Course overview
Supply chain managers are increasingly expected to reduce environmental impacts without interrupting supply, inflating total cost, or weakening supplier relationships. Yet many procurement decisions still rely on price, quality and delivery data alone, while carbon intensity, hazardous-material controls, packaging waste, water use and supplier environmental capability are assessed inconsistently. This creates exposure in tender awards, Scope 3 emissions reporting, customer audits and regulatory due diligence. The course equips managers to convert environmental commitments into defensible sourcing and supplier-management decisions.
Participants learn how to establish environmental procurement requirements, segment spend by environmental risk, build measurable tender criteria and evaluate supplier evidence. The programme covers life-cycle thinking, total cost of ownership, supplier environmental questionnaires, carbon and waste data assessment, ISO 20400 sustainable procurement principles, and supplier improvement planning. Participants practise weighting environmental criteria alongside commercial criteria, identifying greenwashing indicators, developing contract clauses, and using scorecards to monitor environmental performance after award.
Delivery combines instructor-led technical sessions with worked sourcing cases, bid-evaluation workshops and supplier-data exercises. Each participant develops an Environmental Procurement Action Pack for a live or representative category, containing a category risk map, tender evaluation matrix, supplier questionnaire, environmental KPI scorecard and implementation plan. This gives attendees a practical set of documents that can be adapted for their organisation's procurement governance, category plans and supplier review meetings.
The course is designed for supply chain managers responsible for sourcing strategy, supplier performance and operational risk. It is particularly valuable where procurement teams must support net-zero targets, customer sustainability requirements, ISO 14001 environmental management systems or more rigorous supplier due diligence.

Requirements and prerequisites
Participants should have practical experience of purchasing, sourcing, supplier management or category planning, and should understand standard procurement stages such as specification, request for quotation or proposal, bid evaluation, negotiation, contract award and supplier review. Familiarity with Excel or equivalent spreadsheet software is assumed for scoring and simple data analysis. Useful, but not essential, is awareness of carbon reporting, ISO 14001 or supplier sustainability questionnaires. No environmental science qualification, life-cycle assessment software, carbon-accounting platform or prior knowledge of ISO 20400 is required; the course introduces these methods in a procurement context.
Training methodology
The programme uses short instructor-led briefings to establish the procurement and environmental-management methods, followed by category-based application. Participants analyse supplier questionnaires, carbon and waste data extracts, tender submissions and contract examples; then work in groups to score bids, challenge evidence and negotiate improvement actions. Cases cover direct materials, logistics and service procurement. Daily exercises build components of an Environmental Procurement Action Pack, and the final session uses peer review and instructor feedback to turn each participant's work into an implementation plan.

Day 1: Environmental procurement strategy and risk prioritisation

- Environmental aspects and impacts relevant to sourcing decisions

- Stakeholder roles across procurement, HSE, finance, operations and sustainability
Workshop: Participants create an environmental risk and opportunity map for a selected spend category, identifying priority suppliers, impacts and decision points.
Day 2: Environmental requirements in specifications and tenders
- Converting environmental policy commitments into measurable sourcing requirements
- Outcome-based environmental specifications versus prescriptive specifications
- Minimum qualification requirements and supplier eligibility thresholds
- Environmental supplier questionnaires and evidence-request design
- Tender weighting models for price, quality, delivery and environmental performance
- Verification methods for certifications, declarations, test reports and traceability records
- Greenwashing indicators and common weaknesses in supplier submissions

Day 3: Supplier data, carbon evaluation and life-cycle cost
- GHG Protocol Scope 3 categories relevant to purchased goods, services and transport
- Supplier carbon-data collection methods and data-quality assessment
- Activity-based, spend-based and supplier-specific emissions data comparisons
- Environmental data normalisation by unit, volume, distance and functional performance

- Excel scoring logic for supplier environmental and commercial comparisons
Workshop: Participants compare two supplier offers using a carbon-data quality check, total-cost model and weighted bid scorecard.
Day 4: Contracts, supplier development and performance control
