Course overview
Financial product managers must make decisions where a familiar product trade-off can also create a regulatory breach, reconciliation failure, fraud exposure, or material loss. A payments feature may depend on ISO 20022 message fields, card-network rules, PCI DSS controls, settlement timing, and exception handling before it reaches a customer. This course helps product managers turn those constraints into clear product requirements, viable operating models, and measurable releases rather than treating compliance, risk, and technology teams as late-stage reviewers.
Participants examine the operating mechanics of payments, digital wallets, lending, open banking, embedded finance, and financial data products. They learn to map money movement and data flows; define ledgers, balances, transaction states, and reconciliation rules; write risk-aware product requirements; prioritise a fintech roadmap; and select metrics for activation, authorisation, loss, liquidity, service reliability, and regulatory control. The course also addresses KYC, AML, fraud controls, consent management, PCI DSS, ISO 20022, and the practical implications of working with banks, processors, fintech partners, and regulators.
Delivery combines instructor-led decision frameworks with product teardown cases, transaction-flow workshops, Jira backlog exercises, Postman API inspection, and stakeholder simulations. Participants work throughout the week on a fintech product case relevant to their market and leave with a product brief containing a money-and-data flow map, control requirements, prioritised backlog, metric tree, launch-readiness checklist, and 90-day delivery plan. This gives both the attendee and their manager an artefact that can be adapted to an active initiative.

Requirements and prerequisites
Participants should have practical product management experience, including writing user stories or product requirements, maintaining a backlog, prioritising work, and collaborating with engineering and business stakeholders. Familiarity with Agile delivery, basic API concepts such as requests and responses, and common metrics such as conversion and retention is assumed. Prior fintech experience is useful but not mandatory; the course introduces core payment, ledger, compliance, and risk concepts from a product-management perspective. Participants do not need to code, build a payment gateway, perform accounting entries, or hold legal or compliance qualifications. A laptop capable of accessing browser-based collaboration tools is required.
Training methodology
The five-day programme uses short instructor-led modules to establish financial-product concepts, followed by applied work on a running fintech case. Participants map transaction and data flows, inspect example API calls in Postman, convert regulatory and operational constraints into Jira backlog items, and test decisions through payment-failure, fraud, and reconciliation scenarios. Small groups present trade-offs to a simulated product, risk, and operations review panel. Each day adds a section to an individual product brief, culminating in a peer-reviewed 90-day implementation plan.

Day 1: Fintech product foundations and financial operating models
- Fintech value chains: issuers, acquirers, banks, processors, networks, and fintech platforms
- Money movement lifecycle from customer initiation to authorisation, clearing, settlement, and reconciliation
- Data movement, customer consent, and financial-data responsibilities
- Product models for payments, wallets, accounts, lending, and embedded finance
- Double-entry ledger concepts, available balance, posted balance, and transaction states
- Unit economics for transaction products: interchange, fees, losses, reserves, and servicing costs
- Stakeholder mapping across product, engineering, compliance, risk, finance, operations, and partners
Workshop: Participants map the customer journey, money flow, data flow, and operating stakeholders for a selected wallet or payment product.
Day 2: Regulation, risk, and control design for product managers
- KYC and customer due-diligence requirements in digital onboarding
- AML transaction monitoring, sanctions screening, and suspicious-activity escalation
- PCI DSS scope, tokenisation, card-data handling, and third-party responsibilities
- Fraud-control patterns: velocity rules, step-up authentication, device signals, and manual review
- Open banking consent, data minimisation, access revocation, and audit trails
- Translating legal and risk obligations into product requirements and acceptance criteria
- Control ownership, evidence collection, exception handling, and audit-ready product documentation
Workshop: Participants convert a digital-onboarding risk assessment into user stories, control acceptance criteria, and an exception-handling workflow.
Day 3: Building fintech platforms, APIs, and delivery backlogs
- API product design: resources, authentication, versioning, rate limits, and developer documentation
- ISO 20022 message concepts and their effect on payment-product data models
- Webhook events, asynchronous transaction states, retries, and idempotency
- Error taxonomy for declined, reversed, pending, failed, and disputed transactions
- Integration dependencies with processors, banks, identity providers, and fraud vendors
- Jira backlog structuring for regulatory requirements, technical enablers, and customer features
- Definition of done for financial products, including controls, observability, and operational handover
Workshop: Participants inspect sample payment API requests in Postman and create a Jira epic with user stories, error cases, and acceptance criteria.
Day 4: Roadmaps, metrics, and financial-product decisions
- Fintech discovery methods for validating trust, willingness to pay, and customer risk tolerance
- Prioritisation using value, regulatory urgency, loss exposure, operational effort, and partner dependency
- Metric trees for acquisition, activation, authorisation, payment success, retention, and revenue
- Risk and operations metrics: fraud loss, false positives, chargebacks, settlement breaks, and complaint rates
- Experiment design in regulated journeys, including guardrails and control monitoring
- Service-level objectives, incident metrics, and customer-impact thresholds
- Product business cases incorporating transaction economics, reserve assumptions, and operational costs
Workshop: Participants prioritise a constrained fintech roadmap and defend their choices using a metric tree, risk score, and dependency map.
Day 5: Launch governance and the 90-day fintech product plan
- Launch-readiness gates for product, compliance, fraud, operations, customer support, and treasury
- Reconciliation design, break management, and financial close dependencies
- Pilot design, rollout cohorts, transaction limits, and feature flags
- Incident response for payment failures, data incidents, fraud spikes, and partner outages
- Vendor and partner governance: service levels, escalation paths, reporting, and change control
- Executive communication of product risk, residual risk, and launch trade-offs
- Ninety-day planning with milestones, owners, backlog sequencing, and measurable outcomes
Workshop: Participants present a completed fintech product brief and 90-day delivery plan to a simulated launch-governance panel.
