Course overview
Payroll managers are expected to turn compensation and benefits policy into accurate, timely, auditable pay outcomes. That means reconciling salary structures with payroll master data, administering allowances and deductions correctly, valuing taxable benefits, handling retroactive changes, and explaining variances to finance, HR and employees. Errors in these areas can create overpayments, statutory exposure, employee relations issues and unreliable labour-cost reporting. This course addresses the operational controls payroll leaders need when compensation and benefits decisions move from policy documents into the payroll cycle.
Participants learn to map compensation elements to payroll earning and deduction codes; validate salary, incentive, allowance and benefit data; apply gross-to-net and employer-cost calculations; and manage enrolment, eligibility, arrears and retroactive adjustments. The course covers payroll controls for benefit deductions, taxable benefits, bonus and commission payments, salary changes, benefit vendor reconciliation and payroll accounting interfaces. Participants also learn to use Excel control workbooks, exception reports and approval evidence to investigate discrepancies before payroll is finalised.
Delivery combines instructor-led technical sessions with realistic payroll datasets, policy extracts and reconciliation cases. Each participant builds a Compensation and Benefits Payroll Control Pack containing a pay-element mapping matrix, change-control workflow, reconciliation checklist, exception-report design, payroll calendar and escalation plan. The pack can be adapted to the participant's organisation, payroll platform and local statutory requirements.
The course is designed for experienced payroll professionals who administer, review or control compensation and benefits transactions and need stronger ownership of the HR-to-payroll process.
Course objectives
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Map salary, allowance, incentive and benefit provisions to controlled payroll earning and deduction codes
- Calculate gross-to-net, employer-cost and retroactive-pay impacts for complex compensation changes
- Validate benefit eligibility, enrolment, deduction and arrears data before payroll processing
- Reconcile payroll benefit deductions against HR enrolment records, vendor invoices and general-ledger postings
- Design exception reports that identify duplicate payments, missing deductions, unusual variances and unauthorised changes
- Apply a documented approval and audit-trail method for salary, bonus and benefit-data changes
- Investigate taxable-benefit and payroll variance cases using source-data evidence and control logs
- Produce a Compensation and Benefits Payroll Control Pack for implementation in the workplace

Target competencies
Who should attend
- Payroll Managers — who own payroll accuracy, controls and escalation for compensation and benefit transactions
- Senior Payroll Officers — who review complex pay changes, deductions and payroll exceptions before release
- Payroll Team Leaders — who supervise payroll operations and need repeatable quality-assurance procedures
- Compensation and Benefits Analysts — who must translate reward policy and plan design into payroll-ready data
- HR Operations Managers — who oversee employee-data handoffs, approvals and service delivery to payroll
- Finance and Payroll Control Specialists — who reconcile payroll costs, benefit liabilities and ledger postings
Requirements and prerequisites
Participants should have practical experience processing or reviewing payroll and be comfortable with core concepts including gross pay, statutory deductions, net pay, pay periods, payroll master data and payroll journals. Familiarity with salary changes, allowances, deductions and basic Excel formulas such as IF, SUMIFS and XLOOKUP is expected. Participants should also understand their organisation's payroll calendar and approval process. Prior experience with Workday, SAP SuccessFactors Employee Central Payroll or ADP Workforce Now is useful but not required; exercises use platform-neutral datasets. No programming, compensation-design qualification or advanced financial modelling background is required.
Training methodology
An instructor leads structured sessions using a simulated employee population, compensation policy extracts, payroll registers, vendor invoices and finance reports. Participants work through salary changes, bonus files, benefit enrolments and deduction exceptions in Excel, then compare control decisions in small groups. Case discussions focus on the evidence needed to approve, hold or correct a transaction before payroll close. Each day ends with a practical output that is added to an individual Compensation and Benefits Payroll Control Pack. The final session converts the pack into a workplace implementation plan with owners, timing and measures.
