Course overview

Workplace HSE performance depends on more than policies posted on noticeboards. Supervisors, coordinators and managers must identify hazards before work starts, assess environmental aspects alongside safety risks, apply legal and company controls, investigate events properly, and show that corrective actions are closed. When these activities are inconsistent, organisations face repeat incidents, failed inspections, uncontrolled contractor exposure, pollution events and weak evidence of compliance.

This five-day course establishes a practical HSE management foundation aligned with ISO 45001 and ISO 14001 principles. Participants learn to build a hazard and aspect register, use risk matrices, select controls through the hierarchy of controls, prepare task risk assessments, conduct workplace inspections, report and investigate incidents, manage corrective actions, monitor leading and lagging indicators, and support emergency preparedness. The course also connects day-to-day controls with management-system requirements, including consultation, competence, documented information, internal audit and management review.

Instructor-led explanations are paired with realistic workplace scenarios from operational, construction, facilities and service environments. Participants work in groups to inspect a case-study work area, analyse an incident, construct a Bowtie diagram, draft an environmental aspect assessment and test an audit checklist. Each participant leaves with an HSE Workplace Compliance Action Pack: a risk assessment, inspection checklist, incident investigation record, corrective-action tracker, selected HSE KPIs and a 90-day implementation plan that can be adapted for their own site or department.

The course is suited to professionals with some workplace responsibility who need a structured method for managing HSE obligations, rather than specialist technical training in occupational hygiene, process safety engineering or environmental permitting.

Requirements and prerequisites

Participants should have basic familiarity with their workplace operations, common hazards and internal reporting routes, and should be able to read procedures, complete forms and use a spreadsheet at a simple level. Prior exposure to safety inductions, toolbox talks, inspections or incident reports is useful but not essential. This is a fundamentals course designed for professionals with workplace responsibility, including those newly appointed to an HSE-related role. No prior ISO auditor qualification, environmental science background, legal qualification, BowtieXP licence or specialist engineering knowledge is required.

Training methodology

The course combines instructor-led teaching with guided application to a continuing workplace case study. Participants interpret ISO 45001 and ISO 14001 requirements, practise risk ranking in small groups, inspect a simulated work area, analyse incident evidence, and use Microsoft Excel to track actions and indicators. Facilitated discussions compare control choices across different operations and contractor arrangements. Each day closes with a practical output, and the final session converts these outputs into an individual 90-day HSE compliance implementation plan.

Day 1: HSE management foundations and compliance duties

• HSE management roles, responsibilities and accountability lines

Workshop: Participants map HSE responsibilities and create a draft legal and other requirements register for a case-study workplace.

Day 2: Hazard, risk and environmental aspect control

• Hazard identification through task observation and job-step analysis
• Environmental aspect and impact identification across normal and abnormal conditions
• Likelihood-consequence risk matrices and risk-rating limitations
• Hierarchy of controls and residual-risk evaluation
• Task risk assessments for routine and non-routine work
• Contractor and visitor risk interfaces
• Bowtie analysis for critical hazards and preventive barriers

Workshop: Participants complete a hazard and aspect register, task risk assessment and Bowtie diagram for a maintenance activity.

Day 3: Operational controls, inspections and emergency readiness

• Safe systems of work and operational-control planning
• Permit-to-work interfaces for high-risk activities
• Workplace inspection planning, sampling and observation techniques
• Inspection checklist design and evidence capture
• Nonconformity classification and immediate containment actions
• Emergency preparedness scenarios and response-plan testing

Workshop: Participants conduct a simulated workplace inspection and produce a prioritised finding and corrective-action report.

Day 4: Incident investigation and corrective action

• Incident, near-miss and environmental-event reporting thresholds
