Course overview
Healthcare organisations can approve a clinically sound change and still fail to achieve adoption at the point of care. New EHR workflows, medication-safety processes, digital health tools, care pathways and operating models affect clinicians’ time, autonomy, patient interactions and professional judgement. This course addresses the practical leadership challenge of moving from a signed-off programme plan to consistent, safe use by nurses, physicians, allied health professionals, administrative teams and patients. Participants learn to identify adoption barriers early, engage influential clinical stakeholders and protect care quality throughout implementation.
The course covers healthcare-specific change impact assessment, stakeholder mapping, clinical sponsorship, readiness diagnostics, resistance analysis, workflow-based communications, role-based training and adoption measurement. Participants practise applying the Prosci ADKAR model and Kotter’s 8-Step Process to clinical environments, where evidence, governance, workload pressures and patient safety all shape behaviour. They develop skills in segmenting stakeholders, designing a clinical champion network, translating programme messages into role-specific actions, managing go-live risks and using leading indicators to distinguish genuine adoption from nominal compliance.
Instruction combines facilitated teaching with hospital, primary care and digital-health cases. Teams work through a realistic clinical implementation scenario, test decisions against competing stakeholder needs and build a structured adoption plan. Each participant leaves with a healthcare change and clinical adoption playbook for a live or planned initiative, including a stakeholder map, impact assessment, communications plan, training approach, resistance log, adoption dashboard and 90-day action plan.
The course is designed for professionals who already contribute to improvement, transformation, digital, operational or clinical programmes and now need a disciplined method for leading the people side of change in care settings.
Course objectives
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Conduct a clinical change impact assessment across care roles, workflows, systems and patient-safety controls
- Map stakeholders using influence, impact and readiness criteria to prioritise engagement activity
- Apply the Prosci ADKAR model to diagnose individual adoption barriers among clinical and non-clinical staff
- Build a clinical sponsor and champion network with defined responsibilities, escalation routes and feedback loops
- Design role-based communications and training plans linked to changed workflows and competency requirements
- Create a resistance-management log that records concerns, owners, mitigations and escalation thresholds
- Define adoption measures using leading and lagging indicators, audit data, usage data and staff feedback
- Produce a 90-day clinical adoption plan for a healthcare change initiative
Benefits of attending
For you
- Gain a repeatable method for leading clinician adoption beyond project go-live
- Build credible change plans that account for patient safety, clinical workload and professional autonomy
- Strengthen conversations with senior clinicians by using structured readiness, impact and resistance evidence
- Create portfolio-ready healthcare change artefacts, including an adoption dashboard and 90-day plan
- Position yourself for transformation, clinical informatics, programme leadership or service-improvement responsibilities
For your organisation
- Reduce avoidable workflow disruption by identifying affected roles and process changes before go-live
- Improve clinician uptake of new systems, pathways and operating procedures through targeted engagement
- Surface resistance and patient-safety risks earlier through structured feedback and escalation mechanisms
- Provide programme boards with measurable adoption evidence rather than relying on training attendance alone
- Create reusable templates for change impact, champion networks, communications and adoption reporting
Target competencies
Who should attend
- Clinical Transformation Leads — who must secure adoption of redesigned care pathways and service models
- Healthcare Programme Managers — who need to integrate change activity with implementation milestones and governance
- Digital Health and EHR Implementation Managers — who must convert technical deployment into safe, sustained clinician use
- Clinical Informatics Professionals — who translate system configuration changes into workable clinical practice
- Nurse Managers and Allied Health Leaders — who lead teams through workflow, documentation and practice changes
- Quality Improvement and Patient Safety Professionals — who need adoption methods that protect compliance and care outcomes
Requirements and prerequisites
Participants should have experience working in a healthcare provider, payer, public-health, life-sciences or digital-health setting and understand the basics of how clinical services are organised. Familiarity with a current or recent change initiative—such as an EHR rollout, pathway redesign, policy implementation or service transformation—is strongly recommended. Participants should be comfortable discussing workflows, stakeholder groups, project milestones and patient-safety considerations. No formal change-management qualification, clinical licence, data-analysis background or specialist software expertise is required. A laptop with spreadsheet and presentation software is useful for exercises, but templates are provided.
Training methodology
An experienced healthcare transformation instructor leads short, focused sessions followed by applied workshops. Participants analyse clinical workflow changes, complete stakeholder and readiness assessments, and work in groups on cases involving EHR deployment, pathway redesign and new safety procedures. Role-play is used to practise conversations with clinical sponsors and resistant stakeholders. Teams build communications, training and measurement plans using supplied templates, then test them through peer challenge. The final session converts learning into an individual 90-day application plan for a current healthcare initiative.
Course outline
Day 1: The healthcare adoption challenge
- Why clinically valid changes fail at the point of care
- Distinguishing implementation completion from sustained adoption
- Patient safety, workload and professional autonomy as change factors
- The Prosci ADKAR model in clinical settings
- Kotter’s 8-Step Process for healthcare transformation
- Clinical governance and operational governance interfaces
- Defining adoption outcomes for EHR, pathway and service changes
Workshop: Participants analyse a clinical documentation change case and produce an initial adoption problem statement with measurable success criteria.
Day 2: Assessing impact and readiness
- Clinical workflow mapping across patient journeys
- Role-based change impact assessment
- Stakeholder mapping by influence, impact and attitude
- Readiness assessment design and evidence sources
- Identifying informal clinical influencers and opinion leaders
- Equity, accessibility and digital-literacy considerations
- Change heat maps and prioritisation matrices
Workshop: Participants create a stakeholder map, role-impact matrix and readiness heat map for a selected healthcare implementation.
Day 3: Engaging clinicians and managing resistance
- Clinical sponsorship roles and visible leadership behaviours
- Designing a clinical champion network
- Resistance categories in healthcare change
- Listening sessions, rounding and structured feedback loops
- Communications architecture for different clinical audiences
- Message framing using safety, evidence and workflow benefits
- Resistance logs, escalation routes and decision ownership
Workshop: Teams design a clinical champion model and conduct a role-play response to a consultant-led resistance scenario.
Day 4: Training, go-live and reinforcement
- Role-based learning needs analysis
- Workflow simulation and scenario-based clinical training
- Super-user, floor-walker and elbow-support models
- Go-live command-centre change activities
- Hypercare feedback capture and rapid issue triage
- Reinforcement through audit, coaching and performance conversations
- Aligning adoption support with incident and safety reporting
Workshop: Participants build a role-based training and hypercare plan for a new clinical workflow, including support coverage and escalation triggers.
Day 5: Measuring adoption and leading the plan
- Leading and lagging indicators of clinical adoption
- Combining system usage, audit, observation and staff-feedback data
- Adoption dashboards for programme and clinical governance boards
