Sustainability managers are often asked to turn broad CSR commitments into programmes that withstand scrutiny from communities, executives, NGOs, employees and investors. The challenge is not generating worthy ideas; it is selecting issues that are material, defining accountable interventions, controlling budgets and partners, measuring social and environmental outcomes, and reporting results without overstating impact. This course equips participants to manage CSR as a governed portfolio of initiatives linked to business strategy, ESG priorities, local needs and operational risk.

Participants learn to build a CSR programme from needs assessment through closure. They apply stakeholder mapping, materiality inputs, theory of change, project charters, work breakdown structures, partner due diligence, grant controls, risk registers, KPI trees, baselines and outcome measurement. The course also addresses community engagement, human rights considerations, employee volunteering, supplier and NGO partnerships, impact claims, and reporting alignment with GRI Standards, ISO 26000 and AA1000 Stakeholder Engagement Standard principles.

Instruction combines expert-led planning sessions with a running CSR case involving community health, livelihoods and environmental resilience. Participants work in programme teams to prioritise interventions, develop governance arrangements, create an implementation schedule, model a budget, specify indicators and prepare an evidence-based reporting narrative. Each participant leaves with a practical CSR Programme Management Pack: a programme charter, stakeholder map, theory of change, risk register, KPI dashboard specification, partner assessment criteria and a 90-day implementation plan ready to adapt for their organisation.

The course is designed for experienced sustainability, ESG, HSE, community investment and corporate affairs professionals who already contribute to social-impact activity and now need to lead programmes with stronger controls, credible measurement and clear executive accountability.

Requirements and prerequisites

Participants should have practical exposure to CSR, sustainability, ESG, community investment, HSE, corporate affairs or programme delivery, and be comfortable discussing organisational objectives, budgets and stakeholder groups. Familiarity with basic project management concepts such as milestones, responsibilities, risks and KPIs is assumed. Participants should be able to work with simple spreadsheets, preferably Microsoft Excel, to review budgets and indicator tables. Prior knowledge of GRI Standards, ISO 26000, social impact measurement or formal monitoring and evaluation is helpful but not required. No specialist statistics, accounting qualification, audit background or sustainability-reporting certification is required.

Training methodology

The course uses instructor-led briefings to introduce each management method, followed by applied work on a realistic corporate CSR portfolio. Participants analyse stakeholder evidence, build a theory of change, assess partner proposals, cost interventions, and test indicators against reporting claims. Small-group workshops simulate decisions by a sustainability steering committee, including trade-offs between community need, strategic fit, risk and budget. Facilitators provide structured templates and targeted feedback throughout. On the final day, each participant adapts the tools to a live or planned programme and presents a 90-day application plan.
