Course overview
NGOs and development programmes need to reach donors, partners, beneficiaries, advocates and policymakers with limited budgets, sensitive messages and increasing expectations for measurable results. Communications teams are often asked to promote campaigns, recruit event participants, mobilise communities and demonstrate programme impact, yet lack a structured approach to audience segmentation, channel selection, content planning and performance measurement. This course addresses the practical gap between posting on social media and running accountable digital marketing activity that supports programme objectives, fundraising priorities and safeguarding commitments.
Participants learn how to translate a theory of change, campaign brief or fundraising target into a digital marketing plan. The course covers audience personas, stakeholder journeys, value propositions, content pillars, email campaigns, organic and paid social media, Google search advertising, landing-page conversion, web analytics and campaign reporting. Participants practise setting SMART marketing objectives, defining meaningful KPIs, applying UTM parameters, managing consent, and distinguishing useful engagement data from vanity metrics. Examples address humanitarian appeals, advocacy campaigns, community mobilisation, donor stewardship and development programme communications.
Instruction combines facilitator demonstrations, NGO-focused case studies, campaign clinics and guided work in Google Analytics 4, Meta Business Suite, Google Ads and Mailchimp. Participants develop a channel-ready digital campaign plan for a real or simulated NGO initiative, including audience segments, message framework, content calendar, budget assumptions, tracking plan and dashboard specification. This provides an immediately usable document for internal approval, agency briefing or campaign delivery.
The course suits communications, fundraising, programme and advocacy professionals who need to plan or improve digital outreach without becoming full-time marketing specialists. It is equally valuable for managers responsible for approving campaign budgets and requiring clearer evidence of reach, conversion, safeguarding and value for money.

Requirements and prerequisites
This is a foundation-to-intermediate course and does not require prior digital marketing qualifications. Participants should be comfortable using a web browser, spreadsheets and common social media platforms, and should understand their organisation’s basic programmes, audiences and communication priorities. Familiarity with posting on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn or X is helpful but not assumed. Bring a laptop and, where organisational policy permits, access to a current campaign brief, website analytics or social media account data. No coding, graphic design, paid advertising experience, Google Analytics certification or Mailchimp account is required; demonstrations and practice datasets are provided.
Training methodology
The programme uses short instructor-led briefings followed by applied work on NGO and development scenarios, including emergency appeals, advocacy mobilisation and donor retention. Participants analyse sample campaign data in GA4, construct UTM-tagged campaign links, review Meta and Google Ads planning choices, and design an email journey in Mailchimp. Small groups critique messages for relevance, evidence and safeguarding implications. Each day adds a component to an individual campaign plan, culminating in a facilitated review where participants defend channel, budget and measurement decisions.
