Course overview
Distribution networks lose time and accuracy when product identifiers change between suppliers, warehouses, carriers and customers. A warehouse may receive a supplier barcode that cannot be matched to its item master, ship a case with the wrong GS1-128 application identifier, or investigate a recall using shipment records that do not link lots, serial numbers and locations. These failures create receiving exceptions, chargebacks, inventory disputes, delayed recalls and weak evidence for customers or regulators. This course gives supply chain professionals a practical method for designing and operating traceable distribution processes using GS1 Standards.
Participants learn how GTINs, GLNs, SSCCs, GS1-128 barcodes, DataMatrix symbols, application identifiers and EPCIS event data work together across inbound, storage, picking, dispatch and returns. They interpret barcode content, assign and validate logistics identifiers, create SSCC-based pallet labels, and map critical tracking events to business processes. The course also addresses master-data governance, label quality, scanner configuration, supplier onboarding and exception management, so participants can distinguish a barcode-printing problem from an identification, data-quality or process-control failure.
Instruction combines worked standards examples, label-reading exercises, distribution case studies and facilitated design workshops. Participants use a realistic multi-site distribution scenario to develop a GS1 traceability blueprint: identifier rules, event-capture requirements, barcode-label specifications, data ownership roles, exception procedures and implementation priorities. They leave with a structured action plan that can be adapted for a warehouse, supplier network, 3PL operation or customer compliance programme.
The course is suited to professionals who already work with inventory, warehousing, logistics systems or product data and need to make identification and traceability controls operational rather than theoretical.

Requirements and prerequisites
Participants should have working experience of warehouse, distribution, inventory-control, transport or supply chain data processes. They should understand basic concepts such as purchase orders, goods receipt, stock movements, picking, dispatch, SKU or item master records, and batch or lot numbers. Familiarity with a WMS, ERP or barcode-scanning workflow is useful because exercises refer to system transactions and operational exceptions. No prior GS1 membership, barcode-design experience, programming skill, EPCIS implementation experience or specialist label-printing software is required. Participants do not need to bring production data; training examples and templates are provided.
Training methodology
The instructor uses short standards briefings followed by applied distribution exercises. Participants decode GS1-128 examples, compare label layouts against GS1 General Specifications, map warehouse transactions to EPCIS 2.0 events, and investigate a simulated lot-trace and recall case. Small groups develop requirements for a supplier-to-distribution-centre flow, then test them against common exceptions such as relabelling, mixed pallets and returned stock. The final session converts workshop outputs into an individual implementation blueprint with owners, evidence requirements, dependencies and first actions.
Course outline
Day 1: GS1 identification foundations for distribution
- GS1 system architecture across product, party, location and logistics-unit identification
- GTIN allocation rules for trade items, packaging levels and variable-measure products
- GLN use for legal entities, functional locations and physical warehouse locations
- SSCC structure and serialisation rules for pallets and other logistics units
- GS1 key relationships within purchase order, ASN, receipt and dispatch processes
- GS1 General Specifications as the governing source for barcode and data-carrier rules
- Identifier governance, ownership and change-control responsibilities
Workshop: Participants analyse a distribution data set and produce an identifier map showing the correct GTIN, GLN and SSCC use at each process hand-off.
Day 2: Barcode data carriers and logistics labels
- GS1-128 symbol structure, FNC1 use and concatenated element strings
- Application Identifiers for batch, expiry date, serial number, quantity and SSCC
- GS1 DataMatrix selection for item-level identification and constrained label space
- Logistics label zones, human-readable interpretation and mandatory data placement

Workshop: Participants decode sample barcodes and create a GS1-128 pallet-label specification for a batch-controlled outbound shipment.
Day 3: Traceability event capture with EPCIS

Workshop: Participants map a receiving-to-dispatch warehouse flow into an EPCIS event model and produce a Critical Tracking Event and Key Data Element register.
Day 4: Operational controls, data governance and partner compliance
- Master-data alignment between supplier, WMS, ERP, TMS and customer systems
- Advance Ship Notice data and SSCC reconciliation at goods receipt
- Supplier barcode-label requirements and conformance-testing procedures
- 3PL operating agreements for scanning, relabelling, storage and dispatch evidence
- Exception workflows for unreadable labels, unknown GTINs, mixed lots and duplicate SSCCs
- Returns, reverse logistics and product-status traceability controls
- Audit trails, retention rules and recall-response evidence packs
Workshop: Participants conduct a supplier-and-3PL compliance review using a checklist and produce a corrective-action log for identified traceability gaps.
Day 5: Implementation planning and traceability assurance

- Requirements writing for WMS, label-management and integration changes
- Traceability test scripts for lot tracing, SSCC genealogy and shipment verification

- Performance indicators for scan compliance, data accuracy and traceability response time
Workshop: Participants complete and present a GS1 traceability implementation blueprint containing process controls, data requirements, tests, accountable owners and a 90-day action plan.
