Course overview
Executives are routinely required to make high-consequence decisions with incomplete information, competing stakeholder demands, compressed timelines and material financial, operational or reputational exposure. A poorly framed investment decision, escalation choice, restructuring proposal or strategic priority can consume resources for years. This course gives senior leaders a disciplined way to distinguish urgent issues from important ones, test assumptions before commitment and explain the rationale for decisions that affect boards, employees, customers and shareholders.
Participants learn a practical executive decision system combining decision framing, stakeholder analysis, scenario planning, risk-adjusted option evaluation and implementation governance. They use decision matrices, weighted criteria, sensitivity analysis, premortems, red-team challenge sessions and escalation thresholds to assess complex choices. The course also addresses cognitive bias in executive teams, decision rights, board-level communication and how to make decisions when data is uncertain, disputed or delayed.
Teaching is instructor-led and built around realistic executive cases involving capital allocation, market entry, crisis response and organisational change. Participants work with decision briefs, risk registers, scenario models and executive dashboards, receiving structured feedback on the quality of their reasoning and communication. Each participant leaves with an Executive Decision Playbook: a completed, workplace-relevant decision brief containing options, evaluation criteria, stakeholder risks, recommended action, governance gates and a 90-day implementation plan. A certificate is awarded on completion.
The course is best suited to executives and senior leaders who already manage significant budgets, teams, portfolios or strategic initiatives and need a repeatable method for making and defending consequential decisions.
Course objectives
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Frame ambiguous strategic issues using a decision statement, scope boundaries and measurable decision criteria
- Construct a weighted decision matrix to compare strategic options against financial, operational and stakeholder criteria
- Apply scenario planning and sensitivity analysis to test recommendations under changing assumptions
- Identify cognitive biases and use premortem and red-team methods to challenge executive assumptions
- Develop a risk-adjusted recommendation using an ISO 31000-aligned risk register and response thresholds
- Define decision rights, escalation routes and accountability using a RACI decision-governance model
- Present a board-ready decision brief that states options, evidence, trade-offs, recommendation and required approvals
- Produce an Executive Decision Playbook and 90-day implementation plan for a live organisational decision
Benefits of attending
For you
- Build a defensible method for presenting recommendations when evidence is incomplete or contested
- Strengthen board and executive-committee credibility through clearer options, trade-offs and decision rationale
- Improve judgement under pressure by recognising bias, escalation traps and false certainty in senior-team discussions
- Create a reusable Executive Decision Playbook for a current strategic or operational decision
- Demonstrate readiness for broader enterprise responsibility through disciplined decision governance and risk communication
For your organisation
- Improve the consistency and auditability of major investment, transformation and operating decisions
- Reduce avoidable decision risk by requiring explicit assumptions, scenarios, premortems and risk thresholds
- Shorten executive decision cycles through clearer decision rights, approval gates and escalation routes
- Increase alignment across finance, operations, strategy and commercial leaders on evaluation criteria and trade-offs
- Produce stronger implementation plans that connect approved decisions to owners, milestones, metrics and review points
Target competencies
Who should attend
- Chief Executives and Managing Directors — who must make and justify enterprise-level strategic choices
- Executive Directors — who balance competing portfolio, investment and performance priorities
- Business Unit Presidents and General Managers — who allocate resources across markets, products and operating teams
- Chief Operating Officers — who make cross-functional decisions affecting delivery, resilience and cost
- Chief Financial Officers and Finance Directors — who evaluate capital allocation, risk exposure and investment cases
- Senior Transformation and Strategy Leaders — who need to secure decisions and govern complex change initiatives
Requirements and prerequisites
Participants should have experience contributing to, recommending or approving business decisions with budget, people, operational or strategic implications. Familiarity with basic financial measures such as revenue, cost, margin, return on investment and cash flow is assumed, as is the ability to interpret a simple spreadsheet and management report. Participants should bring one current or upcoming decision challenge where possible. Prior study of leadership theory, statistics, formal risk management or Power BI is not required. The course teaches the decision tools used, including weighted scoring, scenarios, risk registers and decision briefs.
Training methodology
The five-day programme combines concise instructor-led briefings with executive-level cases, facilitated challenge discussions and practical decision workshops. Participants analyse capital allocation, crisis and transformation scenarios using weighted decision matrices, risk registers, premortems and sensitivity models in Microsoft Excel and Power BI. Small groups take rotating roles as executive sponsor, finance lead, operational lead and red team, then defend recommendations under scrutiny. Each day develops one section of a live decision brief, culminating in an individual application plan and peer-reviewed Executive Decision Playbook.
