Course overview

Legal teams lose time and create avoidable risk when matter details, client communications, time entries, documents, bills and trust transactions sit in separate spreadsheets, inboxes or ad hoc processes. This five-day Clio Legal Practice Management Software Training Course equips participants to configure and operate Clio as a controlled matter-management environment. It focuses on the daily workflows that affect utilisation, billing accuracy, client service, file visibility and audit readiness across a law firm or in-house legal team.

Participants work through Clio Manage from intake to matter closure: creating contacts and matters, applying practice-area templates, assigning tasks, recording time and expenses, managing documents, producing bills, tracking payments and reporting on work in progress. The course also covers Clio Grow for intake pipelines and forms, Clio Payments for payment collection, and practical QuickBooks Online integration considerations. Participants learn how to establish consistent naming conventions, permissions, matter stages, task lists and reporting fields so that data can be trusted by fee earners, finance staff and firm leaders.

Delivery combines instructor demonstrations with guided work in a Clio training environment and a realistic law-firm case file. Each participant configures a sample practice workflow, builds an intake-to-billing process, and produces a Clio operating blueprint containing matter templates, task workflows, billing rules, dashboard requirements and adoption actions. The completed blueprint gives both the participant and their manager a practical basis for implementing or improving Clio after the course.

The programme suits legal professionals, practice operations staff and finance personnel who need more than basic navigation: they need to make Clio support repeatable, measurable legal-service delivery.

Course objectives

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Configure Clio Manage firm settings, user roles, permissions and matter-numbering conventions
  • Build reusable contact, matter, task and document templates for a defined legal practice area
  • Design a Clio Grow intake pipeline with custom forms, automated communications and conversion stages
  • Record billable time, disbursements and fixed-fee work using consistent activity categories and billing rates
  • Produce draft bills, apply billing workflows and track payment status through Clio Payments
  • Set up matter tasks, calendar rules and document workflows that support file progression and deadlines
  • Generate Clio reports for work in progress, aged receivables, utilisation, matter status and billing performance
  • Create a Clio operating blueprint that maps intake, matter management, billing, reporting and user adoption actions

Benefits of attending

For you

  • Operate Clio Manage confidently across the full lifecycle of a legal matter rather than relying on informal workarounds
  • Build credible evidence of legal-technology capability for practice management, legal operations or senior support roles
  • Reduce rekeying and missed time by using structured matter, activity and task workflows
  • Interpret WIP, debtor, utilisation and matter-status reports when discussing performance with managers
  • Leave with a documented Clio workflow design that can be adapted to the participant’s own practice area

For your organisation

  • Creates more consistent client and matter records through agreed templates, naming rules and required fields
  • Improves time capture and billing completeness by embedding daily activity-entry and invoice-review workflows
  • Reduces operational risk through clearer permissions, task ownership, deadline visibility and document controls
  • Shortens intake-to-matter conversion by using defined Clio Grow stages, forms and communication triggers
  • Gives managers more dependable WIP, aged receivables, workload and matter-progress information for decisions

Who should attend

  • Legal Practice Managers — who need to standardise matter, billing and reporting workflows across the firm
  • Solicitors and Attorneys — who need to manage files, time, tasks and client communications consistently
  • Legal Operations Managers — who are responsible for improving legal-service processes and system adoption
  • Paralegals and Legal Assistants — who administer matters, documents, deadlines and client intake
  • Legal Cashiers and Billing Administrators — who need reliable time, expense, invoicing and payment workflows
  • Law Firm Owners and Department Heads — who require meaningful visibility of workload, WIP, debtors and matter progress

Requirements and prerequisites

This is a foundation-to-intermediate course and does not require prior Clio experience. Participants should be comfortable using a web browser, managing files and folders, entering data into business software, and working with common legal concepts such as client, matter, time entry, disbursement, invoice and deadline. Familiarity with their organisation’s billing arrangements and document-handling practices will help participants apply the exercises. No coding, database administration or accounting qualification is required. Complete beginners should expect to spend the first day learning Clio terminology, navigation and core matter records before progressing to configuration, billing and reporting workflows.

Training methodology

An instructor leads short, feature-specific demonstrations followed by guided configuration in a Clio training environment. Participants work with a realistic firm scenario involving a new enquiry, conflict-aware intake steps, matter opening, document storage, time capture, invoice production and payment follow-up. Small-group reviews compare workflow choices for different practice areas, including permissions, template fields and reporting needs. Daily exercises produce usable configuration artefacts, and the final session converts these into a prioritised implementation and adoption plan for the participant’s own firm or legal team.

Frequently asked questions

No. The course starts with Clio terminology, navigation, contacts and matters before moving into workflows, billing and reporting. Participants with existing Clio access will be able to relate the exercises to their current setup, but prior use is not required.

A laptop is required for live online delivery and strongly recommended for classroom delivery. Training exercises use a dedicated Clio environment or structured demonstration data; participants should not use live client data during the course. Firm-account access is useful for post-course application but is not needed to participate.

It is designed for both groups because successful Clio use depends on shared workflows. Lawyers focus on matters, time, tasks, documents and client service, while operations and finance staff focus on configuration, billing controls, reporting and adoption.

This programme is built around named Clio functions and the decisions required to configure them for legal work. Rather than comparing many platforms at a high level, participants practise the connected intake, matter, billing, payment and reporting workflows inside the Clio ecosystem.

Yes. Participants can use the course to diagnose inconsistent setup, weak time capture, unclear matter stages or limited reporting in an existing deployment. The operating blueprint provides a structured way to prioritise refinements, assign owners and plan user adoption.

You will leave with a Clio operating blueprint covering matter templates, intake stages, task workflows, billing rules, reporting requirements and a 90-day action plan. You will also have completed worked examples of a matter setup, intake flow, invoice workflow and management report pack.
