Course overview
Banking relationship teams are expected to grow profitable client relationships while protecting suitability, conduct, credit and reputational standards. That requires more than product knowledge or a polished pitch. Relationship managers must diagnose a client’s operating model, cash-flow pressures, ownership structure, risk appetite and decision process; connect those findings to an appropriate banking proposition; and progress opportunities through internal credit, product and compliance stakeholders. Weak discovery, inconsistent opportunity qualification and poorly documented client rationale can lead to stalled deals, unsuitable recommendations and unreliable pipeline forecasts.
This five-day course develops a disciplined consultative sales approach for commercial, corporate and private banking relationship teams. Participants practise structured discovery using account research, stakeholder mapping, SPIN questioning and financial-needs analysis; qualify opportunities with MEDDICC-style criteria adapted for banking; build value cases for lending, cash management, trade finance, treasury and wealth propositions; and manage objections without making unsupported claims. The programme also addresses ethical cross-selling, suitability documentation, KYC considerations, referral management and CRM opportunity hygiene.
Teaching combines instructor-led models with realistic banking account cases, role-played client meetings, deal-team simulations and peer review. Participants use a relationship planning template, opportunity scorecard, stakeholder map, call plan and value-case framework to work through a live or anonymised account. They leave with a completed Banking Consultative Sales Playbook for one priority relationship, including a 90-day account action plan, discovery questions, opportunity priorities, internal deal-team actions and measurable next steps.
The course suits experienced client-facing banking professionals who need a more repeatable way to originate, deepen and retain relationships, as well as managers responsible for sales quality, pipeline discipline and conduct-aware growth.

Requirements and prerequisites
Participants should have at least two years of experience in a client-facing banking, treasury, lending, wealth or financial-services sales role. They should understand their bank’s core products, basic credit concepts, KYC requirements and the stages of their existing sales or approval process. Familiarity with a CRM such as Salesforce Financial Services Cloud, Microsoft Dynamics 365 or a comparable internal system is helpful because exercises use opportunity-record fields and account plans. No advanced financial modelling, coding, formal sales qualification certification or prior knowledge of SPIN or MEDDICC is required.
Training methodology
The instructor introduces each method through banking-specific examples, then participants apply it to commercial, corporate or private-bank account scenarios. Exercises include reviewing public account information, preparing SPIN question sequences, mapping client and internal stakeholders, scoring qualified opportunities, and conducting role-play meetings with changing client conditions. Small deal teams build value cases that must withstand challenge from a simulated credit partner, product specialist and compliance reviewer. Daily feedback links observed conversation behaviours to CRM evidence, and the final session converts learning into an account-specific 90-day application plan.
