with worked HR transformation cases, role-played manager conversations, peer review and structured planning workshops. Participants apply the methods to a live or realistic workplace change and leave with a practical Change Management Action Plan: a stakeholder map, impact assessment, communications schedule, manager enablement plan, resistance log and adoption dashboard. This course is designed for experienced HR practitioners and leaders who must translate enterprise change into credible, fair and measurable employee action.

Course objectives

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Diagnose organisational change readiness using a structured readiness assessment and evidence from employee listening
  • Map affected stakeholder groups by influence, impact, sentiment and required sponsor engagement
  • Conduct a people impact assessment covering roles, processes, skills, policies, workload and employee relations risks
  • Build an ADKAR-based change plan with actions for awareness, desire, knowledge, ability and reinforcement
  • Create a manager communication pack containing key messages, FAQs, escalation routes and conversation guides
  • Design a resistance-management log that identifies root causes, intervention owners, deadlines and follow-up measures
  • Develop an HR change measurement dashboard using adoption, capability, sentiment and business-performance indicators
  • Present a governed Change Management Action Plan with milestones, accountabilities, risks and decision points

Benefits of attending

For you

  • Build a defensible change-management approach for HR initiatives rather than relying on communications alone
  • Gain confidence facilitating difficult manager and employee conversations about uncertainty, role change and resistance
  • Produce evidence-based recommendations that strengthen credibility with executive sponsors and programme teams
  • Add practical ADKAR, stakeholder mapping and adoption-measurement methods to an HR leadership toolkit
  • Create a reusable portfolio-quality Change Management Action Plan for a current workplace initiative

For your organisation

  • Reduce disruption caused by inconsistent manager messaging and poorly understood employee impacts
  • Improve adoption of new HR systems, operating models, policies and ways of working through structured reinforcement
  • Identify employee relations, capability and workload risks earlier through formal people impact assessments
  • Equip line managers with briefing materials and escalation routes that reduce avoidable HR casework
  • Provide leaders with measurable adoption and sentiment data for timely change decisions and corrective action

Who should attend

  • HR Managers — who lead people-side implementation for restructures, policy changes and HR transformation programmes
  • HR Business Partners — who must align senior sponsors, line managers and employee groups around local change impacts
  • People and Culture Managers — who shape employee experience, communications and adoption during organisational change
  • Learning and Development Managers — who translate changed roles and processes into targeted capability interventions
  • Employee Relations Managers — who manage consultation, workforce risk and sensitive employee responses to change
  • Operational People Leaders — who must lead teams through new structures, systems, ways of working or performance expectations

Requirements and prerequisites

Participants should have practical experience in an HR, people leadership, employee relations, learning or organisational development role, and should be familiar with core HR processes such as performance management, employee communications, policy implementation and manager support. Experience of a recent or planned workplace change is useful because course exercises can be applied to it. Participants should be comfortable using Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint for simple planning and reporting. No prior certification in Prosci, Kotter, project management or organisational psychology is required, and no specialist change-management software experience is assumed.

Training methodology

The five-day programme uses short instructor-led inputs followed by HR-specific application. Participants analyse cases involving HRIS implementation, restructuring and hybrid-work policy change; build stakeholder maps and impact assessments in small groups; and practise sponsor, manager and employee conversations through facilitated role-play. Templates are completed using Excel, PowerPoint and Miro, then tested through peer challenge against employee relations and operational risks. Each day adds a component to an individual Change Management Action Plan, culminating in a final presentation and implementation review.

Frequently asked questions

You should have experience in an HR, people leadership, employee relations or learning role and understand how HR policies and manager communications operate. Prior formal change-management training is not required; the course teaches the ADKAR and Kotter frameworks from practical HR application.

A laptop is strongly recommended for completing the planning templates and dashboard exercises. Participants use Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint and Miro at a practical level; no specialist change-management platform licence is required.

Yes. HRIS implementation is one of the core case contexts because it requires role-based training, manager enablement, communications, adoption measurement and post-launch reinforcement. The same methods also apply to restructures, policy changes and new operating models.

Project management courses focus primarily on scope, schedule, budget and delivery controls. This course focuses on employee adoption: stakeholder impact, sponsor behaviour, manager capability, resistance, employee listening and HR governance.

Yes. Participants are encouraged to bring a current or upcoming change initiative, subject to their organisation’s confidentiality requirements. The templates and workshops are structured so that a live initiative can become the basis for the final action plan.

You leave with a Change Management Action Plan containing a stakeholder map, people impact assessment, communication matrix, manager enablement pack, resistance log and adoption dashboard. These deliverables can be refined with programme sponsors and used immediately in workplace implementation.
