Course overview
Clinical service delivery projects must improve access, safety, flow or capacity without disrupting care. Whether the initiative involves opening an ambulatory clinic, redesigning a patient pathway, implementing a new referral process or reducing theatre turnaround time, project leaders must coordinate clinicians, operations teams, digital services, finance and external suppliers around decisions that affect patients directly. This course addresses the practical challenge of delivering those changes with realistic plans, clear clinical governance, measurable benefits and controlled operational risk.
Participants learn to structure healthcare projects from mandate to handover using a clinical service delivery lifecycle. The course covers scope definition, patient-pathway mapping, work breakdown structures, critical-path scheduling, resource and capacity planning, RAID logs, clinical stakeholder analysis, benefit realisation and change control. Participants practise translating service objectives such as reduced waiting times, improved utilisation or safer handovers into measurable project requirements, milestones, operational readiness criteria and performance indicators.
Teaching combines instructor-led explanation with a running case based on a clinical service redesign programme. Teams use project controls, risk methods and service-performance data to build a delivery plan, resolve competing stakeholder priorities and prepare for implementation. Each participant leaves with a completed clinical service delivery project pack: charter, stakeholder map, patient-pathway baseline, schedule, RAID log, benefit map, governance plan and 90-day implementation roadmap that can be adapted for their own organisation.
The programme is designed for experienced healthcare professionals and project practitioners who already work across clinical and operational teams and need stronger methods for managing service change in regulated care environments.

Requirements and prerequisites
Participants should have experience working in a healthcare provider, commissioning, clinical operations or service-improvement setting and should understand basic project terms such as scope, milestones, stakeholders, risks and actions. Familiarity with local clinical governance, incident reporting, waiting-list management or patient-flow measures is useful because course cases use these contexts. Participants should be comfortable reading simple Excel tables and Gantt charts. Formal project management certification, advanced statistical analysis, Microsoft Project expertise and clinical registration are not required. Those new to project management should first gain basic planning and terminology before attending.
Training methodology
The course uses short instructor-led sessions to introduce healthcare project methods, followed by applied workshops using a clinical service redesign case. Participants analyse a baseline patient pathway, build a work breakdown structure and schedule, assess capacity constraints, and maintain a live RAID log as new case information emerges. Small groups conduct a governance review and implementation-readiness checkpoint, testing their plans against clinical safety, workforce and operational scenarios. The final session includes individual application planning, allowing participants to adapt the course templates to a live project in their service.
