Course overview
Warehouse supervisors are expected to keep orders moving while managing labour gaps, late inbound deliveries, slotting constraints, equipment availability, inventory discrepancies and rising service expectations. During a shift, decisions about wave release, dock priorities, replenishment, staffing and exception escalation can directly affect order cut-off performance, overtime, safety and customer satisfaction. This course equips supervisors to lead those decisions using visible operating controls rather than relying on informal workarounds or end-of-shift firefighting.
Participants learn how to run a disciplined warehouse shift from pre-shift planning through handover. The course covers shift-start huddles, workload-to-labour planning, dock and yard coordination, wave and replenishment control, pick-path and slotting analysis, WMS exception management, inventory accuracy checks, escalation routines and performance coaching. Supervisors practise using KPI boards, labour plans, standard work, root-cause analysis and tiered daily management to improve throughput without compromising safety, quality or compliance.
Delivery combines instructor-led demonstrations with warehouse operating scenarios, Excel-based planning exercises, WMS screen simulations and group decision workshops. Participants work with realistic data sets covering delayed receipts, short picks, backlog recovery, labour shortages and dispatch cut-off risk. Each participant leaves with a practical Shift Leadership Playbook: a completed set of huddle templates, KPI definitions, escalation triggers, handover controls and a 30-day improvement plan for their own warehouse area.

Requirements and prerequisites
Participants should have basic experience of warehouse operations, gained through supervisory, team-lead, coordinator or senior operative duties. They should recognise common processes such as receiving, put-away, replenishment, picking, packing, dispatch, cycle counting and shift handover. Familiarity with basic warehouse KPIs and everyday spreadsheet use, including entering data and reading simple tables, is helpful. No prior Lean, Six Sigma, formal management qualification or advanced Excel capability is required. Participants do not need access to a live warehouse management system; demonstrations and exercises use training scenarios. Complete beginners can attend, but should expect to learn core warehouse process terminology before applying the supervisory methods.
Training methodology
The instructor uses a simulated distribution-centre shift to connect each method to operational decisions. Short teaching sessions introduce tools such as the labour plan, tier board, escalation matrix and A3 problem statement; participants then apply them to order, staffing and inventory data. Teams work through inbound delays, pick backlog, missed replenishment and dispatch cut-off cases, making priority decisions and presenting their rationale. Guided peer review tests whether plans are practical for the shop floor. The final session converts course outputs into an individual 30-day application plan for a live work area.

Day 1: Controlling the Warehouse Shift
